David Milarch is the co-founder of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive and a pioneer in the cloning of ancient trees. He has dedicated his life to replanting the genetics of the world's ancient forests. He has led efforts to propogate more than 90 species including the world's oldest redwoods. David's work is featured in the newly released book The Man Who Planted Trees by Jim Robbins.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, Where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

If we are leaving comments, but not actively planting trees, we are just as much to blame as the people cutting down the forests. The natives participated in wildlife conservation naturally. When they would harvest their crop, they would also be sure to propagate for future generations. Lots of lessons we could learn from our ancestors.

As an arborist, I must admit that the industry is changing. The new breed in the industry has a different mindset than most of the older guys. Encourage your children to study forestry- there is VERY good money in it too and very little competition.

Trees are cut down because we satisfy our want rather to meet our need. There is a popular Chinese proverb that say: "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

just a small contention I have with his talk....the vast majority of Lake Superior is NOT a 'dead zone'. These dead zones have started appearing in the western basin but according to the USGS in a recent study, the Lakes are still largely unaffected by them.

What is the difference between using seeds of the 3000 year old tree and cloning?
@mtsenskmtsensk5113
@mtsenskmtsensk5113 4 жыл бұрын
BigWorldBigPoppa Genetic diversity, if you clone you make a copy of a tree. If you plant a seed it is a new tree with different DNA.
@tomaskozler4856

cloning gives 100% chance the clone will be exactly the same. using seeds gives you 0% chance the offspring will be exactly the same - in exactly the same way as when humans make children the good old school way - using seeds. when you buy an apple of some very popular sort (cultivar), you are buying an apple from one of millions apple trees of this exact cultivar that are growing and fruiting every year. all those millions of apple trees are identical clones and they all descend from one single specimen that is most likely long time dead but they keep cloning it on and on. because, that exceptional specimen may had produced seedlings as well but they all came out different from each other and technically each of them were their own unique cultivars but most of them weren´t attractive enough to get cloned and hence to get to become cultivars in fact.

Much of the old growth trees not cut down in recent times were destroyed by forest firers. This should never have happened and we must make sure it never happens again. Individuals convicted of deliberately setting forest firers should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the years.

Boring yes deceiving yes also....Lake superior is not a 95% dead lake as a matter of fact according to the university of Minnesota the lakes fisheries are vastly improved over the last 40 years...Of course fish are not found in the deep areas of the lake as most fish in lakes are where the food is and that place is closer to shore. Hence the very deep waters of the center of the lake are sparse.. The water however is fine...Also picking out record temperatures in certain times and particular areas of the world is not an accurate way of measuring "world" climate as the last 3 years after this talk would show...I wonder if he uses the last 3 cold winters and the record lows during that period in his present day speeches. I think not. The man is after grants and preaching doom and gloom is obviously the way to do it...His cause is admirable, I must admit, more power to people who plant trees. Just don't lie to get peoples attention, when they find out they were lied to they will turn on you...Yes it's getting warmer it was warmer in the past ie. Greenland when Leaf Ericson landed there there were palm trees growing there... Please people when you hear a talk by these morons please check the facts, and not in one place but several. Form your own opinions on the facts you find for yourself.

Good on you for at least watching a ted talk. But if because something isn't interesting to us and we miss out on the important message/truth in that presentation that could affect our lives or the future don't you think that's silly.. If you're serious about learning and contributing positively to society/the environment then you're always trying to learn from everywhere! Regardless of how good/bad the circumstances/situation.. Can you imagine If humans die out because we couldn't pay attention and wanted everything to be interesting/fun/easy instead of seeing the truth/message in it and acting on this? Don't you think that's silly and that we deserve to die out if that's the case..?
