It’s been a decade without a ucl and they wasted the money they got from selling. Plus he made it to a ucl final, and mbappe sold. Easily the best of the rest after cr7 and Messi. Fans loved him, loved his skills/hairstyles etc. He was idolised by a huge number of young fans including people who were fans of other teams! He was never going to be more of an icon than Messi overall (GOAT) so he had what he had and it wasn't enough for his ego. Simple as that. Barca didn't collapse due to Neymar's transfer btw, they collapsed because they bought absolutely dreadful replacements and the coach was a negative football idiot. He was never bigger than the club and it's a pity he didn't realise that. His move to PSG was an immense disappointment (CL Final aside) and he has just faded to nothing. Such a huge pity for such a talent.

Messi as basically a one man army in 2017 and onwards until he decided to join Neymar…the lack of trophies cost Barca more money which is a reason as to why they couldn’t afford him and he had to leave as well. THEN, Messi saw what it’s like playing second (or third fiddle) to Mbappe, who was an absolute BRAT to Messi, shoving him on camera, trying to be taking Neymar’s pens…until both of them pulled a “Neymar” AGAIN, and left Mbappe to his little kingdom. All chances of legit ucl runs escaped the French once the two of them left Mbappe, and Mbappe ended up losing to a cheap Dortmund side. I can’t help but turn my face to papa nassim and be like, you bet on the wrong horse buddy. Neymar left TWO huge gaps in two clubs, one after the other. It’s a lesson well learned.

@@paulanders4339 Well written reply but totally disagree, again. Barcelona didn't try to replace Neymar, he was clearly irreplaceable. They tried to get another dribbler with a younger age profile (Dembele) and another attacking midfielder (Coutinho) who was in that Iniesta mold (although not even in the same stratosphere) as future prospects. Both were mega flops and it was this immense waste of money by the board that hurt the club hugely; this has zero to do with Neymar. The club was/is in financial ruins over decisions like these. Neymars transfer from Santos to Barca itself was a financial nightmare in so many ways. I was sad to see him leave in 2017 but he clearly wasn't the reason for the teams/clubs downfall when he departed. His ego outgrew his humility and his desire to be No.1 at Barca (which was never going to happen) took him to new pastures but the grass was not greener and his late 20s/early 30s have been ultimately a massive hollow of what they could have been. Such a pity. Your point about PSG is irrelevant to my original point so I won't address it in terms of Mbappe etc.
