[ADJUSTED BRIGHTNESS} From an older series of The Master Game chess tournament than is generally available. Viktor Korchnoi was one of the leading chess players of his era. As well as Korchnoi, Robert Byrne from the US also qualified for the World Championship Candidates in 1974.

I can’t say enough good things about the presentation of this. The way its formatted is really cool and I wish that todays games could be presented this way….

Compare the mid-1970s/early 1980s age profile with today's Candidates, a generation younger.

I think this has a lot to do with the emergence of engines, which allow faster development without needing human teachers. I used to play in the 60s 70s and 80s and it was much harder to get beyond Elo 2000-2100. Books, magazines and if you're very lucky, or show extraordinary promise, you might get a teacher.

@@Lupinicus1664 I agree, and also modern games are so much more accessible than in that generation. Players had to wait for monthly bulletins or magazines back in the day. Now games are streamed live, the budding 10 year old GMs can follow all top games at the touch of a button.

Byrne says around 5 min in that his light squared bishop would best be placed on g2 or h3, so why does he not just play g3 from the start instead of wasting all those tempi?

Incredible how Byrne's " clearly better " position does not result in a win

If only Byrne had sacrificed his chicken against Spassky.

I looked. There is nothing in the FIDE rules about sacrificing a chicken at the board.

Not so much the absolute top players. Karpov, Fisher and Kasparov were all relatively young when they became champions.

I dont understand developing the bishop to d3, its still a common move in this Winawer variation, GMs play it, seems like a waste of time i dont see what white gets out of it

Well it forces lines, it would be suicidal for black to castle right away due to a Greek gift sacrifice on h7. It clears the way for casting, it potentially stops Nf5 or at least leaves a trade open if Nf5 happens and too much pressure builds on d4, it potentially supports a king side pawn advance; f2-f4, f4-f5..

@benjaminschooley3108 Right, but none of that is gonna happen, blacks just gonna hit you with c4 and you have to move
@delboy9234
@delboy9234 2 ай бұрын
I suppose it does get Black to commit to c4, so at least then White knows Black has committed those pawns, and removed the central pressure to some degree.
