Fun fact: Before Dunkirk, he also did scouting missions with his wife across the English Channel disguised as an normal civilian boat. In one of those scouting missions, an german patrol boat decided to check on them. Before it was too late, Lightoller grabbed an shot cup and an bottle on the lower decks and pretended to be drunk. This actually fooled the germans and they continued on to be very helpful on the fight against the Nazi regiment. If Yarnhub ever notices this, I recommend doing an part 2, because this was an very important part of his life.

Sylvia Lightoller is a legend in her own right. She was a petite Australian beauty (her wedding photo is on the Internet) and horsewoman. Charles adored her and his five children. They encouraged their two daughters to be brave and independent, and quietly bore the loss of two of their three boys in WWII. Charles taught Sylvia to sail, and she was a star pupil. What a family.

I happen to be a relative of Sylvia Lightoller, his wife. I met the old girl when I was 10 & 12y and she was nearly 90. Tough as nails. She had a club foot. She liked her whiskey, much to the horror of her Methodist relatives and she also loved Creme de Menthe. And of course the character in Dunkirk is based on him. They also did a little spying together on the emerging German Navy in the 1930s. My father compared notes with her on Dunkirk vs his experience of Greece and Crete.

@sirgothnerd, He wasn't a jerk in that movie. Although the real Lightoller was strong but quiet, director James Cameron wanted a more colorful Lightoller. An "American-style" take-charge-loudly sort of guy. "Mr. Hollywood" Cameron was stupid in that presentation, as he was in making people believe Murdoch was a suicide. And Cameron cut the footage of Lightoller rescuing 30 men by instructing them how to stand on the keel of that overturned lifeboat. Nor were we shown that the honorable Lightoller was the last man to board the Carpathia. After all, he was by then the senior officer.

Unfortunately, in the early days of modern naval warfare a lot of the old hands had a strong bias against submariners, and for a surprisingly long time submariners were treated as pirates who deserved to be shot Here is an excerpt from the excellent book Hunter Killers, by Ian Ballantyne ‘They’ll never be any use in war and I’ll tell you why: I’m going to get the First Lord to announce that we intend to treat all submarines as pirate vessels in wartime and that we’ll hang all the crews.’ Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson, Controller of the Royal Navy, 1901

Lightoller reminds me of nurse Violet Jessop, a woman who was on board and survived the Olympic , Titanic, and their sister ship Britannic's disastrous wrecks. The first ship, Olympic, collided with another boat and needed to have repairs, sending Jessop to board the Titanic months later. After Titanic's deadly demise, Britannic was to be the next largest cruise ship, turned into a hospital ship when WWI started, thus making it a target for the enemies. Britannic hit a German mine and sunk just as Titanic did, but quicker, and Violet barely escaped the horrific wreck. Thankfully there were less casualties because the ship carried more lifeboats, only 30 people died, mostly because they didn't listen to authorities and landed their lifeboats too close to the propellers at the end of the ship. Violet was hit by part of the ship's propeller but managed to survive. She's been dubbed "Miss Unsinkable," living till the age of 84.

He didn’t enforce the “women and children first” protocol. Officer Murdoch did and allowed men to board when all available women and children in the general vicinity were no longer available. Officer Lightoller on the other hand interpreted the order as “women and children only” and denied nearly all men who attempted to board. Titanic’s lifeboats nearly had 400 empty seats. Murdoch has loaded nearly 100 more passengers on his side than Lightoller.

@zain mudassir Only Titanic's first three smokestacks were real. The fourth was fake, and was there for show, but also provided ventilation.

The Stuka (a.k.a the Junkers Ju 87) was one of the deadliest and powerful German dive bombers during ww2. If it weren’t for Herbert and his advice to his father, The Sundowner would’ve surely been sunk along with all the other men on the ship.

Just in case you didn't notice: one of the chimneys of the ship is never seen working: this is because it wasn't used during the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Amazing attention to details as always!

One omission here on the TITANIC part: He actually got sucked under against ventilators TWICE. This was the first time you described. The second time, he got sucked back down (don't know if it was the same ventilator), and he never knew how he got away from that one, and at this point he had resolved that he was dead. After getting away from the second one was when he found Collapsible B and the rope.
