Hey, hidey ho there, how ya doin, welcome to part three of this here Han dynasty trilogy. If you haven’t seen the first two I highly recommend it, if not don’t worry about it, all you need to know: This guy is Han Wudi, he ruled China for 5 decades at the peak of one of its golden ages, made it bigger and better, then got super paranoid and killed his favorite son. Along the way he threw his newborn great-grandson into prison but guess what he grew up in prison, a kindly warden got him out, he grew up some more as a commoner and then someone came to his house one day and said “Hey surprise congratulations you’re the emperor!” and he was a really nice guy who did nice things for the commoners and only mass-murdered like one family, practically a saint.
Today, and by today I mean like 1 BCE, the emperor is dead, succession is getting complicated again and China is effectively ruled by this man: the quiet and humble regent Wang Mang… who’s leading a cult of personality from the shadows in order to resurrect a 1000-year-old kingdom and become the most powerful man in the known world.
Music (in order of appearance):

There kinda was. There were several trade relations between the two and they even set up embassies (China in 27 BC and Rome in 166 AD). @@reillycurran8508 No, I'd say that Roman imperialism is a lot lighter than Chinese imperialism (what was that line about the Mongols? laissez-faire tyranny?). The thing is that China didn't know about the world at large... At the time. Now, they do. From what I can see, Roman emperors weren't nearly as obsessed about wiping out all traces of the dynasty that preceded them as Chinese emperors did.

Funny story about Wang Mang. According to the Book of Jin, Wang Mang was actually bald, which led to him being kind of insecure and developing a fully head-covering hat as part of the official dress for government officials, called a "Jieze"(介帻)-hat. It basically looked liked a like a pillbox hat, which you could add elements on top of to denominate status (such as a square arch-shaped "crown" to form a civil official/scholar's hat called a Jinxianguan 进贤冠, the descendant of which was still used until Ming Dynasty) This was one reform that actually stuck and indirectly led to the development of many of the fancy hats of Chinese history, such as the hat you see Zhuge Liang wearing in Three Kingdoms history.

That paper prayer thing actually has a precedent. He is copying the golden coffer (金滕) incident of Duke of Zhou. After conquering Shang, King Wu of Zhou became seriously ill. His brother, Duke of Zhou, wrote a prayer, claimed that he is willing to sacrifice himself if the heaven and the ancestors of Zhou are determined to take someone away. This prayer was then locked up in a golden coffer. After the death of King Wu, DoZ became the regent of Wu’s son, King Cheng of Zhou. Three other brothers of Wu accused DoZ planning to usurp the throne, and started a rebellion. DoZ went east for 2-3 yrs to suppress the rebellion. King Cheng later also doubted the loyalty of DoZ, but dismissed his suspicion after finding what is inside the golden coffer, and gave the duke a warm welcome. DoZ genuinely returned the power to King Cheng after he grew up, his regency lasted for 7 years. What Wang Mang did is a farce comparing to the first time.

I started making a list of the emperors of every Chinese dynasty a few weeks ago and while going over the history I came across the whole story of Wang Mang. I went into further details about him because I had to write reasons why the Han dynasty stopped and came back. I was doing separate documents for each dynasty and I wasn't wasting a whole document on a dynasty that had only 1 emperor. Since the whole process about how Mang became emperor is so complicated I ended up researching deeper than I needed. I swear I'm not just saying this but I thought since Jack had done videos on Chinese history that he might explore that period but the chances of that we so slim. The whole story is perfect for Jack's format. I can't believe he actually did it not long after. Thanks Jack.

No doubt there were some landowners who werent appropriately using their lands and thats what pushed the idea of the sloth tax, but it was just poorly implemented bcuz literally everything he did as emperor was poorly implemented. There's a very cute story about Emperor Ai of Han (the gay emperor in the video) and his boyfriend Dong Xian. One afternoon while Emperor Ai and Dong Xian are taking a nap in bed together, Emperor Ai has to get up to attend to some duties, but Dong Xian is laying on Emperor Ai's sleeve. Rather than wake him up and move him off the sleeve, Emperor Ai decides to cut off the sleeve Dong Xian is sleeping on and go about his duties with only one sleeve. Many courtiers were so moved that there was a trend of court officials having cut sleeves in admiration during his reign.

He actually did. The water clock used by the Han was divided into 100 boxes, he changed it to 120. He also ordered that people should change the order of the sexagenary cycle, using Wuzi(戊子, the 25th) as the first day of the cycle instead of Jiazi(甲子). He also planned to change the era name every 6 years to improve the luck of the country. As you might have guessed, people simply ignored or jeered at his bullshit.

Wang Mang was a blood relative of Jin 金 Clan, who were descendants of Xiongnu Prince Jin Midi 金日磾. When Wang Mang's Xin Dynasty collapesed, Jin Clan had to run for their lives. and many of Jin Clan crossed the Yellow Sea and Settled in Southern coast of Korean Peninsula. These 金 Kim Clans established Gaya Kingdom and Shilla Kingdom in 1st Century AD. When Shilla Kingdom fell in 936 AD, one of Prince of Shilla escape to Manchuria, and became ruler of Jurchens, and his descendants Established Jin 金 Dyansty. Also Qing Dynasty was successor to Jin Dynasty. When Qing Dynasty collapsed in 20th Century, many of the Imperial family assumed the last name of Jin 金. And obviously they are remotely related to North Korean 金 Kim clan. also, some scholars suggested that Wang clan also crossed the Yellow Sea and settled around Kaesŏng (city south of Pyongyang), and their descedant Wang Geon established Kingdom of Goryeo (Korea) in 918 AD.

What is the source of all that? Silla was first found by the Park family. One day, one of the king found a boy under a tree when the rooster sounded. He was very pleased, not only adopted the boy but granted him the surname Kim and even renamed his country to Ji Lin. The descendants of the boy eventually took over the throne when the later Park kings were weaked, and renamed the kingdom as Silla. I don't think there was any relation possible to Wang Mang.

Why do I feel like 00:48 is going to be the basis of the next World of Warcraft expansion >.< really though this reminds me a little bit of Simon de Montfort. Wang Mang was a very advanced reformer, but he lost to the times because his reform was not scientific in the feudal social environment at that time. First, he nationalized farmers' land, prohibited private sales, and was uniformly managed and distributed by the central government. Second, reform the tax system, change all wine, salt and iron into government operation, send tax officials to supervise prices in the market, restrict businessmen from hoarding goods and raise prices. Third, after Wang Mang came to power, he issued new money, mastered the power of making money, weakened the power of the old ethnic groups in the Han Dynasty, and prevented them from plundering the wealth of the people. Fourth, implement forced labor. The government formulates punishment measures for all unemployed vagrants, and each person pays one piece of cloth and silk every year. If they are unable to pay, the government forces them to perform labor service and provides food during labor service. Fifth, establish a loan system. People can borrow money from the government for funeral or sacrifice needs. They only need to repay the principal without interest. If you borrow money from the government for agricultural and commercial production, the government will charge one tenth of the net profit as interest.

Han Feizi clearly stated that, reforms must be implemented gradually. No matter how great the reform maybe, if it is implemented to quickly, it is worse than not doing the reform at all. And he predates Wang Mang by hundreds of years.

That and command economies are woefully insufficient. There is a reason why all Communist and Socialist states revert back to some governmental control of capitalism or have outrageously massive underground black markets where people could actually acquire their wants and needs.
