When I was a little kid, my mom would buy me a Matchbox car every week when we went grocery shopping. I was 8 when Lesney went out of business. I still have several of the old English-made Lesney Matchbox cars, a reminder of my childhood. Excellent documentary!

Oh my goodness. This was the greatest discovery of all time for me on KZfaq today! One of the best docus I know. The funny thing is: Charlie is probably exactly my age group and I experienced all this myself at the same time - my father brought me my first Matchbox car when I was about 5 years old: the MORRIS PICK-UP TRUCK No.60. Others followed, and later I bought the cars myself. I also experienced the SUPERFAST period as the high point. Then it ended around 1972. I still have all my MATCHBOXES in the archive. And I take them out from time to time. And of course I still have the original catalogs from the 60s and 70s! All in all, I have to say: we had a wonderful childhood! - A thousand thanks to Charlie for this great journey through time.

It's been such a delight to watch this doc. Extremely well made allowing Charlie Mac to lead the narrative. I started collecting just about a year ago as I have a 2 year old who showed great signs of picking out small details of cars ,quizzed why the lamborghini mainline did not have a "radiator" since the previous mini cooper had one! Lol! I wish to make a small collection for her one day to leave a decent legacy behind

Sorry Ameya but I'm going to have to call your Bull Shit out on this one....Sorry You started collecting a year ago because your "2 Year Old" questioned why a model lamborghi didn't have a radiator yet the Model of the Mini did?.?.?.? I ain't no psychologist and I really hope you were joking because if your serious and you really think you've convinced anybody that your "2 year old girl ,Questioned you on Radiators being in different places on matchbox cars?" Then I would suggest you go seek some help (medical) or get your girl recognised as she's obviously A Genius, My 2 year old must be broken as he can't tell the difference from a Car to Van.........they all get named broom ,broom....and he might know wheels and Horn

I live near to where the original Lesney factory was based (its long gone and on its site is an expensive apartment complex). Lesney busses used to travel all over the borough, picking up and dropping off workers at various points. My sister worked at the Lesney factory and one of my main school projects was writing the history of the company, including drawing the queens carriage and horses. It was one of the biggest employers in the borough for many years. This was a lovely documentary of a fascinating man and his lifelong passion, which I hugely enjoyed.

I was never heavy on my toys, but over the years they were hammered by cousins etc. So many of these 50s cars and vans have passed through my hands and all that I have 60+ years later are two double deckers , both windowless and one a trolley bus that has lost its poles. Loved seeing these again and especially their packaging.

I remember buying the 1968 catalogue (I was 9 years old) and set out to get a whole set of 1 thru 75,,,,trouble was the new releases never stopped. The toy shops where I lived in England were owned by two brothers wearing brown hardware coats and they would follow you round the store to make sure you didn’t steal anything. The shops are long gone but the joy of collecting remains.

Hi. Great to watch such an interesting video of such an iconic piece of my childhood. I am not still a collector although do still have many of the cars and trucks all very well used and somewhat abused I am afraid to admit to up in my loft. My biggest memory from the early 60’s was that my lovely dad who worked in a car factory here in the Uk would buy me one most weeks on his payday and I so as you would imagine look forward to him coming home from work on a Friday. Thanks for allowing me to re visit such happy memories from such a wonderful time of my life. Paul 👍

Thanks for doing the documentary. You brought back memories of my parents buying the same stuff you showcased. I still collect too. Many brands but but mostly hotwheels and matchbox. I liked the fact you picked the 2020 releasse of the 1941 cadillac as example of a new matchbox cadting. It is a clasic matchbox casting. I feel that in many ways it is the older collectors. Not just matchbkx but other newer brands like greenlight and m2 are geared at the older collector. You have vefy good collection. I hope that you have some in mind to take over the collection when it comes time to fir its new home.

I started collecting Matchbox cars at a very young age and collected them up into my late teens. Then I stopped for several years though I liked to look at the latest models. Then a few years back, I began looking on Ebay and have bought several earlier models and have built up my collection little by little. Thanks for this documentary and I need to buy one of Mr. Mack's books as well.

Oh my God so many of these models I owned myself as a child. I loved my matchbox cars and bitterly resented the transition from the sustainable and useful box to the flashy and wasteful bubble pack. I also straddled the regular wheels-whizz wheels transition, often getting the same model with both kinds of wheels. My childhood collection contained a large amount of Dinky and Corgi as well, but Matchbox was better suited for the scale of the model railway. Great footage, great use of macro lens, beautiful connection by KZfaq of collector with people who covet what he collects. I collect vicariously through him, and this guy in particular is a dedicated completist collector. I enjoyed all the personal touches about Lesney the man and other people associated with Matchbox.

Hello, Mr. Mack! In 1969 I was an avid Matchbox 1-75 collector with about 300 models in various conditions, mostly new with box. When Stupidfast came out, I stopped collecting cold turkey, and felt a collecting 'withdrawl'. I sold the collection to a dear friend for $1,000 in 1989. Your colorful books allow me to vicariously enjoy my collection by proxy, and am amazed at the lengths you've achieved. Congratulations! Marty's Matchbox is my new favorite KZfaq channel. I wish you and I had grown up together--we're the same age! (I was in southern CA, age 13 in '69). Happy Holidays!

I was a collector in the 1970s. I had several hundred 1-75 models, a couple hundred Models of Yesteryear and about 100 MajorPack, SuperKings and SpeedKings. I stopped buying in the late 1980s, when the company was still independent. I probably have a lot of them still, in storage somewhere. If I'm not mistaken, Lesley was in talks with LEGO in it's early days, to be a distributor of the then-new plastic building kits.

This was great! I to grew up with matchbox growing up in the 70’s 80’s even early 90’s but then hot wheels bought the company and that ended the quality of matchbox for me, they were always going to stay second place to hot wheels cars which I never liked even growing up. I guess matchbox was more of an accurate reinterpretation of the design of a car but I did like the funky 70’s style cars.

This is so nostalgic. I grew up in the 70's and had hundreds of mb,every birthday I would get a super kings. It's strange as a 51 year old who visits toy fairs, I see thousands of loose played with mb in big boxes that sellers almost can't give away. Folks seem more inclined to collect dinky or corgi........ Matchbox made plastic soldiers and model kits and train sets as well, it covered all the bases for most kids. The hot wheels takeover was seen as a cheapening of the brand here in England, and lack that certain "something " that the originals had 😟

I wonder if Marty of Marty’s Matchbox Makeovers saw this? Or Paul Restorer?

His books are gold for my collection. I use his references when buying online or finding out and about. I have nowhere near as many and are not aiming too. I only collect 1953 to 1982 U.K. produced models. I very good video - surprisingly hadn’t seen it before.

That green MG 1100 in the thumbnail lured me into this video. I once had a stranger approach me in a parts store, who gave me a gift of that same matchbox car, complete with the dog in the passenger seat. He had been carrying it around for weeks, hoping to run into me. Weeks earlier, he had seen me driving down the street in our small Wyoming town in my green Austin America, and he decided that the stranger in the green America needed to have a matching matchbox car!

My weekly allowance was 50 cents in 1969 (I was 9) and coincidentally matchbox cars were also 50 cents. My favorite was the yellow cab chevy Impala taxi. Still have that one.

I loved my matchbox cars still had them till early 2000s. Now I regret partying with my toys. Although I bought a few cars later but don't replace the ones that you played with as a child.
