If I remember correctly, Knee wasn't really competing regularly at this time (input delay or something like that), and everyone was sick of JD and Saint dominating all the tournaments. Everybody wanted Knee to win and make a comeback. They had a rivalry and weren't in good terms, that's why that handshake was iconic and shocking at the same time.
@TheWizardofMNT
@TheWizardofMNT 7 ай бұрын
I remember hearing they had some kind of beef so that handshake was a big surprise to everyone. But it was great to see the respect despite the conflict, if that really were the case at the time.
@willus259
@willus259 7 ай бұрын
The beef went back to T6 days, from what I remember reading in the Tekken Zaibatsu Forums, Knee kept challenging JDCR to death matches but that would mean JDCR had to travel really far to Green Arcade and it was too far for him. Knee called him out on it and that's where the beef started.

The crowd, the commentary, the history of these 2 players, THAT HANDSHAKE. Not to mention the greatest examples of elite tekken ever. I watched the match so many times and it blows me away each and every time. Still almost 6 years later we’re talking about it.

From what I have read into their beef, JDCR ranked down Knee in a death match (back in Tekken 6 IIRC), and afterwards Knee wanted a rematch, but JDCR didn't give him one immediately (probably due to travel issues). Then, what caused the beef was Knee making some comments about JDCR avoiding him and such, where I would assume that he at the very least said that JDCR is scared of him, if not more. I say this, because I also read that Knee came out and said that he went out of line with his comments back in TTT2 days, but that 'olive branch' didn't resolve their beef. There are TTT2 sets with wins for each of the two, as well as EVO 2016 T7 set (where Knee picked Akuma, super broken on release, against JDCR), and no matter who won there was no handshake. What's more is that their beef spread among their friend groups as well. Chanel for example congratulates Saint after losing to him in TWT 2016 Grand Finals (referenced in the video, and yes, I know it wasn't called TWT but TKOIFT), but they were not on speaking terms even back in 2019, long after Knee and JDCR had eased tensions. Still though, Knee had lost back to back major grand finals to Nobi at TWT 2015, and Saint at Evo 2016, and afterwards had a rather poor showing at TWT 2016. On the other hand early 2017 JDCR was showing signs of invincibility, and would go on to dominate the entire year (with Qudans being his kryptonite). And this is what makes me respect Knee a lot for offering this handshake. At a point in time where his trajectory was going rather south, and JDCR was dominating, in front of a massive crowd, after a heartbreking reverse 3-0, followed by another loss, he decided to be the bigger man and offered a handshake which easily could have been rejected. In fact I would give huge props to the philippino crowd for both amplifying the hype around the sets, as well as creating the perfect occasion for this legendary handshake!

It was crazy how JDCr was dropping a lot of his staple combos that he wouldn't usually drop, not only that but also Knee making a lot of mistakes. You can really see that both of these Players who are at the very peak of Tekken, crumble under the pressure and stress. Big Props to both of them during Rev Major!

I'm so incredibly happy and grateful that this is one of those matches i got to witness in my lifetime. 30 years from now, the new generation will be looking back and talking about the titans that came before them. These two will definitely be in those ranks without a doubt. Thank you, legends 🙏

What is also important to note was that at the time Feng gaming wasn’t really a thing. He was completely slept on. So when Knee pulls him out in the Jack and Dragunov meta, it was even extra hype. The crowd was insane. Loved this match
