I'm back!! Hope everyone enjoys the beginning of this new series! I'm quite happy with how this came out. The only thing I wish I did differently was not focus on the record times as much (when applicable). I will be doing that for the rest of the series to not obsolete the videos as much!

"Many people like to picture this as a bus," with a little bus graphic, and then immediately moving onto what the frame rule system is without explaining the bus analogy is the funniest thing i've heard about mario speedrunning since learning you can press half an A button incredible video! :)

Despite this only being the first part, I already love this series! Definitely looking forward to seeing just how deep you take this iceberg. The GBA remakes certainly pique my interest, so I'm extra eager to see you cover those. Also, feel free to reach out if you have any questions at all regarding Super Mario Maker 2 once you begin research for it; I've been involved with its speedrunning scene since the game's release, and I'm always happy to splurge about how the Story Mode categories in particular have developed over time.

Nice video! Always cool to see some handheld mario recognition :) Something I'd like to quickly mention about the NSMB part is that the rng manipulation you showed is actually an outdated method and we currently use a much more powerful manipulation that means we don't have to reset back to the main menu every run and gives much better moves from the overworld red blocks and hammer bros (in fact in world 8 its guaranteed to be almost perfect each time!) and on average saves a lot of time (~5-8 seconds) over runs that don't use it. Its really unique how it works too as it exploits a flaw in the game's random number generator which causes the game's rng to loop around the same 8 values indefinitely, however since this only happens when the game is loaded on very specific dates/times we have to use a program to calculate exactly what date and time to use for it to work. This actually makes it impossible to do on wii u vc due to how rng works on that platform and now puts wii u vc at a slight disadvantage compared to ds.

The thing that Lost Levels was too hard is a common misconception. Nintendo of America actually thought it was too similar to the original SMB and didn't want to bring it over for that reason.

NOA did reject some games because they were too hard. I could see it going either way, but I lean more on the too similar theory as well. Look at how the Castlevania trilogy were all really unique games or how Zelda 1 and 2 are so vastly different. Back then there was more of an effort to differentiate sequels from one another. The Lost Levels sure aren’t great anyways. You have to beat the game like 8 times to unlock the final level, no thank you

@@fan0 And why is suddenly a lie just because of a YT comment? 🤦♂️ In the first and third Super Mario Bros., Nintendo of America changed Mario's life meter to be easier in the US: in the Japanese version Power Up Mario goes back straight to little Mario when you get hit one time, in the US Mario just loses the power up. It's not so far-fetched or a "misconception" to consider not releasing Lost Levels in US because of its difficulty.

50:58 To be more specific, certain sound effects affect the RNG. One of those sound effects is the double jump sound effect. There are other sound effects that affect the RNG like the wall kick sound effect, but the double jump is the only one relevant to 1-1 in any%.

The Mario 64 iceberg arguably popularized this whole trend so this one has to be a perfect bookend of sorts. Looking forward to see strats of lesser talked about games. And btw, the Mario devs do consider Yoshi's Island as a mainline Mario game, since the gigaleak flat out reveled its working title of Super Mario Bros 5.

Yeahh, Yoshi's Island is a heavily debated case. Mine and others reasons I have taken from, suggest that for it to be mainline game, you should be playing as Mario. I would label it the beginning of the "Yoshi" series personally. At least with this series I will be covering every mario-related game at some point no matter what, so don't worry!

Mario lost levels is a pretty hard game, when i beat it I would have so many game overs, I've only ran the warpless 8- 4 category on snes, which took me a whole 1:37 to do, and it's the only 1 of the 6 mariohour games I've never beat without dying.

Great video! I wish you had gone in a bit more detail on the movement tech from SM3DW, like the stuff with infinite speed increase on ice levels and the cat suit. No one is really capable of getting a WR IN all 18 of the mainline mario games, even darbian out of the 6 marihour games he only got WRS in 3 of them if you include the mario world snes category extensions, 1 and now the WRS are even harder to get then back then. So yah I do NOT think 1 single person getting 1 WR in each one of the 18 mainline games is possible.

I don't like SMW; I know I know. I can't explain it but basically everything about the game just turns me off unlike Mario 3 which just feels magical in every way. However, I cannot deny that the tricks and tech displayed by SMW players is absolutely astonishing. I don't think it would be controversial to say that if SMW hadn't had so many gimmicks added to it, that Super Mario Maker and Kaizo hacks wouldn't have become the high skill ceiling games they are today. It's weird for me to say but as much as I dislike SMW on an aesthetic and casual level; if I was a speedrunner it would totally be the game I think I'd have the most fun trying to master. Anyway, great video and I can't wait till we sink deeper into the depths... Together.

Yeah I had to establish a cutoff for WRs unfortunately or this video would've never been done. For all the future parts, I will probably still show leaderboards, but Im going to emphasize specific WRs a lot less to make it age better
