The great purge likely refers to when the Empire took over Mandalore, testing new weapons on its population and wiping most of them out. Star Wars Rebels covers it pretty well, and Clone Wars covers what they were like before the Empire. Also I'm pretty sure Jon Favreau himself voices the big mean Mando.

Y’all do understand that obi wan praised their accuracy to Luke, right? Do none of you consider that the force assured they survived, knowing their survival was the only way Luke would convince Vader to fulfill his destiny? I think some of you fans completely forget that the force is conscious. It’s not some tool that you pull out of the toolbox whenever you want, it’s living and fluid. It desires balance, and moves the pieces around to make that happen, and it sure as fuck isn’t going to let stormtroopers who are known for their accuracy stop it from achieving its balance. Oh yeah, in case you also forgot, every time we see stormtroopers in action against those not protected by the force, they fucking absolutely slaughter with no problems.

I'm rewatching it again, and I noticed something very clever. In the fight in the forge with the Heavy Mando, the reason the Mandalorian responds so violently isn't just because of his conflicted feelings on the job or because he's being harassed. Take a look at where the Heavy Mando actually grabs him - he's grabbing the underside of the helmet. He was trying to prove that the Mandalorian wasn't worthy of the clan by removing his helmet in front of everyone. If the Mandalorian didn't respond with violence he would have lost the helmet and proved the Heavy's point. It's a blink and miss it moment, but dang if that isn't some effective world-building.

One thing I loved about this episode were the knives the mandalorians were using. If you look closely, you'll notice a blurring effect on the blades, which means they're vibroblades. “I’m really not sure how they’re doing it, but they’re doing it” I’ll tell you how they’re doing it...they put competent people who actually love Star Wars in charge. Filoni was George’s right hand man for many years before selling to Disney. He’s the closest thing to George Lucas that we’ll get...and only George, or someone who learned everything from George, could make you emotionally connect to someone who you can’t even physically see emotions from.

Quotenwagnerianer you do realize it’s Jon and Dave’s show, and they probably sat down and mapped all this out before even filming? See, I can do that too lmao writing comes before everything bro. Writing happened like a year ago. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jon and I’m happy with what he’s done so far too, but him being the “writer” of this episode means he was given creative control over how things play out in this particular episode in correspondence with the bigger picture they’ve already written. They both together probably know how the entire show is going to play out already, but best believe most of it came from the mind of George 2.0 long before they started filming. Idk if guys like you think they write each episode “as they go”, but there’s not enough time in the world for that. It all happened a while ago.

One thing I've always disagreed with is the thought that an audience can't connect with a non-emoting protagonist. Some okay examples to start with are Batman, who has only his eyeballs and mouth (no cheeks or eyebrows); Judge Dredd, who only has his mouth. But the best example are cowboy movies that this is similar to. The Mando is the lone gunslinger, Clint Eastwood-type, who never emotes, has the same stoic expression on their face the entire movie. Samurai movies as well, where the samurai is stoic, quiet, and rarely emotes.

I know it's still the beginning, but still to not see a hint of Pascal's face so far I think I can go the whole 8 episodes with no face. The T visor is iconic and to follow the mythosaur shape I feel the helmet and visor has just as stong emotion as the GREAT Darth Vader Helmet. Like Vader's helmet it has had 4 decades to establish itself a concrete symbol of the SW brand.

It keeps getting better every episode! That last scene with all the mandalorians showing up to have Mando's back was epic! That armor upgrade though 🔥🔥🔥! One thing I wonder about the mandalorians, how do they eat if they never take their helmets off? That Stormtrooper in the room where Baby Yoda was impressed me, his shot actually hit what he was aiming at LMAO.

I doubt Dyn is Mandalorian by birth. His parents don't appear to be Mandalorian, and being a "Foundling" he was most likely found by Mandalorians and trained in their ways to bolster their once great but now dwindling numbers.

Timeline wise, I would say that this "Great Purge" would have happened sometime after the Mandalorians united under Bo Katan during the last season of Rebels. Rebels ends a year before A New Hope. So sometime in the original Trilogy Before the Empire fell, as this Mandalorian Show takes place Five years after the Return of the Jedi.

While many believe the purge refers to order 66 I go on the side of the theory that in the end star wars rebels the mandalorians had rebelled against the empire and taken back there planet. So the theory states that the empire destroyed most of the mandalorians as retaliation and tried to purge that race since a race of warriors that didn't obey the empire would be target #2. Target #1 will always be the jedi/ force wielders.

maybe they are trying to extract the midiclorians from the child to replicate them? and maybe use them to make force-sensitive storm troopers or something.
@donaldwatson7698

It makes a certain sense (presuming the new canon is allowing for cloning of force-sensitives), but it also suggest that this Empire remnant has someone capable of training newly-forged force-sensitives in the ways of the force. That would further suggest one or more Inquisitors surviving the fall of the Empire, unless the Knights of Ren were already a thing.
