The Martian has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, and it’s a surprisingly close adaption of the novel it’s based on. Now it’s time for us to read between the lines to find the differences between the book and the film. Subscribe: goo.gl/9AGRm
The Martian tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon in the film) who is left stranded on Mars after the rest of his crew-mates think that he’s been killed. Both the book and the film follow Watney as he struggles to figure out a way to survive as long as he can while desperately hoping he can make it long enough to be rescued. Unlike most of our What’s the Difference subject matter, The Martian movie stays incredibly close to the book, with only a few changes made in order to keep the film interesting. At that, it’s time pull back the proverbial shower curtain on all the differences between the book and the film.
Have you read The Martian? Are you a fan of the film The Martian? Were you upset by any of the changes they made from the book to the movie? Are you a fan of science fiction films? What’s your favorite?
What other works would you like to see us explore on What’s The Difference?

you forgot the biggest missing thing from the book! in the book, everyone on earth is commenting about how they can only imagine what mark could be thinking about all alone on mars. It then immediately cuts to mark saying, " how can Aquaman control whales if he can only talk to fish?" best line in the whole thing, and they left it out of the movie!

+Daniel Allen The line actually did make it into one of the supplemental bits showing Hermes crew during the buildup to the mission (a lot of that stuff is pretty fantastic IMO). What I liked about the film is that Watney has a lot of lines that aren't in the book, but still sound very much like things that book-Watney would say. Like "It's been seven days since I ran out of ketchup."

Actually, the book _originally_ ended with a little scene where some kid walks up to him on the street and asks him if he'd ever go back if they'd let him, and he answers something like "Are you out of your fucking mind?" :P

It was originally published on the web, remember? I read it there. They cut this from the final published book. web.archive.org/web/20121010202516/www.galactanet.com/martian/martian26.html Very last paragraph ;) (and yes, it is possible to retrieve the complete original manuscript off that site, lol)

Here's a little bonus for you then... if you go to the remains of the original place where The Martian was published, you'll see it still contains the thing that originally inspired the story; the program Andy Weir wrote to calculate space trajectories on the constant-acceleration ion engine, and the files for the actual trajectories used in the book :) www.galactanet.com/martian/

Watney at the end in the capsule ISN'T shivering in fear, but crying in elation because he can FINALLY experience the emotional relief of facing the end of his gruesome endurance test on Mars. Before that he couldn't let himself go emotionally as he had to keep it together or else risk death. But, at the end when salvation is finally within reach the emotion he's had bottled up until then finally begins to leak out. Or, in other words, he really is human.

The dropping of Watney accidentally destroying Pathfinder really bugged the shit out of me. If he never loses communication with NASA, there's nothing stopping them from giving him permission to board the Ares 4 MAV. Which means he's not technically a space pirate. But they still have him talk about being a space pirate,and even claims that NASA still can't give him permission. He even tells NASA to call him a space pirate and Vincent figures out his reasoning. Its really weird to drop such a huge plot point but keep one tiny bit of it that makes no sense on its own.

The movie sort of covered this. In the book, Watney can only take the middle section of the Pathfinder lander, leaving the 'wings' at the landing site, one of which has the ground rod. I believe this fact was specifically mentioned in the book. In the movie, the rovers have cranes on them, so he grabs the whole pathfinder lander. This would include the ground rod, so there would be no shorting of circuits. A relatively minor detail, but one that has pretty significant implications for parts of the story when you think about it.

What I found most perplexing was that in the book, the scene of the first supply shot exploding was described in a VERY cinematic way. I fully expected that scene to be show in detail, with the stuff sliding around and the bolts breaking. Instead, it was just a bang in the distance.

You missed the part in the book, right after he safely enters the Hermes, where he says something like, "If this was a movie, the whole crew would be running in to greet me, but that doesn't happen because blah-blah-blah." In the movie, they do exactly the thing that the book says they didn't do (and they wouldn't have -- they've got to perfectly pull off a slingshot orbit to get back home or they all die -- that's a really high priority). Also, the whole Iron Man maneuver creates a problem because Watney has broken ribs. Remember, in space, no one can hear you scream (like a little girl). :)

ben swolo in the book, there was a plan for Johanssen to survive even if the supply probe failed. The others were doomed, so they would all commit suicide and then she would live off of the remaining rations and later by cannibalising her crew mates. She was chosen to survive because she was the youngest and also the smallest meaning she could survive on fewer calories. Luckily for everyone involved, the supply probe was successful.

This movie is one of the best adaptations I've ever seen. It actually improved a few things from the book, such as having commander Lewis going on outer space to save Watney. Evelina999 It makes perfect sense. She was already disobeying Nasa's orders in the first place. That stunt was risky as fuck, it makes sense she would put herself on the line instead of sending Beck since she didn't want to "lose another man on space" (her words, more or less). The Iron Man thing was silly, I agree. That would never work.

CidGuerreiro1234 That's why he was tied to a cord. He wanted to just fly out there without it because there was a chance that he couldn't reach Mark, but she forbade it because she didn't want to lose another man in space. Beck wasn't in much danger with the chord attached and losing a captain is much worse than an ,,outer space guy".

Evelina999 Beck had the least amount of character development in the book (and the movie, for that matter). Other than being in a relationship with Johansen he was kinda just there. I think Andy Weir wanted to give him some of the spotlight before the end of the book, but the scene with Lewis was much, much better. I couldn't help but to think this is how it should've been in the book (which I loved anyway).

The change to the ending almost ruined the whole movie for me. They spend the entire film setting up Beck as The Best EVA Guy Ever - they actually make a point of it - and then you can almost see the moment the producers went "Oh wait, Jessica Chastain's a bigger star" and went for the "let's throw logic out the window" bit instead. Frustrating.

my favorite even in the book was when he nearly blew up the hab with the whole 70% hydrogen incedent. im just amazed the nice OPEN FLAME on his (admitidly source of said problem originaly) hydrogen burner didnt result in the described mushroom cloud where his hab used to be scenario. still like how he still managed to blow himself up a little STILL even after draining the O2 to burn off the hydrogen safely. the book was so much better...

The joke in the book was that if a movie about Watney was ever made, the sequence would be more epic, where he'd been ordered not to do the Iron Man. In a bit of meta humor, the movie version had him doing Iron Man.

Another huge difference to me that I'm surprised you guys didn't mention, was how in the book Mark makes frequent references to how short the lifespans of the environment suits are, and his trying to conserve them and their parts becomes one of the plot's major challenges. This facet isn't even touched upon in the movie.

I'm still annoyed I didn't get to see film Mark listen to Stayin Alive, also I really wanted Rocket Man and Life on Mars to be included on the soundtrack, but I can settle for Starman I guess :L I actually thought film Mark was angrier than book mark, he got really pissed when he found out his crew didn't know he was still alive where as in the book he was mildly annoyed and then instead of saying such a bad word that they didn't even show it in the film, he typed "look! Boobies! (.)(.)"

I thought the biggest omission was the inner monologue. I just finished the book last night and then rewatched the movie today for the first time since the theatrical release. The book explains - in great detail - why the Hab airlock blew but the movie doesn't get into that. The book explains in great detail Watney's calculations on how much water he'll need, how much oxygen he'll need, all the technical details of how he manages his resources. And of course, the big problem he faces when he flips his rover on his way to the Ares 4 MAV site. None of these make the movie 'worse' because this is a mainstream movie and pacing matters. But it could have done without Donald Glover's goofy explanation of how a gravity assist works. Also, the ending in the book is far more poignant, emphasizing human capacity to work together and help each other. Far more resonant than the scene we got with Watney's new gig as an instructor. All in all a good movie but a great book.

I'm surprised you left out one of the creepiest part of the book: the one in which Johanssen, the Ares tech specialist, speaks with her father via comm just before the chinese-assisted resupply mission, and she tells him that she's been chosen as the designated survivor in case the resupply mission fails and they can't bring supplies on board, and then she adds that, in that case, she would have to eat her crewmates corpses! ...no such scene in the movie...

Wooooow wait up! You forgot the most important difference!! Matt Damon is NOT a SPACE PIRATE! I should elaborate I suppose.. It is the result of the difference between the book and movie stated around 4:30 . The difference in the communications being short out in the book and not the movie. Consequently, Watney goes on, without communicating with NASA, to appropriate NASA vehicles intended for other missions. He has no explicit permission from NASA to do so, which makes it that Watney is hijacking it. This is wat makes Watney a space pirate. Since Matt Damon in the movie version keeps in contact with NASA and they basically tell him what to do he is no space pirate. Sorry Matt, you're no space pirate, only book Mark is.

One difference you neglected to mention is when the Hab blew up. Watney went through this whole process of sealing the air lock he was in so he could take his helmet off to repair the suit by literally cutting the suits arm off, to glue it over the hole. Then gluing the hole where his arm was. Then the part where he spent the night literally throwing himself against the side of the air lock to role it to the Hab in order to get close enough to get out, get a new suit, and rush to a Rover before he ran out of air.

This was a great movie and a fantastic adaptation. The movie obviously wasn't as good as the book just because of runtime restrictions of the medium, but it was as good as it realistically could have been and smartly kept the things that played more into the strengths of a visual medium. Shame that they cut the aquaman line though. There isn't really a good place to fit that kind of thing in in a movie, but it was great.
@juffan

The biggest issue with the book is that because it is mostly from the perspective of Marc Watney, who always maintains a light, positive, attitude towards his situation, it's hard to get a sense of the overwhelming tension. The book feels to easy, when the circumstances certainly aren't.

@ZeteticPhilosopher
@ZeteticPhilosopher 4 жыл бұрын
Tremere I mean, I think Cinefix pretty clearly registered some level of discomfort in their tone. However, it’s worth noting the the reason whitewashing is considered a problem isn’t because switching a character’s ethnicity is inherently bad, but rather that doing so occasionally compromises the story and is rightfully seen as pandering to a white audience. It’s the reasoning behind the switch that matters, and in this case it’s hard to know if it was “right man for the job” or “any brown guy will do”.
