I’ve been walking and navigating my way around Dartmoor all my life. I consider myself quite good at reading a map but when I’m asked to explain how I do it or to teach a family member how it’s done, I’m useless. From now on I will just tell them all to watch, subscribe and share your channel . You explain things in such a fantastic way, be it map reading or about equipment, you are a joy to watch. This must be the best video I have seen on this subject ! Very clear insruction and explanation , each step clear as ice ..I think one of the main reasons other than your obvious knowledge is the clear slow voice you use . I don’t normally add comments but this was a really good video, there was a lot of content and it was explained very well, I can see you have done this before, I will agree when you say when you walk on a bearing in thick fog it is difficult to hit what you have set your bearing too. I spent one day walking the pennine way on peat bog having to cover a distance of about 25 miles and I was on my own you learn quickly. But great video I am teaching my son as we are going out soon for his first walk on a national park. Thanks

Even though I learnt to map read as a basic skill many years ago there were lots of useful & interesting bits I got out of this brilliant video. The delivery as ever from Shamus is clear and concise and I recommend it to anyone starting out in navigation or just looking to hone their existing skills. Bro, you just saved 10 people from loosing themself. It always bothered me that someone gets lost in Yosemite National Park, never to be seen again. I realize many things could have happened, but it is so easy to veer off a road and panic sets in. Within a few minutes, a person thinks they are lost when in fact they are just 100 meters off course.

Many years since I used a map compass and felt a refresher would be useful. This has been thoroughly enjoyableto watch, everything put into simple terms with excellent commentary throughout. I would seriously recommend to both novices and those with a very basic understanding. This is definately a go to video to refresh my memory before setting out across country on longer walks.
