my man was so good, so strong and confident before the injuries, he just couldn't recover from them especially mentally. That fear was always there, the fear of getting injured again. He just wasn't same after that. Even though he won World Cup 2002 but his 1998 World Cup performance was far superior. One-of-a-kind in football history. He changed football with his explosiveness, speed, technique, and inspired future superstars such as Cristiano, Messi and many others. He was the football for many. When he was getting the ball, the concentration of fans was spiking through the roof because something bad about to happen. Thank you Ronaldo for memories.

I was at this game, I remember being amazed at baggio in that he could see the whole pitch even when looking the other way. Ronaldo owes his legacy a lot to him.

Atually thay bought him after 2002 world cup, some two years after this match and most of his top performances with inter (in the next two years he wont play much and not at the same level...he will mprove at real, given spaces and defences of la liga, but the younger ronnie was something else)

The issue with his knee started already after world cup 98, begining of that season. Even though the biggest injury happened later that season it had slowly started:/ That's the reason he doesn't look fully like himself

This is in 1999 and Ronaldo already has knee problems and it was before his first serious knee injury... You can see Ronaldo was not so fast as he was in 1997-98. The 100% real Ronaldo the Fenomeno was at 1994 until 1998. And he was not even at his prime age.

No, it was before. His first injury was in november 99 vs lecce. In his first game back against lazio in april 2000 he completely break his tendon.

@@27mf34 Exactly. This 98-99 season was such a sad one in my opinion. He was unbelievable in 97/98 and the expectations were high after Baggio joined Inter. R9 would play in the UCL for the first time, with a good team around him and real chances of winning, but this season was a disaster. I think he was dealing with tendinitis on both knees. He played 28 out of the 54 games the entire season, a lot on limited minutes. He cracked 70+ minutes in only 19 of them, scoring 15 gols and having 4 assists. He seemed to be in pain for most of the season and only looked like himself(although a bit rusty with his finishing) in the end of the season, when he played the last 8 games in the Serie A(including this one against Fiorentina), scoring 8 goals.This season was the beggining of the end for a prime R9 in my opinion.

Ronaldo un giocatore stratosferico. Rimane tuttavia uno se non due gradini sotto Van Basten quanto a lucidità sotto porta. Non ha mai avuto la capacità di inquadrare la porta come l'aveva Van Basten. Probabilmente anche perchè gioca a grandissima velocità.

No one is comparing him to Cristiano because of the WC but because of what he did while playing. Teenager playing professionally against adults in Europe. First ballon d’or at 21. Played against the toughest Italian defenders ever, making it look easy. In an era when players weren’t protected, wrapped in bubble wraps, rolling on the ground for nothing. His speed, skills, technique, game vision, dribbling, strength. Out with an injury for almost 2 years, return, not just win a WC but also the golden boot, player of tournament. Opinions of Mourinho, Buffon, Maldini, nesta, seerdof, Zidane, R10, Bob Robson, Henry, Cafu, Zatlan, Pep (and many more) as the best ever. No player is as complete as R9 was, in an era when football was brutal.
