Unlike many physicists and mathematicians of the time in Central and Eastern Europe, who were surprisingly naive about what was happening in Germany and the Soviet Union, Szilard was politically astute.

Absolutely true! Szilard kept his important papers in suitcases so that he could travel at a moment’s notice.

Too bad he lived out of suitcases and basically died alone and as with most nuclear physicists who "got their hands dirty" almost died by one form of Cancer or another. It is amazing that he found a way to heal himself.
