Ether was used as one of the first successful general anesthetics in a surgery performed to remove a tumour from a patient's neck.

Diethyl ether or petroleum ether, and what is the difference?

diethyl ether has a oxygen atom in the middle of the carbon chain(CH3CH2OCH2CH3). The petroleum ether is a combination of hydrocarbons that have the "same" boiling point of ether( i use this for extractions in the lab).
