The Mandalorian is a Starwars based tv series created by Jon Favreau for the streaming service Disney+. It is the first live-action series of the franchise and is set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Pedro Pascal is the main star and take the role of the title character, a lone bounty hunter.
An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

@@natknutson1482 I did do my research, but completely forgot about mentioning the sect even though it was in my notes. I used to memorise all my scripts but now I don't do that anymore, and mostly follow a bullet point list, so sometimes some information slips. I chose to stop memorizing my scripts because it would only allow me 2 or 3 videos a month whereas now I can publish 8 a month constantly, and the videos are also more natural. I think it's better this way, but it does come at a cost of possible slips. On my recent video about my new brigandine I completely forgot to say that the central plates overlap, eventhough it was in my notes and it was an important thing to say. People asked me "but ist't the middle part a weak spot? Coulnd't a blade slip through?" so then I remembered I needed to say and show that, and I showed it on my following video "Brig vs Seg". It just happens. If you made youtube videos you'd know. I of course mean no disrespect

If the various alloy the suit is made out of were diamagnetic or magnetized, it's possible to think that powerful magnet mounted at the soles you constantly apply a strong force opposed to gravity. While walking, the "active" sole switches constantly so that it's only active on the one touching the ground (otherwise it would be useless, taking 15 kilograms off your body and tying them to the bottom of your moving foot).

One thing to also consider is that even if the armor isn't the best fitting/comfortable, people do adapt to things...and that's without the religious angle to them as well. For example, HazMat suits are not that fun to have on, they are not comfortable for long periods of time,...but people can and do go for some exceedingly long periods in them. Things like military NBC stuff can be expected for some situations to be long duration things, and days with a gas mask were common with WW1 trenches. And the Mandalorian Armor is a sealed or at least sealable armor, you might spend weeks in it sealed up if there's issues with your ship, swapping air and filters to keep going. Then there's the religious aspect of it, the Children of the Watch are expected to be wearing it, basically, 24/7 for the majority of their lives, younger kids are exempt, but they'd be wearing it young and keeping it on. I still tend to prefer the Legends Mandalorian cultures a bit more, but they had a similar thing where they were expected to be used to wearing their armor if not always wearing it.

Mandalorian armor is also powered to some extent (shown in several scenes) which is *likely* some form of inertial dampening. On top of making physical attacks and getting tossed around more survivable, this could also make the armor a lot more wearable by canceling out some of its perceived weight.

I will clarify something about beskar, it can withstand a lightsaber but only for a time. It's noted that if applied for a great enough time, the lightsaber will cut through eventually. That of course is for personal armor, but for some, like Freedon Nadd's tomb, which had a blast door made of beskar, a lightsaber was unable to penetrate it.

As for the weight, I remember you having an experiment with a Roman lorica segmentata (I think). You wore the armour for a whole week and you had no problems on doing your everyday works. So, since a Mandalorian is a warrior, he is used to wearing his armour for big periods of time- basically for ever.

When we saw Mando's old armour get trashed by the mudhorn, we saw there was some pretty complex circuitry running around inside it. We've also seen Mando shrug off some impacts that by all rights really should've broken a few bones, like getting thrown around by said mudhorn or falling off the Jawas sandcrawler. So I suspect that that circuitry is part of an inertial damping system that helps prevent injury from impacts. Given the ubiquity of such technology in Star Wars, it could also have some compact repulsorlift parts that reduce the weight of the armour to make it easier to wear.

I'm sure others have commented on this already but... 1. Mandalorians who are "Children of the Watch" don't take their helmets off in front of others. Other Mandalorians are fine with removing their helmets when not in combat. 2. It's shown that Din Jaren removes his helmet when eating, so question answered. 3. While the nodules over the "ears" of the helmet may indeed be shaped to protect electronics underneath, they also serve as external attachment mounts to upgrade the helmet's capabilities, such as telescopic sights. 4. Beskar is resistant to lightsabers, not immune. Sustained contact with a lightsaber (tens of seconds or perhaps even minutes) can heat up and possibly melt beskar. This is shown with the beskar spear glowing red under sustained contact with the darksaber. Also, since the spear disn't seem to lose structural integrity when heated so, it's possible that the temperature at which the beskar loses structural strength is extremely high and that beskar might not be tempered like steel. Perhaps it's closer to bronze in forging methods n that it's work hardened?

Cortosis also resisted lightsabers; pure cortosis could short them out for a while. It was usually used in the form of an alloy to give something the ability to resist lightsabers.

Well, other prominent materials that can resist lightsabers are Phrik and Cortosis - with the latter being less durable, but also being capable of short outing lightsabers when making contact with the blade.

The reasons for the mandalorian armor and weapons being they way they are is primarily to give them the abilities to fight against jedi. The jedi and their abilities, is what drove the mandalorians to update their armour the way they have.
@scottphillips6005

Mandalore (the planet) originally had a lot of very dangerous and hostile creatures - the style of their armor was developed during that time (namely the T shaped visor) back when they used actual swords and spears. The Mandalorian makes a reference to the Mandalorians' past of dealing with creatures in season 1 - they used to tame and ride the creatures, which they then based their Basilisk War Droids on. In other words, at one point in their history, they rode creatures that you could say made them comparable to cavalry. Their armor had a similar but different design back then, but Mandalore (the leader) always had a full T shaped helmet like the (relatively speaking) modern one. The additions to their armor fighting Jedi primarily consisted of their jet packs and gauntlets, which they didn't fully adopt until later on. They used the combination of wrist rockets, jetpack mounted rockets, the little wrist cord they wrap people up with, flame throwers, and the mobility provided by jetpacks to fight Jedi because the Jedi were (with a few rare exceptions) far superior in close combat and against blaster fire. The tactics you see Jango use against Obi-wan and Windu (although his fight with Windu was cut short due to damage to his jetpack) make pretty complete use of the tactics their armor is designed for. They fly around to stay out of range, focus on disarming or binding the Jedi with the whipcord, use explosives to knock them off their feet, and use flame throwers to keep them from focusing enough to use the force. Jango was a bit unique in the fact he could take Jedi like Obi-wan up close though; it's important to remember that when he fought Obi-wan up close, it's a normal human vs what is basically a super human with superior reflexes, some degree of precognition, superior strength, etc. While they do have some melee weaponry on their armor, they're definitely focused on fighting at a range. Only a foolish or particularly strong Mandalorian would attempt to fight a Jedi up close.

Well, I think the later medieval barbutes were inspired in part by those sorts of helmets, so maybe there is a similar sort of historical development in Mandalorian history? I don't know about their lore.
@Yarblocosifilitico
@Yarblocosifilitico 3 жыл бұрын
@@cryingcrane8173 yeah I assume that golden one is the most traditional one since its wearer is the Armorer, who is the leader of the group and knows how to work Beskar. We've also seen a Beskar spear (another fact that makes me think of Spartans rather than medieval italians), so for sure there has been development in their culture. But the newer styles of mando helmets are still more similar to the corinthian helmet than to the one Metatron is showing.

Besides Beskar there was also Cortios, which in it's pure form(though it was extremely brittle) could cause a feedback loop and turn off, disable or even destroy a lightsaber. It was also weaved into armor, weapons, etc to give them resistance to saber cuts. Thus weaved or alloy could withstand multiple hits from a lightsaber before failing. (Though even Beskar will fail if held for a extended period or if enough contacts are made in a short enough time to a saber). Cortios weaved weapons/armor were much more common in the KOTOR/SWTOR era. Also Electrum alloy was another that was resistant to lightsabers, Mace Windu's saber was made of such. Also Orbalisks, if enough of a infection of these...creatures...got into a host would create a lightsaber resistant skin/armor but if not kept in check would kill it's host. Dath Bane had this. Vibro-weapons, especially if also having a plasma or other energy cell or with the before mentioned cortios weave, could resist a few saber blows before failing. Also the Sith, and some others, used the force, namely Sith alchemy, to create swords and other weapons that could resist lightsabers. There was also some animals, especially the Terrentak, who's hide could resist or make them almost immune to a lightsaber. Also among these was the Vong's crab armor.

In the "Legends" material (the books and comics and games pre-Disney buyout- -had two materials that could stop a lightsaber; Beskar and cortosis. Cortosis could not only block lightsaber attacks, but can actually turn the saber off and make it nit able to turn back on for a while. Imperial Knights (Gray Jedi from the era 100 years after the original trilogy-- had vambraces of cortosis as standard issue kit. *edit* edited for typos

To answer the question of Stormtrooper armour, it was made of plastoid, which was like a lower grade material than durasteel. It was also cheaper to manufacture so in my opinion, it could be weaker in durability and protection.

Here is some random starwars armor facts for anyone who wants to read. Stormtrooper armor is made of Duraplast (basically a really strong plastic alloy) and was cheap to produce. It was designed to distribute the energy of a blaster bolt across the plate that it hit, causing realt bad energy burns but not necessarily killing the trooper wearing it outright. Now the second most protective armor armor in Star Wars is Katarn class commando armor. This armor was used primarily by the Clone Republic Commando's of the Galactic Republic durning the clone wars. In addition to its extreme protectiveness many sets of Commando armor had a light personal shield for further protection. Katarn armor in legends even stopped a tank round when it hit the commando wearing it in the chest and left him relatively unharmed, besides some bruised ribs and a concussion. This was at least the lore that I have known for a while but the new cannon might be different from what I described but I hope someone finds this interesting.

There are several other materials that can protect from lightsabers, one prime example being Cortosis, however unlike the Mandalorian Iron, Cortosis is brittle. Where Beskar armour could withstand both blaster and slugthrower fire, Cortosis would perform exceptionally against the former yet shatter in the case of the latter.

A very interesting outlook into a fantasy. I find the approach of viewing it from an in universe and out of universe perspective refreshing. I would however add that as a result of the Disney aquisition there are 2 distinct continuities in which the Mandalorians in particular vary quite strongly. Perhaps a video of a similar nature looking at designs of other periods in the older continuity would be an interesting extension of this video. Although I imagine that looking at concept art, comic book panels and 3d models may be less compelling than the designs of the new live action series. Not to mention that this new series by virtue of its recent release draws more viewers. Either way keep uo the great work.

I love how Shad is so cheeky by saying he's the foremost expert hahaha. Stormtrooper armour was made of plastoid, a sort of really hard plastic that in conjunction with the body suit of the trooper would stop bullets and absorb blaster fire energy and dissipate it enough to protect against glancing shots or distribute the shot's energy enough to increase the chances of survival for direct or powerful hits. Given that the empire had millions of soldiers this sounds like an economical and sufficient way to protect your soldiers. Fun fact, in the old canon, the Expanded Universe/ Legends, Boba Fett didn't use Mandalorian beskar armour until later on. He used an alternative called duraplast, an extremely tough composite material that can take intense damage without degrading. Only later when he became leader of the Mandalorians did he make the switch. Mandalorian iron is very heavy and in the old novels from Legends which the new canon draws on for inspiration, old Mandalorians can be teased as being short, a possible effect of wearing heavy armour for long periods of time from a young age.
