Did capitalism really destroy the Greek economy? It wasn't the case that Greece became ever more capitalist until it got into trouble. because of the fatal flaws inherent in capitalism. The existence of freely available capital allowed Greek politicians to borrow beyond their country's ability to repay, as well as have generous social policies that kept them in power, but this isn't really a result of capitalism per se. In a pre-capitalist society, Greece could have imported technology with a promise to pay it back - for example with olive oil or wine - and then not be able to do that as the technology they imported did not generate the required improvements to production required. At this point, the country that gave them that technology could have demanded payment and the Greek citizens would have had to go without olive oil and wine until the debt was paid. I think it is more as a result of liberal politicians not imposing the rules outlined in the EU's Stability and Growth Pact. Greece became addicted to debt and is not going through terrible withdrawal symptoms. The international banking crisis didn't make Greek politicians run up huge debts to give overly generous benefits to Greeks. Of course you could argue that the lenders were also unwise to make the loans but this doesn't relieve Greece of its responsibility to pay them back. You could also argue that the ability the IMF has to effectively bail out countries that get into debt problems does little to discourage politicians from taking these risks.
