A static review of the BMW R1200GS and the amazing story of how BMW came to enter the market in 1980, creating a new genre . It also explains the key purposes of the monolever , paralever and telelever technical solutions as well as the specifications and characteristics of the 2006 bike featured . Finally I cover my personal views on the bike ,which I have owned since new..

Hello Michael. Like you, I am a silly old man who bought a new gs in 2007 and who still owns it. I have owned many bikes and the gs is the only one I ever bought new. It is now the only bike in my shed and I still cherish it and ride it regularly. It came with the next generation of ABS and the brakes on mine are absolute gems to operate. Clearly, I am a GS fan... I have had two 1100's, two 1150GSA's, 1200,1200GSA, and a 1200GSA Water-cooled... I have put at least 30k miles on each, from commuting, camping and canyon carving. Personally, I dislike the newer W/C versions- I sold my 2016GSA and I am now looking for a low mile 1150 GSA. I love the air/oil cooled torquey bikes with the "agricultural-like" trans! Greatest motorcycle ever produced.

Very interesting and not so short video, I must sit alone when I’m trying to watch your videos as “she who cracks the whip” keeps interrupting my viewing, it’s taken me over an hour to watch. Hi Michael, only just noticed/watched your video, and enjoyed watching. I’m just making this comment to say I too own the same colour GS 07 - which BMW did make a few changes / clock digits etc. I bought new and still own it and only 18.000 miles to which is in similar condition to yours as it’s been dry weather use only, garaged all winters and only getting any water from the odd puddle say on welsh roads in summer that might cross from a stream etc. The fuel sender - I’ve had 2 replaced but each time gets dearer, so now, like yourself I fill up and zero the trip. I’m loathed to sell it as had nearly 17 years and no real tech to go wrong. In 2021 I did go for a ex BMW directors 40th Anniversary Edition with low mileage and as new with virtually every option fitted by the manufacturer, and because registered but as new was a fair bit less than new new if you know what I mean. Unfortunately the first few months of having it, I used my old one for the rest of the summer so never got on the newer one, then I moved so had to put them both in storage for a while over winter. Then the following year my left knee collapsed and infected then had to have a knee replacement so that was in the march and so ruined most of the following summer. I did manage to get back on the newer one for a ride later last summer as taken a while to get the bend in the leg, but I’m okay now, and so looking forward to spring. Anyway apologies a lengthy message, and looking forward to riding again soon- ride safe 🏍️ - Pete

Hi Michael, okay excellent, I’m gathering that you also kept the 06 one or did you end up trading it in for the 1250 ?. Must admit, I’m not sure what it is that tells me that but I could always check with the supplying dealer. Anyway, look forward to your reply. Looking forward to spring like you. Enjoy 😉 Regards Pete

@@PeterLewis-op5gk yes . The options on my bike were wheels , heated grips, ABS and white indicator lens . I kept the two for a while but we were using the 1250 (7000 miles now) so decided to let the 1200 go . I have a few bikes but tend to keep those that I ride rather than collect .. 👍

I have the exact same bike, same colours, but a 2004 model. At the time, my previous bike was a write off and I needed a new one urgently because I use it for my commute. I stumbled upon this one at the dealership. Although not ugly, I don't particularly like the looks of it, but when I sat on it, I had to have it. I bought it even without having done a test ride. I am 1m92 and I never had a bike fit me this well. For comparison, I am flat footed with the seat in the highest position and the bike on its center stand. It brakes very well, but I don't like the noise the ABS pump makes. And worse, when the bike has been out for hours in the soaking rain; sometimes the brake servo fails and it requires a lot of muscle to stop the bike. Riding a couple of km's to allow the heat of the engine to dry some of the components and then restarting the bike, almost always fixes the problem. I think the fuel level indication problem is typical for BMW's of that era. I've also had it on my previous bike (a 2006 F800ST) and as with this bike, it was always fixed by filling the tank with 98 a couple times. I think it doesn't like the ethanol in the 95 E10. Afterwards I run it on 95 again and it's fine. Oh, and it eats rear brake pads. Every service, I've had new ones fitted and at 80 0000 km I had the rear brake disc replaced. The paint on the engine got chipped from riding in the winter and I did have to replace a lightbulb (which the bike let me know with a very stern "lampf!" error). I am not garage queening it, and when repairs are getting to expensive, the bike will be replaced, but thus far it never failed me and always fires right on, even at minus 10 degrees. I once spoke a gentleman from the bmw club, and he told me this bike had to be ridden weekly to keep it in best condition. Especially the servo pump. Apparently they have a tendency to fail when they're not shown enough love.

Great vid much appreciated as I have recently bought the same bike same colour etc etc "LOVE IT TO BITS" Did not think I would but I do. My question is this I am also a 29/30 ish inside leg andcan handle the bike due to how well balanced it is and with the low slung engine its easier that the Triumph I had previously but I have been told you can buy lowered suspension units have you any experience or knowledge in this area I do not want to mess with the seat because that inevetably effects the leg position ?? I am wondering with lower springs if this would have any impact on the handling etc ? My bike is a 2005 with 30K on the clock full service history "which sadly in my mind means nothing" As I would not trust any dealer to do the job as it should be done ?? In very very good condition bought for under 4K so there are now some super deals and a lot of bike for very little money. Last but not least I do think long way up or down and side ways played a massive part in increasing the G.S. range salesthanks again Allan.

Sorry for the delay in responding Allan . I too have been told that you can lower the suspension but other than the BMW low chassis model , I haven’t actually seen one fitted . Must be a common issue otherwise why make a low chassis option ? I struggle with the seat height when 2 up . We have actually bought a lower, sports tourer this year and have enjoyed it . I can ride the GS solo by moving around on the seat at junctions . If you do anything please let us all know . Be good to hear if they work well . You can soften up the Telelever and the Rear Suspension and bring it down some. I set my Telelever to about the Middle setting and the Rear a lot softer, and it feels like it lowered it at least a Inch or Two. It’s fine for one up without a whole lot in the Bags. Hope that helps. I went from Tip Toeing to flat Footed.

Hi, I don,t know how many miles you have done. Mine is 11/2006 with 46k KM (not miles!!!), so low mileage.I bought it in 2012. BMW dealer always maintained. It has been the most unreliable bike ever. Corosion On front engine casing and tank cap, front shock leak, several recall ( abs pipe, rear wheel flnge, fuel sender, ignition/alarm switch...). I am on my third fuel pump (leaks) which is showing signs of failing, one ECU (£1000), and several TPS sensors. The usual real transmission bearing was done by the previos owner around 36k KMs. I had a oil leak between engine and gearbox and that meant spliting the bike in two to replace the balance shaft seal. I had all other accessible seals replaced at the same time, crankshaft, gear box etc. I like riding the bike (btw I fitted low shocks and friend cut the main stand by 40mm, I am 5.6) but RELIABLE is NOT a word I woul use!!!! Cheers.

And the Paris to Dakar riders and world travellers 👍 There was much more to say but I felt it was long enough .

Very true but it has to be said KTM dropped the ball there despite their unimpeachable Paris Dakar record.

Very well presented video of a iconic bike. I've actually got the same model and year as your one. I've always been a big fan of Japanese machines, and trained as a motorcycle mechanic. I wanted to know what all the fuss was about on r1200gs. So I bought one to commute and do a bit of touring on. I agree with you on how well it handles forsuch a lard arse of bike. I found I was pushing it like a sports bike, and it handled it well with the pegs touching down in the corners. It does have its issues though. I've had the fuel gauge problem, the servo on the brakes failed, which is very scary, as you loose 80% of your braking efficiency. Awful design. Delicate canbus electrical system. However I really love this bike, and I will never sell it. Very comfortable and easy to ride with resl road presence.

I was very pleased with mine . A bit tall for me , two up so have recently changed it for a low chassis R1250 which we did the NC500 on earlier this year . Looking forward to trying the new 1300 as well . 👍
