Great Big Story

Great Big Story

7 жыл бұрын

Since its inception in 1986, the Barkley Marathons has had only 14 finishers. Set in the mountains of Tennessee, this 100-mile footrace covers about 66 thousand feet of climb over grueling terrain and must be completed within 60 hours. It's designed for failure. So who thought it up, and why? We had to find out.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

The Fitness Gram Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pager test will begin momentarily, line up at the start. The running test starts off slowly but gets more difficult when you here this sound, a single lap is then completed when you hear this sound.

I’m reading a book right now, written by someone who’s brother participated in the Barkley Marathon, and it’s actually not all that uncommon for runners to experience hallucinations from sleep deprivation and pain. One runner in particular actually straight up forgot they were in a race and wandered around the woods.

I’ve actually watched a documentary on one of his races being done from start to finish. It is brutal and unrelenting. The most crucial thing is their footwear. Because they cross many streams the challenge is to keep your feet dry. God help those that wear new shoes. The layering of socks is an art form. Even with all cautions, it is the feet that can make or break finishing in so many contestants.
@0v_x0
@0v_x0 4 жыл бұрын
blisters and brambles. those saw briar are no joke. that'd be my main strategy besides nutrition. some ppl end up with basically the entire bottom of their foot as a blister, the skin all white, from water and wear the epidermis detaches. gotta hurt like all getout. if I tried this I'd probably spend 6 months callousing my feet like a kung fu trainee strengthening their bones. I'm no athlete though, chronic skeletal muscular injury. but that almost makes me want to try more, just to see how far. maybe if it's still there in 5 years...
@prismatic3695
@prismatic3695 3 жыл бұрын
Keeping your feet dry is easy. There's plenty of socks out there that are waterproof. However, whether these socks alone are comfortable enough the allow you to do the grueling race is another story. Maybe layer another sock inside? idk.

He doesn't care if you finish, win or tap out. He's happy when he can tell that you challenged yourself and achieved beyond what you thought you could. He's doing this to show you that your stronger than you think, all the time, and he wants you to carry that strength with you in everything you set out to do. It's not a competition between competitors, it's a competition with yourself. If more people finished, there could only be 1 winner. But his way, everybody can win.

Obviously Goggins has incredible, remarkable mental strength. However, this is a timed, physically exhausting ultra race. It takes more than physical athleticism and mental fortitude to complete this race. I doubt he has the distance background to complete a Barkley. I imagine it takes a combination of unbelievable acuity and focus in addition to years of development for both slow twitch muscles and the cardiovascular system.

canica99 Tarahumaras live their entire lives barefoot, living in the mountains in the north parts of Mexico. They live through extreme weather changes, climb the highest mountains, travel with their cattle and do other stuff barefoot if they need to. They usually wear sandals, but if the sandals just go to waste, then it means you go barefoot until you get any leather. They wear sandals in the mountains even if it’s snowing... SANDALS. And they wear them if they want to. Hell, I know some Tarahumaras and they tel, you they can’t feel anything from their feet, they just don’t get tired. Fun fact: They don’t call themselves “Tarahumara”, they are “Raramuri” which means “Of Light feet” in their native language. It’s a pretty interesting indigenous group from Mexico, really amazing too.
