Cass had an unrequited crush on Denny the lead singer. He just didn't share the same feelings. It broke her heart.

60's guys! EVERYONE was a singer or in a band. There were no phones,internet and the telly was crap,so we all soaked up great music and passed it on,we were always out. Parties galore and good times aplenty. Damn,but i miss those wonderful days.

John Phillips was in a group called The Journeymen and his marriage was breaking up when he met Michelle who was almost a decade younger than him. They became involved and once he was divorced they married and decided to form a group themselves. They met Denny Doherty in one of the many clubs in Greenwich Village where he was performing and asked him to join them. He was friends with Cass Elliot, she had been a member of his former group The Mugwamps, and advocated for them to recruit her into the group though John Phillips wasn't sure if she would fit at first. Obviously he eventually came around. Other songs from them-Dedicated to the One I Love and I Saw Her Again are very good. Eventually Cass went out on her own, Make Your Own Kind of Music was her biggest hit. She also did a wonderful duet with John Denver-Leaving on a Jet Plane.

You might want to check out a documentary called Laurel Canyon about how in the 60's everyone back in the day would congregate at Joni Mitchells house and where Cass Elliot introduced many artists to each other and they formed groups. here it goes......the tall guy and the pretty girl were married. The younger guy brought the big girl into the band. She had an amazing voice. The big girl, was in love with the younger guy. But the younger guy, had a fling with the pretty married girl ( she was loved by all men) and that basically ended the group. They all were famous... but the big girl, went on to get her own TV show. Skinny girl on the left was literally a teenage runaway to join the group, not long before this recording, if I recall correctly.

Cass had a solo career after the group broke up, but tragically died very young. The group only lasted two years but had a bunch of hits in that time. Michelle Phillips is the only one left. Michelle and John were married, Cass and Denny were not. Cass had feelings for Denny, but he didn't reciprocate.
