Forgot bout them then I remembered COD Chameleon checked his channel out then remembered machinima.. wish I would of recorded back in the day I was a beast in my COD days.. knife only nukes or 1v6s in S&D w knife or intervention. Man I miss those days, LA summer weather 3pm was out of school smoking blunts on the roofs then hitting the food truck then going home & destroying in MW2 simpler times.

The machinima logo was in front of so many videos that I didn’t even know they were a company at the time. I just thought it was a genre of video. All this drama totally flew over my head at that age and it’s super interesting to see what was actually going on.

The logo being on videos outside their channel is how I discovered them personally, almost a whole decade ago. They're where I discovered many people I still watch today. Similarly that's how I found out about Rooster Teeth but I never really watched their stuff even when Machinama people went to them.

I think a lot of us knew Machinima were shitty but were just too young to care. The creators just dealt with it because it was their only way of making income and content creation as a job was still in its infancy.

Another factor that helped lead to Machinima's downfall that wasn't mentioned in this video was when they made the huge sponsorship deal with Levi's back in 2012. It ended up being their only sponsor for the whole year. Machinima started boasting about the creators they had under their umbrella, name dropping Pewdiepie in particular. Some people at Levi's then looked him up and were greeted by a video where Pewds was screaming about r*pe at the top of his lungs. Levi's got angry that Machinima wasn't clear about what kind of content they were associating themselves with and pulled out of the deal.

Dayemtheking _ people search for videos? You know there are youtubers with little subscribers but get a lot of views. You should be saying how youtubers with so much subscribers barely get any views.
@Oi1Suzy
@Oi1Suzy 4 жыл бұрын
@Dayemtheking _ It's the search/recommendation algorithm. If you watch a certain type of content (i.e. pointless and irrelevant news/retrospective about crap no one cares about with generic game footage background) it will recommend similar types of content. When you run the filter manually against this guy you get commentary channels like Optimus, ItsAGundam, EmpLemon. Low energy, clickbait videos that always sit around the 10min mark to game to algorithm.

No one learned anything. Entire state governments are like Machinima and so many of their cities are going to collapse, too. And it won't be as much of a "haha, I remember those hijinks" when it happens. It'll be more like, "remember that one time when the homicide rate went up to 50 million, because the globalists and CCP successfully turned Americans against each other".

@drivingsports

appledong At that time we were one of the larger automotive channels on KZfaq at around 30k subs with views that outperformed many other channels. KZfaq was tiny by comparison back then. I did an interview with Reuters at the time if you really care you can look that up. By the end of 2012 we put our YT channel on the back-burner (instead, focusing on international syndication of our show, which actually did much better $$ there than on YT.) Only at the end of 2018 did we put focus back on the YT channel, which has been growing steadily since. Subs are important, but they aren’t relevant in terms of ultimate reach or revenue.

I don't understand how Machinima was greedy... most of the company was made up of small, moderate success, channels. Smaller success means larger percentages have to be taken to achieve the same result as a low percent on a highly successful channel. (Machinma needed to pay for the support network that It provided) And as for the lengths of the contracts, KZfaq was (and still is mostly) an unstable and volatile platform in which entire genres and industries can be destroyed at any given moment. To have any sort of income security on KZfaq, even to this day, is worth every penny that they gave up, however, because KZfaq decided that they will monetize gaming videos many of these KZfaq giants started to realise that they could simply ditch their income security and make more money, until they realised that they couldn't because they hastily signed contracts without taking them seriously...

Machinima was pretty impactful here in Brazil and in many ways shaped KZfaq gaming perhaps even more than in the rest of the world. Their network actually helped kickstart a bunch of channels that weren't economically viable by the amount of views (which was an issue cause they burned through their cash reserves), and they also had a couple of "poster boys" (Monark and VenomExtreme) who were a big deal before they entered the network, though it was never proved officially, Machinima ran them a bot to bolster the amount of subs they had, in the beginning it was foul play to deceive the algorithm and get them more spotlight, but it got quite silly when around 2014 they had each about 3M subscribers, which was a ridiculous amount back then, and meanwhile their views were fluctuating around 200-250k and after 2016 got even lower. To this day their mostly dead channels have an insane amount of subs from the bots.

@GwyndolinOwO
@GwyndolinOwO 4 жыл бұрын
@@JZStudiosonline i wouldn't say it was POPULAR but having words copywritten that are used by artistic communities also really sucks- because to them its an everyday word. Its something that they should at least keep in mind (and the fact another large group like roosterteeth ALSO used the word frequently should be enough for it to be kind of dodgy to claim it). I can find books and pages talking about machinima (making films from video games) dating back to the early 2000's as well so by the time the trademark was made the word used in that context wasn't that "new" I'm not a copywrite expert by far but there's good and bad ways to go about it. A restaurant pulled something somewhat similar to this. The word "Hon". the restaurant was in a town where the word was pretty popular to use, and when she sent out "cease-and-desists" the people there weren't happy- at all. I've never heard the word used in public or online ever but its that kind of backlash in communities it impacts that really hurts them. (she was in an episode of kitchen nightmares, so her business wasn't doing the best)

I still find it crazy how much of a big deal Machinima was back then, seeing the logo basically assured you that you were gonna watch a really good video and how a lot of content creators kept talking about how amazing it would be to be partnered with Machinima. Now that they no longer exist it kinda sucks because it's like witnessing Cartoon Network being shutdown and all those memories of watching your favorite entertainment from them are just memories now. Even to this day if I happen to stumble across an old video that still has the Machinima intro it instantly becomes a blast from the past for me. Don't get me wrong, I still acknowledge that they're a bad company but the memories are still good and it's kinda sad to know that despite the bad rep they were still part of the golden age of KZfaq before KZfaq got better and then started going downhill to this day.

I don't think the fall of Machinima was tied solely to their aggressive and bullish business practices. There was also the loss of some of their biggest talent on the platform. For example, Inside Gaming was arguably their biggest draw on the channel. At the time, it was the go-to place for gaming news coverage. I have fond memories of coming home from middle and high school and refreshing KZfaq to see if there was a new video from Inside Gaming, especially when E3 was happening (back when it had prestige and renown). It also helped that it had the crew of Adam Kovic, Bruce Greene, James Willems, Lawrence Sonntag, Sean Poole, Matt Peake, and Joel Rubin, which made the videos all the more enjoyable. When they announced back in 2015 that they were leaving Machinima, it was kind of the beginning of the end for Machinima. They lost possibly their best team and arguably the best part about Machinima overnight. After that, everything felt bland and generic. The charm that Machinima had was drained and wrung out like a wet rag.

It has taken me a while to bring up the courage to watch anything on this... I was one of the unlucky ones... I was chewed up, spat out and left ... Well lets just say it broke me. But it wasn't just them... KZfaq has to take some blame. They allowed this. They didn't care as long as they still made their dollar. Machinima was just the john that fucked us... KZfaq were the pimps facilitating it. It's a long time since I left and i am still so angry and bitter... To the point it became part of me... They stole the best part of me. I will never ever forgive KZfaq for it. Or the fact i spent years hating myself because I stupidly blamed myself.... Even thought I was so dumb I mustve deserved to be taken in and taken for a ride. This video doesn't go into how it burned a lot of us out. How they stole not just money but kinda stole our innocence... Worst part is I took that self hatred and loathing... I turned it outwards and projected. I still do... I don't know how to undo what happened... I don't think I ever will... It's like a scar that is always there and never fully heals. I want to remember the good parts... And there were. The people I met. The friends I made... Even after certain creators that would go on to be big helped me ... Unfortunately the damage was done. I really wish this video went into that... It wasnt all about money... It was the fact we put our blood, sweat, tears ... our hearts and souls... everything... into content for them to treat us like factory workers. Just there to provide content to increase their brand. Sorry for the essay... As I said... I am still bitter. On my own I probably would have never broken 10k subs... But at least i'd still have that part of me that could laugh and smile... Sorry again. It's just... Them being killed doesn't feel like it's enough... But nothing ever will be. I wont ever find the old me. Thank you for posting that though... I didn't know that was another scummy thing they did to add to the list.

There was a series a videos on Machinima and there were two seasons it was called battlefield friends and some videos still hang around as they have been re-uploaded by smaller KZfaq creators but they're almost all gone the videos were so good as well but they're almost all completely gone and the ones that weren't re-uploaded are gone forever and some of those were my favorite ones it makes me really sad :(

No mention of Papa Sark? He was there on the front lines, helping people escape their contracts from within the company and seeing to it that the content they created for Machinima would be given back to the creators. He was the real MVP

The one problem with this for me is, while I am genuinely interested in this story and these events, videos like this always show up when what I'm looking for is *real* machinima. As in, the medium of using a video game or other software engines to produced scripted animated films.
@razerow3391
@razerow3391 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean real? LOL. The website came before the term was coined to mean animations made from game assets...Up until then they were called after whatever they were made in like the Quake ones that were called "quake movies" it wasn't until well after 2000 that the term spread because people liked it! So technically this is the REAL machinima and you are looking for the other one. Even if it weren't... Do you get angry at Ford because the name is also a word? What about Strabucks, since Starbuck is a god and also a character from Battlestar Gallactica. Try just adding "animation" to the search. Hardly rocket science.

Regardless of all of this, Machinima brought COUNTLESS creators to the forefront, and gave viewers an amazing experience. Half the channels I ended up watching back in those days came from discovering them on Machinima. It was the nexus point for all machinima content. Sucks they were so whack though

Is it worth the lives it actually fucked up? Those of us that didn't have the motivation, heart or mental health to continue... For every 1 that went on to get stronger there were 9 of us burned out, angry and just hurt that youtube allowed it. I know what you mean... But it's kinda like saying its worth destroying the rainforest just so you can have a nice wooden table. Yes it's worth it to YOU but what about the native people and wildlife? It's a very one sided view.

They didn't just screw over gaming channels, there was an animation channel that made a series called Battlefield Friends (about the games Battlefield 3, 4, Hardline, and now 2042; now their channel is Neeb's Gaming and they are still making them). When the contract was signed, apparently Machinima got the rights to the series, so when they went bankrupt Neeb's Gaming was unable to produce any more content for Battlefield Friends for a long time, even though they were the creators (somehow it got sorted out though because they are making them again). Battlefield Friends also wasn't a super small series, it was popular enough that the devs of Battlefield (EA DICE) actually put multiple easter eggs referencing Battlefield Friends across multiple Battlefield games.

I remember Machinima for Arby 'n' the Chief, The Forgotten Spartans, all that kind of old stuff, you know, the stuff that Machinima is actually defined as (to loosely quote DigitalPh33r / Jon CJG, Machinima is the art of creating a form of entertainment utilising video games as the foundation). Ironically, Xanatos, a HL2 KZfaqr made a skit in "The GMan Squad" where the future of Machinima as a network and as a creative art form was solely frag movies and trickshot montages, which is pretty much exactly what it is.

I remember being subscribed to Machinima back in the days because I really liked some of they shows they put out. The problem being "some of the shows" because as soon as I subscribed, my feed on KZfaq was just FULL of unprofessional "guy talks over MW2 gameplay" videos. This was also back in the day where your homepage was the same as your "subscribed to these channels" page. My homepage on KZfaq was basically useless because every single spot where my subscribed channels were supposed to be was just Machnima mass produced trash.
