The Marine Carbon Cycle. NordVPN Cyber Month Deal! Go to nordvpn.com/naturalworldfacts to get a 2-year plan plus 1 additional month with a huge discount.
The marine carbon cycle consists of the biological pump, the carbonate pump and the physical pump. The biological processes of respiration, predation, death and decomposition, along with physical processes such as the thermohaline circulation, work together to remove carbon from the atmosphere and sequester it in the oceans. In this video we'll explore what makes the oceans a net carbon sink, and why the marine world is so important to the global carbon cycle.
00:00 - An Introduction to the Marine Carbon Cycle
01:52 - The Biological Pump - Diffusion of Carbon
02:36 - The Biological Pump - The Role of Phytoplankton
03:42 - The Biological Pump - Predation and the Food Web
04:52 - The Biological Pump - Diel Vertical Migration
06:30 - The Biological Pump - Marine Snow and the Deep Sea
08:14 - The Biological Pump - Whale-falls and Carrion
09:38 - The Carbonate Pump - The Formation of Limestone
10:25 - The Carbonate Pump - The White Cliffs of Dover
11:02 - The Carbonate Pump - The Role of Coral Skeletons
12:05 - The Carbonate Pump - The Shell-building Animals
13:13 - The Physical Pump - Upwelling and Downwelling
14:08 - The Physical Pump - Thermohaline Circulation
15:08 - Conclusion: The Importance of the Marine Carbon Cycle

I wonder if this is a one man production, it's so high quality. Your videos give me the same experience I once had as a kid when I got fascinated by marine documentary, it's like I got transported into that world of wonder again. Your channel has been binge watch material, with me having seen every. Single. Video. Probably about 7 times over. I'm chronically ill and disabled, often ending up in the hospital or stuck in the house. Right now I have pneumonia (3rd time this year) and here I am, back to my comfort channel. I was that "weird" kid (I'm not weird, they just found out that I'm autistic :) ), i never liked cartoons. It was animal planet (specifically the shows "i shouldnt be alive" and "untamed and uncut"), HGTV and food network. This channel, for as long as it is going, will always be so important to me. You probably wont even see this but you get plenty of praise that I see you acknowledge. Never feel like you dont make an impact, because you are doing more than you will ever know. You have great talent, man. I think we are close in age, I hope to one day be showing my children your future internationally-recognized documentary on the television. David Attenborough couldnt have a more fitting successor- I hope you meet him.

I hate trying to have a conversation with either side. Both are ignorant. We are having an impact, is it so imperative we fix it at the cost of the world economy trying to stop it? No, let's invest in clean energy. Not solar or wind. We don't have the battery technology to make it worth it yet, but geothermal, and nuclear energy that's something I can get behind.

I made this blurb to copy and paste respond to them on the lack of C14 increase which is essentially the smoking gun ------------------ Fossil Fuels come from the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era, plants that had lignan were brand new at this time so decomposers that consumed lignan had not evolved yet to consume the dead trees, so the remains compacted into the sediment and stored carbon while the C14 isotopes started to deplete. The half life of the radioactive Carbon 14 isotope is 5,730 years. Fossil Fuels don't have C14 because it already depleted. Since the industrial revolution we've seen an increase in C13 and C12, NOT C14. Natural recent release has C14 and the increase of the ratio between C12 and C13 found in the atmosphere was the same ratio found in plants. This is how they knew Climate Change is anthropogenic, they saw that trend and knew there was absolutely only one thing it could of been, a plant older than 12,000 years that was depleted of C14...fossil fuels. There has been no increase in the level of Carbon 14, but there has been an increase in Carbon 12 and Carbon 13, fossil fuels don't have Carbon 14

This was very well done and I enjoyed it a great bit, but I do wish you had touched on the other side of the process. The calcium required to bind to the carbonate and make it into rock, and where it comes from.

Thank you so much! That really means a lot, marine biology has been a lifelong obsession of mine and it’s so rewarding to be able to create these videos. I’m currently a marine biology undergrad student at Southampton, just started this September and it’s been phenomenal so far! What’s the PhD course like?

@@NaturalWorldFacts outstanding! You should consider a career in scientific communication, you clearly have what it takes. We have some great programs in Australia for scientific communication (check the masters at the Australian National University as an example). I'm based in Tasmania and work on impacts of marine pollution. Currently focused on mesophotic ecosystems. It's an intense program, but plenty to discover! Marine biology is a field where you should really aim for postgraduate opportunities.

@Llama Thank you for the kind words and for making me aware of some of these opportunities! They sound very exciting, and pursuing science communication is absolutely something I’d love to do. Your PhD studies sound fascinating, those anthropogenic impacts are such an important thing to understand. It really excites me to learn that there’s been a monumental surge in focus on protecting marine ecosystems lately. We still have a long way to go, especially when pollution is concerned, but it certainly gives me hope. I haven’t given much thought to how far I’ll take my studies (i.e. a PhD etc). Part of me wants to study for as long as possible to become as qualified as I can, but another part of me is just so keen to get out there in the field and experience these ecosystems for myself as soon as possible.

@@NaturalWorldFactsThere is indeed more interest in protecting our oceans than before, but sadly it's because they've never been this threatened before. We are seeing some great resilience in various marine ecosystems, so I do have hope we still have time to protect most of it. And yeah you still have a long time to decide what to do after undergrad, don't stress about that now. Enjoy your degree and get out there and enjoy the oceans!

@Llama That’s definitely true. So many vital ecosystems are declining very rapidly - the reefs, the seagrass beds, the kelp forests, and very soon the scattered benthos communities if mining goes ahead. It’s a crucial time for marine science but I’m hopeful too. Thanks, I’m loving it so far and can’t wait to see where it takes me!

Hi! I love your videos, they are beautiful, rich and complete! Because english is not my native language I usually repeat some parts two or more times to understand clearly what you are explaining, so today I thought about dubbing your content in my language, do I have your permission to do that? I would state at the start of the video that the content is not mine, and I will give a direct link both in the video and in the description to your channel. Let me know if I can do it!
