This is the newest Outdoor Vitals tent and I have to admit, I have major concerns about it.
This is TOGR's preview and first look of the Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P tent.

Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P Tent - First Look
What it is : This is a trekking pole tent from the company called Outdoor Vitals. This is new to the market and I have received countless requests to review it.
Thanks to all of the requests, I purchased this tent so that I can give you all an Agenda Free Review.
I’ve heard that there are some videos on this tent already but I’ve been told that they can’t be trusted.
That’s why TOGR exists; I’m going to give it to you all straight. The good, the bad, and I’ll show where a product excels and where it falls behind.
Does this tent look familiar in terms of design?
I would say yes! What do you say?
Agenda Free Link : outdoorvitals....
Versions : This is a Fortius 1p and 2P tent
Colors : Arctic which appears to have a green hue to it and Blue
Materials : Floor & fly - 15 D sil / PU micro-ripstop nylon, 1,500 mm HH
Mesh - 10D no-see-um nylon mesh
Zippers : YKK
Weight : 2lbs 2.5oz
Measurements Compressed : 5.5” x 7”
Measurements Setup : Measure in Video
Cost : $340
….
Features :
Taped seams
2 doors
2 person
2 interior hanging loops
Lots of guy lines
Thoughts :
Overall this looks to be a very nice tent -
Setup is fairly straight forward - if you have ever setup a trekking pole tent before, you’ll make easy work of it.
Quality looks to be very good but not great - I did find a few loose threads which is slightly disappointing especially when some very inexpensive tents have exceptional fit and finish. This is a pricey tent
Materials - with this being a 15D sil PU Nylon, I am concerned about stretching especially when it's out in the rain. It will stretch, it will sag but the question is, how bad will it be? The materials for this tent are higher end and they should be for the price
Weight : The weight for this tent is very good but something that you have to remember is that trekking poles are required for the setup - if you carry trekking poles with you when you are out backpacking, you’ll appreciate the lower weight but if you don’t carry trekking poles then the weight of this tent isn’t all that impressive.
Looks - This is an awesome looking tent - I love the blue color with the yellow accents.
Summary :
This tent looks to be a fairly close copy of the Zpacks Duplex tent - the duplex is an amazing shelter using some of the most advanced materials in the world, it’s insanely lightweight (around 1lb) and is also insanely expensive…not everyone needs or wants to spend that sort of money on a tent.
That alone makes this a very interesting tent.
I like what I see here but I would say hold off on purchasing this tent for now, at least wait for me to rain test this tent. I think it will be waterproof but I’m concerned about the stretching that is going to happen with this material. It will stretch, it will sag but how much? We will find out very soon.
Coming up I’m going to perform a rain test with this tent and I will do my best to get that up next week; rain is forecasted so make sure to subscribe

I own the one person version of this and took it out for a few days in Manistee National Park in Michigan. I can say that it held up incredibly well even in the rain. I just set up my tent before everything else and later readjust after it's had time to stretch a bit.

I have this tent and the 1p version. Took it out in rain and hail with my daughter and dog, we fit well kept dry and had a great time. Minimal condensation. I trust it and love how compact it packs in my bag. I'll be taking it across some colorado peaks In The near future. Look forward to hearing your follow-up as you get to use it.

I really like you videos and the detail that you go into. Looking forward to your "water test". I have a feeling that it will do just fine. I've used very similar trekking pole tents of SIL Nylon. Yes, they will sag when wet but I haven't found it overly problematic even without using pull outs. I usually do a couple walk arounds of the tent once set up to tighten things up. Everything is a give/take... single wall trekking pole tents tend to be lighter and fast to set up... which makes them great for thru hikers concerned about weight over the long haul.

If your headed down this path just spent the money and get the Duplex. It’s way lighter, will not stretch, does not hold water and best of all it’s made in the US. Not in some far away place by workers making next to nothing. I did not bite the bullet and purchase the Duplex and I now own two additional tents. Last fall I hiked with a couple for about 11 miles and they both loved their Duplex and they convinced me it would be the tent for me. They were spot on. Yes I know it’s expensive but cry once and never look back. If you want even lighter get their one person version, it’s about 15 oz. I own a lot of Zapck gear and it’s all been great. No more new tents for me I am set for years. I watch this channel because I love gear and Luke does a great job.I can understand if you don’t backpack much or put in big miles tents like this being fine but if you hike a lot and put in big miles get the Zpacks. Your body will thank you.

I don't see a reason to go for this when the Lanshan 2 Pro exists. Same size, weight and design. But with materials that I personally trust more and a lower price tag. The Lanshan is double silicone coated which makes it surprisingly strong for the weight, so there's no PU coating that'll degrade other than the one on the floor but at least that's an easy spot to fix down the line if needed. I've had my Lanshan 1 in some serious heavy winds that howled all night long with zero damage whatsoever. I suppose you could skip the Lanshan if you find seam sealing scary or something. But seam sealing is easy and it makes the tent even stronger than it already is.

I tried purchasing the Lanshan Pro 2 off of Aliexpress and got screwed over by the Chinese company. They sent the wrong tent (one person version) and wanted to charge me again for shipping to send the correct tent. They had me over a barrel. I would never buy from China when there was a similar option from a great USA company like Outdoor Vitals.

I love Outdoor Vitals as a company. I watched videos of the owner field testing this tent over the last year. Outdoor Vitals is a solid company that I trust even though they are a small cottage style outfit. No peice of gear is perfect, but this tent looks solid to me. If I didn't already own the Zpacks Duplex and the Lanshan Pro 2, I would definitely buy this tent.

@@Tallpagangirl I could probably agree to some extent on your definition of the term "cottage" because they don't actually sew/build their own gear, but there are many small companies that don't sew/build their own stuff, but are still listed on cottage company lists. Technically not a "cottage" company, but they live/operate in that realm.

Just wondering why if you already have the Duplex would you even consider this tent? I own the Duplex and it’s way lighter, no stretch. I don’t see anything great about this tent other than cost. To me this tent is heavy for a trekking pole tent. I don’t see them as a cottage industry company. They make all their stuff in a big factory that is making other tents for many tent companies. All of Zpacks tents, packs, quilts and sleeping bags and some of their other gear is made in Florida. They are cottage company along with others like Lite AF.
@danharrison5285
@danharrison5285 2 жыл бұрын
@@mtadams2009 I love my Duplex. It is by far the best tent that I have ever owned. The reason I would consider this tent is because I am always outfitting others when I can convince them to go out backpacking with me. I own another five 2-person tents, some free standing for desert conditions. Some people would consider this tent because it is 1/2 the price of the Duplex. As for cottage companies, we have discussed above. One of the big appeals of a cottage company is they are small and offer great customer service to be able to stay in business. Zpacks is no longer small and many customers complain they have lost the customer service they once had. I would argue that Zpacks is technically no longer a cottage company either. They are definitely not sewing tents out of a garage. They have a small factory that mass produces their gear as apposed to one or two people sewing them in the same small space. Outdoor Vitals may not be producing their own gear in this way either, but they are still a small company, that you can interact with the owner, and customer service is paramount to them.

Offset two pole design inner n outer can be erected together or separately... So good versatility. It's similar design to the X Mid ... My only slight gripe with it is vertical walls n small vestibules... That said I'm trying an easy mod to fan out the vestibules... I think this tent would be worthy of your inspection 😉 LOVE YOUR REVIEWS

I carry only one trekking pole and could see myself carrying the one man version for short trips of even in a bugout bag. Nice! Look forward to seeing how it performs in the rain! We all know that is key! I just spent 6 days camping with my litefighter 1 tent in heavy rains and it didn't leak a bit! So happy with it, such a reliable tent and being that its made for our soldiers it better be. I did carry the outdoor vitals foam sleeping pad. I put it under my inflatable etherlite xt pad and it worked great! OV makes good products. Check out their new rain jacket! Hike on!

dang, 340? I used an outdoor vitals lightweight tarp for my hammock when I kayaked the Mississippi. I loved it, no issues at all. after the trip I was looking at O.V. for other products and their prices were high, too high to justify buying. When I reached out to them on the price of a specific item and asked them to justify the price they simply told me, other similar items are priced similar to ours. If that is the only reason for a high price I will pass.

I agree and am disappointed in the change from their original business model since the beginning premise was to cut out the middleman and produce decent equipment for less. That was the entire reason they started the company. But now I see their prices matching the moderate to high-end producers and it has turned me off. That said, I'm a preferred member and pay $10 a month which just sits there building up until I decide to buy something. When this tent went on presale to members it was for $289, with free expedited shipping and I already had $250 waiting for me to spend it, so for another $42 I bought it. I haven't had a chance to even set it up yet. If I could have gotten the Dan Durston XMid I would have chosen it instead, but it sells out faster than I can grab it!

I don't understand why companies keep making ZPacks clones. There are already good copies out there for less $ than the OV iteration. Just makes me appreciate the approach Dursten took in designing his X-Mid tents. I have a 1P X-Mid and always get asked about it on trail. It's a double walled trekking pole tent that weighs 29oz and has 2 vestibules. I love it. I've converted numerous Duplex/clone owners to the X-Mid.

I have to say,I would be going for the DD Xmid 2 p every time. The tent is $40 cheaper, and the material is polyester and won’t hold water. Yes, it is 5 ounces heavier, but it is a double wall tent. I think it is a much better quality and cheaper. Most importantly Dan himself is behind the best customer service I have probably ever seen. He has answered many of my questions on many different web sites. I have asked OV the same question several times on their website over the past couple of weeks and can’t get an answer. If I can’t communicate with them before a sale, I wonder how hard it would be after. Won’t buy from them unless I see a significant change.

For the money I think this tent is very nice but there are lower priced tents that will do the job better. Going on a camping trip this October, lake front in North Carolina. I am trying a all new set up this year. On the advice of TOGR I have picked up the Teton Sports four mountain ultra at $150. Also got the Aqua Quest Defender Tarp 10x10 at $109. I can't stand in the tent so I plan to have the tarp half cover the tent high enough to have dry standing space just as I step outside the tent. So for $260 all in I will have a nice sleeping space and plenty of covered dry standing space. My old tent the Cabela's Alaska Guide six man will now become the community central hub. A bunker of a tent that will accommodate the entire group for foul weather if any comes along. I think I have all my bases covered for this trip, we will see how it goes. Obviously I am a car camper but all the camping gear I have just mentioned comes in smaller sizes more in line for backpacking.

Will be interesting to see if the lack of vents up top makes this tent worse for condensation than the lanshan you're testing (Even though that's the 1 person. The 2 person would have been a better comparison).

I love your videos and respect your honest reviews. You've got a lot of videos, and I'm sorry if you've already done one, but could you review the AMOK hammock? Is it worth the money? I backpack quite often and its a huge price tag, so I wanna make sure it's worth it before buying.

I have the Amok 5.0 UL and it is extremely comfortable and basically destroys most other hammocks out there when it comes to comfort and features. Im a side and stomach sleeper and traditional diagonal lay hammocks do not work for me at all. Hence why I went for an Amok. I don't think you can go wrong with it at all. For backpacking you'll probably want the UL version since it weighs a fair bit less than the standard version.

@@FuttFel Thank you. I actually bought the amok yesterday (after I left the post) and I can't wait to get it. I bought the UL mat and tarp but decided to go with the 5.0 hammock instead of the UL hammock. That extra 120ish dollars didn't seem worth it to save 1 pound. I hope I made the right decision. We will find out. Thanks for the help though.

I'm not real sure I'm liking the new coloring of your video(s). Your editing and post-production is always excellent, and it gives it a cinematic, arty feel, but I'm not sure it's best suited for a product review. It feels like I'm looking at you thru a scrim. JMHO, take it for what it's worth.

Outdoor Vitals makes good stuff and they actually do their own R&D in the field on company backpacking trips which I think is awesome. I think the fibers that make it ripstop factor into how much stretch there is, and I think it either has polyester or UHMWPE as the ribstop fibers so that would help tremendously. Nemo is basically doing that with their new OSMO fabrics on their premium tents. I can't wait to see your findings Luke, your reputation as an unbiased and thorough reviewer is unmatched 🤙

As soon as you said sil nylon I got skeptical. I think dyneema is a better choice for a single wall tent since it won't absorb water or stretch like the sil nylon. My buddy had the BA scout 2 and it would sag like no other even in the dry due to the single wall condensation reality. I would spend the extra money for dyneema for anything single wall and unless its semi freestanding sil nylon isn't the best to keep things setup properly.

Had this question in an earlier video where you reviewed the Moon shade. "Is the moon shade really worth it? It seems like it is kind of small, and I would think you could replicate the same (with more flexibility) using one of the tarps you have reviewed in the past, along with 2 or 3 tarp poles (Cheaper, and more flexibility)? What are you thoughts when comparing to the tarp and poles approach?"
