Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra) is released from prison with a set of drums and a new outlook on life, and returns to his run-down neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago. A drug addict (the drug is never named, but heroin is strongly implied), Frankie became clean in prison. On the outside, he greets friends and acquaintances. Sparrow (Arnold Stang), who runs a con selling homeless dogs, clings to him like a young brother, but Schwiefka (Robert Strauss), whom Frankie used to deal for in his illegal card game, has more sinister reasons for welcoming him back, as does Louie (Darren McGavin), Machine's former drug dealer.
Frankie returns home to his wife Zosh (Eleanor Parker), who is supposedly wheelchair-bound after a car crash some years earlier that was caused by Frankie driving drunk. Zosh is secretly fully recovered, but pretends to be unable to walk in order to keep making Frankie feel guilty so he will stay with her. Frankie comments on the whistle she wears around her neck, a device she used in Frankie's absence to summon a neighbor, Vi (Doro Merande), when needed. With Frankie home, Zosh smothers her husband in their small tenement apartment and hinders his attempt to make something of himself. He thinks he has what it takes to play drums for a big band. While calling to make an appointment, he bumps into an old flame, Molly (Kim Novak) who works in a local strip joint as a hostess and lives in the apartment below Frankie's. Unlike Zosh, Molly encourages his dream of becoming a drummer.
Frankie soon gets himself a tryout and asks Sparrow to get him a new suit, but the suit is a stolen one and he ends up back in a cell at a local Chicago Police Precinct. Schwiefka offers to pay the bail. Frankie refuses, but soon changes his mind when the sight of a drug addict on the edge becomes too much for him. Now, to repay the debt, he must deal cards for Schwiefka again. Louie is trying to hook him on drugs again, and with no job and Zosh to please, pressure is building from all directions.
Soon Frankie succumbs and is back on drugs and dealing marathon, all-night, card games for Schwiefka. Molly sees he is using drugs again and runs away from him. He gets a tryout as a drummer, but spends 24 hours straight dealing a poker game. Desperately needing a fix, Frankie follows Louie home, attacks him, and ransacks his house, but can't find his drug stash. At the audition, with withdrawal coming on, Frankie can't keep the beat and ruins his chance of landing the drumming job. When Louie goes to see Zosh to try to find Frankie, Louie discovers that Zosh has been faking her paralysis and can walk. Zosh, scared of being found out, pushes Louie over the railing of the stairwell to his death, but things backfire when Frankie is sought for Louie's murder....
---
Directed ans produced by Otto Preminger, screenplay by Walter Newman, Lewis Meltzer and Ben Hecht (uncredited), based on the 1949 novel "The Man with the Golden Arm" by Nelson Algren, starring Frank Sinatra as Frankie "Dealer" Machine, Eleanor Parker as Zosh, Kim Novak as Molly Novotny, Arnold Stang as Sparrow, Darren McGavin as "Nifty Louie" Fomorowski, Robert Strauss as Zero Schwiefka, John Conte as Drunkie John, Doro Merande as Vi, George E. Stone as Sam Markette, George Mathews as Williams, Leonid Kinskey as Dominowski, Emile Meyer as Captain Bednar, Chicago Police Department, Shorty Rogers as himself (bandleader at audition) and Shelly Manne as himself (drummer at audition)

Frank played his role perfectly, and showed a very realistic depiction of life as a Heroin Addict / Struggling Musician. His relapse where he shoots up and his withdrawal scenes where straight, spot on. Being a addict myself I really liked this portrail where you actually see the addict as a person and even care about the character. Unlike most movies that paint all addicts as homeless scumbags. It was refreshing to see him be a semi-functional addict, and very cool that he was able to get clean and get the girl.

@@robyndismon394 not only that, but she took every chance to make him feel guilty. Imagine pulling out a scrapbook that says “my fatal accident” (who died?) and telling the ‘doctor’ that her husband was driving drunk when it happened! Ugh, she drove me nuts! The fact that she was faking it really made me dislike her, and the clinginess and negativity about his future was just too much!

This film really changed things. This was the straw that broke the camel's back regarding film censorship and led to the adoption of the much looser system or censorship that we saw back In the 1960s which in turn paved the way for today's even looser censorship. This film was also one of the firsts to have a genuinely artistic poster and intro, which led others to see posters (and opening animations!) as more than just tools - this was the push that got them to be considered artworks themselves. in short, a very influential film. Thank you for posting.

Regarding censorship in this film; I couldn't help noticing that Kim Novak does not appear to be wearing a bra in any of her scenes....not that I'm complaining, but this seems like a bold move for 1955. I wonder if this was done at the behest of Otto Preminger.....or maybe Ms. Novak simply didn't like wearing a bra. What do you think?

His acting was just as good as his singing. Totally loved this movie n watch it from time to time I also recommend it to all the facilities I've spoken at and for anyone who wants to see a really good movie. My grandparents loved Frank Sinatra n my brother and I have different fathers but he's a Sinatra n somehow there's a relation but I forgot how. Great directing, casting. One of those films that's easy to watch over and over. Opening bar scene he speaks of Lexington KY, the first federal institution to deal with narcotics addiction. Frankie must have been lucky to have been admitted after a gambling bust. When he finally caved in and went for a relapse fix his pupils were dilated, after the hit they went pinned; quite realistic. How it was done is a good question. Setting was good but obviously a stage, not on location. Hat Full of Rain is another good depiction of addiction in that time frame. Thanks for the good quality entertainment!

How it was done was probably a masterful film exposure/lighting job; matching the scenes so they looked the same but lots more light on the pin eyed shot and using the eyes natural closing of the iris/pupils when in lots of light (check your pupils when next at the beach) well that's how I would have done it. Yeah the vertical light when he is pinned, face on light when hes sitting up and wide eyed. In those days tho it could have been an actual hit!

I just recommended her Nor masterpiece Caged (1950) to a friend. She's just phenomenal in that. AS far as showing Eleanor's how beautiful she was, hafta go with Scaramouche, which is kind of a silly adventurer based on the French story co-starring Tyrone Powers. Sure it's a silly movie but she's just insanely breathtaking in that. Seeing Eleanor in glorious technicolor is a sight to behold.

Sinatra is a genius as he subtly crafts his acting role as a small time hustler and hopeless junk addict with much realism and emotional depth. Caught right between his needy & hussy wife and gorgeously beautiful caring stunning mistress ( Kim Nokav ) -- he is indeed troubled man with a bad monkey on his back ! And it aint easy to change mid - stream and be a straight arrow decent citizen with a good job and sound morals when you straight out of the rotten joint. Beautifully short in B & W ~ its a cautionary morality tale; a telling drama and a warning to all dabblers. Will he finally see reality; shape up and fly right this time around ....or simply relapse decending into depravity & utter despair of a dope fiend .... losing it all once again ? You have to watch it to see outcomes !

Strangely, when you look at today's world there is a high-percentage of addicts that this film focuses on era 2000's. Prior, the production CEO"s wanted to ban this film with no success. What did it? Are these people overlooking the troubles tar can do? This, drug is the worst of all evils, it may be a lure to catch the lowest of the low or the highest of the high. However, taken by the looks of this actor which doesn't look like very much, we can all put our heads together and stare reality in the face. The war on drugs is limited these days, it takes more thievery, criminal intent to finally give it a reality check.

Eleanor Parker is even more attractive than Kim Novak in this movie ! That, my friends, is really saying something !

It being shot on a set kinda sucked and this was very obviously a set. It would have had a more authentic feel if it was actually in the city. Felt more like a play with how everything was on the same street, especially when he relapsed and just had to walk across the street for his fix. Besides that, it was better than I expected., Sinatra can act. Novak is always sexy without even trying. Pretty good flick. I felt invested.

Wow! Great movie. Endings not really believable. Cops are sure it's her, without a word, let him walk based on that? _ahh naw_ They'd bring him in for a statement, at least. But Great. Never cared for his music. Finding out he's a good actor, though.
