Go behind the scenes with LTA and discover how our TEL trains are assembled with components from all over the world such as Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan and Shanghai.
The first three stations on the Thomson-East Coast MRT station will open in January 2020.

Why do the trains for every line need to be different? Different size, gauge and manufacturer.

Remus Tay it allows the trains to be as new and technologically advanced as possible. However I Believe that most trains on the network are of the same gauge and size (apart from the upcoming JRL)

Yes, train sizes and gauge are usually the same apart from JRL Theres a different number of cars for each line probably because the line and trains' capacity has to match the expected ridership in some way

Eventually the Thomson East Coast line will connect to Tanah Merah as part of the airport extension, so it will be above ground for one of the sections of track

The Mandai depot is (or at least the tracks leading to are) above ground, and the trains will be washed in the depot - even if they never went above ground (a great example of this is the Circle line, where the trains never go above ground and the depot is underground, but the trains get washed). Additionally, the TEL will eventually replace the Changi Airport branch of the East-West Line, which goes above ground.

The trains on the NSEWLs are of different generations by different companies and of different iterations. You have 6 different types of trains on the NSEWL that made up of apprx 198 fleet. The majority of which are abt 66 original C151 from Kawasaki. They are the very first trains that ran on the line when first opened. The C651 are the 2nd gen of trains by simens Kawasaki also built the C751b partnered with nippon sharyo another japanese company. Followed up model is the C151A by Kawasali but this time, they did it with CSR Qingdao Sifang. That model was the one that was sent back for repairs under warranty following the discovery of hairline cracks. The followed up models c151b and C151c(the newest with LTA logo) are by Kawasaki and CSR Qingdao sifang as well. Kawasaki has been supplying 4 different train models along with their partners for years. The Thomson line Ct251 is by Kawasaki and CRRC Qingdao Sifang as well
