The Making of the Phil X Franken G, Part one

2 жыл бұрынThe shock of EVH passing away October 6, 2020 was devastating to every fan in the Van Halen community. Phil X, lead guitar player for Bon Jovi and his own band The Drills wanted to pay tribute to "The King" in his own way- something more than just walking into any guitar shop and grabbing a Frankenstrat replica off the rack. Phil conceived the idea of combining a Gibson SG (Phil's guitar of choice) with Eddie Van Halen's legendary red, black and white Frankenstein. Since he is endorsed by Gibson, the custom shop supplied the blank SG that would become this one-off monster. Phil, my good friend Scott Bawden (Fugly hot rod guitar shop) and myself put our heads together working out every last detail before any physical work was done. In this video (Part one) I make the custom templates and hand route the body for the pickups, volume pot and Fender style output jack. Even though we had to make several compromises and adjustments to suit the SG body, the pickup route turned out more accurate than most "Frankenstrat" replicas out there.

I thought I’d either hate this or not find it interesting at all….boy was I wrong lol. This is so much fun it makes me want to plan a non Strat Frankie, having little or no skills I’ll just dream for now but suffice to say Great job this is way Kool❣️🔥🤘

The level of detail in this build is insane. I love the inclusion of the text messages between the 3 of you - and noting how the excitement builds as you progress. Can't wait to see part 2.

Awesome John ! You are a master at your craft! I wanted to ask a question ! John have you ever thought about recreating Eddie’s Ibanez destroyer when he painted it white and all the specs he had ! ANY Frankie homage guitar without a Floyd Rose tremolo is heresy.

The thing is it's a "tribute" not meant to be an exact replica. Phil isn't a Floyd guy and if you've heard him play you would know that he sure doesn't need one. Putting a Floyd in an SG would also be a little awkward do to the thin body. But with that said, if you did put a Floyd on it then you might as well put a Fender headstock and a maple fretboard on it as well, oh what the heck swap out the SG body for a Strat...
