I'm a former mattress store manager and salesman of 20 years. I can explain some of these things. The reason you'll never see the same mattress in 2 different stores or the same mattress has different names is because of Sears. Sears wanted Sealy to make an exclusive line of mattresses just for them. Once other retailers saw that Sears had an exclusive line, they all wanted to have their own exclusive lines. Now retailers can completely customize their lineups and exclusive products are the norm. Most of the time, you don't actually see the exact same mattresses with different names, you have what they call "comparable" mattresses because there will be some differences (like how many layers of foam they have and in what order or a different cover.) Markup is generally pretty high in the mattress business. Originally, it was because most mattress salesmen work on commission (I did) and they needed to have some room for customers to haggle. Today, it's mostly just because corporations are greedy. One very typical scam is to put a mattress "on sale" by lying about the original price and then offering the actual price as a sale price. For example, one company I worked for would double the original price and then make it "buy one get one free." Don't ever pay the retail price in a mattress store. With the exception of Tempurpedic (which sets the prices at which retailers must sell their products), they have a tiered price structure. At Mattress Warehouse (in the mid-Atlantic region), they have "highline", "midline" and "lowline" prices (and our commission percentage would drop with each one, like 10% for highline, 7% for midline and 5% for lowline), and they also had what they called the "burn" price for last resort to keep customers from walking. We had to pretend to call the regional manager to get permission to sell at the burn price (and it only paid a 2% commission.) I'm kinda surprised that this video didn't cover the biggest scam in the mattress industry; the warranties. For the major brands the standard warranty is generally a 10 year non-prorated warranty. Some companies do offer longer warranties, but if you look at the fine print, it's usually non-prorated for 10 years and then heavily prorated for the duration of the warranty period. But here's the kicker; you have to also buy a water proof mattress protector because even the smallest of stains will completely void the warranty. In addition to selling mattresses, I also worked as a warranty inspector for a company called Mattress Marshalls. When you make a warranty claim, the manufacturer would send someone like me out to your home to inspect the defects. I would literally measure how deep a sag or body impression was, take photos and video and send them to the manufacturer. If I saw any stains at all, even the size of a dime, I had to report it and take pictures of it, and the claim would be denied. If I were to approve a claim and the defective mattress sent back had any stains on it, I didn't get paid for that inspection. In conclusion, I can confirm most of this video.

IKEA mattresses are such shit quality though, their prices are great, but you can never return them ever. they are all sales final items. better off with Costco, you can return it forever, even if you buy it online. The other option is one most people don't understand or think of: Goodwill, no not a used mattress, Goodwill actually does sell some goods new, and Mattresses are one of them. Each store stocks a small supply of new twin, full and queen size mattresses that are brand name and brand new in packaging. they are also all-sales-final tho, but so much cheaper than other stores.

In Germany a store owner came up with the idea of making his own after being fed up with all the bullshit of the suppliers. Called it anti cartel mattress. Instantly won in neutral tests, had the same quality as multi thousand euro premium ones for a couple hundred bucks. He was bombarded with lawsuits and even direct sabotage with foam suppliers suddenly sending dirty foam to his small new factory or dropping out of delivering directly. He still sells them. Under a different name - caused by a lawsuit filed by the very mattress cartel he fought against.

I recently had to buy a new queen size mattress. I had decided on my needs and the type of mattress and had compared several manufacturers. The best retail price from a popular local furniture store was $1,699.00 but I knew that retailer often had sales, so I waited for such an opportunity. My son-in-law was working for the warehouse of the same retailer, but I didn't want to impose on him for a "special price", so I didn't approach him. About 6 weeks later the mattress I was interested in went on sale for $1,299.00 so I was ready to make my move. My son-in-law heard about my intention and insisted that I allow him to see if he could do any better on the price. His manager advised him that they could not sell him the mattress for COST, but would try to give him a fair discount. The mattress was purchased at a price above the retailer's cost for a total of $182.00

The key is to avoid that nonsense about pillow tops and pocket coils and box spring compatibility. Private companies can and do make simply-constructed mattresses. And while private mattress makers are still in the same range of prices (because they can both get away with matching the big brands and they have bigger overhead costs because they're small), you're getting a product made specific for you.

I don’t understand what people are surprised about. There’s no scams regarding what’s inside a mattress. If you don’t understand what’s in it, you don’t have to buy it. You can educate yourself and figure out what’s inside of it, and why it is good for you. No one is making you buy something you don’t understand, that’s simply sloppy shopping. For anyone else saying they’re jacking up prices, not everyone does that. At the end of the day, it’s a business designed to make money. Just like any other store that sells you anything.

I’ve been in mattress sales since 2014 and I pride myself on being an expert in my industry. The major issue is, the majority of reps are not well versed in understanding what the technology in a mattress actually does, and the reason a bed is constructed using that technology. They are focused on purely making a sale and taking a customers money, instead of getting to understand their sleep needs and fitting them for a mattress. All mattresses have two components: Support and Pressure relief. If the support is coil it’s a coil bed. If it’s water then it’s a water bed. If it’s air it’s an air bed. If it’s foam it’s a foam bed. Etc. The purpose of the support is to keep your body aligned so your shoulder or hips don’t tip, causing your spine to fall out of alignment and forcing your muscles to to the work; leading to back pain. The other component is pressure relief, which does as it’s name suggests. It relieves you from the pressure. That pressure is the return force being exerted by the support keeping you in place. It’s Newton’s second law. The force of you going into the mattress returns upward and thusly you stop moving further into the mattress. As far as modern mattresses are concerned, ALL mattresses use memory foam in the pressure relieving portion of the mattress. Unless they are absolute entry-level $100 garbage. Better technology has made it cheaper to produce. However, like there are different grades of cloth, beef, or nearly any other material, there are different qualities of foam. These come down to the way the foams are made, and what other technologies they are blended with, such as latex or phase-change materials (pcms) like gel. This create more nuanced feels. Just as some people prefer bitter coffee, people have vastly different ideas on what a great feel is. So when fitting someone for a mattress, you need to get feedback from them about what feels goods to them, but additionally, you need to find the right pressure relief. You’ll hear terms like firm, plush, and pillow-top, but these aren’t very accurate ways of describing the mattress. A firm mattress really means that there are less layers of foam between you and the support, so you get to the hard stuff (support) faster. Stiffer foams may be used to create a denser feel, which many people subconsciously associate with firmness, and ironically support. Unfortunately for those poor souls that opt for a firm mattress for support, this is most often not the case. Again, this is highly dependent on the size of the individual, and the manner in which they sleep. A back sleeper, for example, doesn’t have much of their body actually penetrating the mattress before hitting alignment. So having less layers is not a problem. But side-sleepers (who make up by many estimates upwards of 75% of the population) run into a problem here. We are s-shaped. Our hips and shoulders jut out sever inches from our body. The degree of which varies by person. If Michael Jordan and Michael J. Fox lay in the same mattress on their side, they will have a dramatically different experience. Having wider shoulders, Mr. Jordan will require significantly more space. So when fitting for a mattress, the depth of the mattress plays a huge role. The 3rd biggest issue for sleepers is heat mitigation. As we drift into a deep sleep, our core body temperature drops. As we prepare to rise in the morning, our body starts to heat back up. When we get hot at night, it actually tricks our body into thinking it’s time to wake. Foam inherently traps heat. So they developed different ways of dealing with that. The problem arises when sale people don’t sell clean (usually because they are unskilled), and bend the truth to get a sale. When you see “sleep cool gel” in a mattress, what they’re really saying is “it ain’t hot like it USED to be.” There are very few beds in the industry that actually work to drop your core temperature, as opposed to just dispersing excess heat and keeping you temperature neutral. The reason Mattress stores have 60 different mattresses is because there is a need for it. Yes, there is a TREMENDOUS mark-up. It’s one of the last industries with margin left (thanks Amazon...). I’m sorry but you don’t go into business to make pennies. But I promise, if you come into a store and lay on a $500 bed versus a $2k bed, the difference will be VERY apparent. I hope this helps some people navigate their often confusing world of mattress shopping. And shame on bad sales people that make my job harder than it already is.

Question: I have fibromyalgia, sciatica and a severely-herniated disc in my lower back. A few years ago, I discovered that sleeping on a somewhat-deflated air bed really alleviates a lot of the pain. From what I just read in your post, that means I need a mattress with a lot of pressure relief. Air beds, no matter how well-made, fail. So, I spend a lot of money to avoid severe back pain. I also don't like throwing used beds out, not knowing whether or not they will be recycled. (Our town supposedly sifts through trash, but I'm not sure I believe that.) I've been wondering what kind of bed to get that would provide the same relief, last longer and be friendlier to the environment. Thanks in advance if you reply.

@@LadyhawksLairDotCom The best bed would be a Tempur-pedic, but the feel is highly dependent upon the frame and weight of your body, as well as whether you are a side sleeper, back sleeper, or stomach sleeper I find the Pro-Adapt soft to be a good catch-all and that 70% of customers who are looking at Tempur tend to like. Given your fibromyalgia, I would lean towards the soft feels, as you will be too sensitive for any other feel. Tempur's factories are zero-waste and recycle and re-use their materials. The thing I tell people is, you have to be aware that I cannot sell you a bed that will cure your medical ailments, but I can show you some that will provide the least amount of discomfort. You will unfortunately not be able to escape all of your pain and I'm sorry for that but that Pro-adapt soft will be a godsend. At $2099 it's a pretty penny. Most major retailer will offer interest free financing for 24 months so payments should be manageable. If that is out of your price range, check out one of the Plush Sealy Hybrids, which I believe were the consumer reports best buy for 2019. Good luck! Wish you well

I sold mattresses for 15 years - I just kinda got stuck in sales....never liked salesman. Everything he says is true. Worked for a big chain called Mattress Discounters (about 15 states) and we would sell the identical Sealy mattress as the place down the street, just with a different colored cover (called "ticking") and a different name. There are significant differences in the qualities of mattresses, however. Cheap coil mattresses, for instance, have less coils and they're made of thinner wire - so a cheap mattress will wear out a lot faster than a good mattress. And he's right about review sights - of course, that's true for all consumer products. Most review sights are bullshit put up by the companies, themselves. Capitalism has it's weak spots.

I went to a mattress shop once where the sales person was straight up honest with me. She said that MOST places actually have a 500% markup from wholesale cost. She said that their store was about 200-300%. There was another mattress store about a 1 min walk away down the strip mall and the prices totally played out like that. I was totally surprised but on hindsight shouldn't have been since 500% markup is common across many things, including clothing. I was just thinking that because they cost so much that the markup would be lower. She also said that yes, you can totally haggle for mattresses at any store. When all of the other mattress stores I went too did everything possible to hide that fact.

When I worked in this industry. It was a pain. We manufactured our own mattresses while also selling the big name brands. We also had to on our own unpaid time. Go out and do competitive shopping to know what mattresses were called compared to what we called. Also, had to watch out for shady/illegal deals or "sales". There's so much to know. It's alot to learn, understand and remember even for people like me who were in management positions. I always tried to be honest and upfront with customers but like car dealers. Furniture salesmen get a bad rep because of the few bad apples out there or the shady practices of some businesses.
@DigestedRaptor6
@DigestedRaptor6 3 жыл бұрын
Tips/knowledge for shopping 1. Know what size you want (T, TXL, FXL, Q, K, Cal K) 2. Know what comfort level you like (Soft, Medium, Firm) 3. Know your preferred sleeping position (Back, Side, Stomach, Hybrid) 4. Take pictures of mattress info (foam layers, coils *if any*, warranty, brand, etc) for comparison. You can use these pics to identify yourself or get a salesperson to help show similarities or what's the difference 5. Just because something is more expensive, doesn't necessarily mean it's a better bed. I always tried to sell people on a bed that they like while trying to save them money (why buy a bed thats $2000 when there's one that's comparable that you like for half the cost?) 6. Ask about return policy. Where i worked at, we offered 1yr but the return value varied on when you brought back and on the brand (whether money back, in store credit or the brand didn't offer anything) sometimes. Most places offer 100 days on store credit 7. Ask family and friends for recommendations on mattresses, stores and/or salespeople to ask for. (Sometimes you can get referral bonuses from certain stores. We offered free pillows for being referred and gave you a check you could cash at your bank for referring people) 8. Know the warranty (how long, what is/isn't covered, do you need a mattress pad?) 9. Don't always believe that the bed you're looking at is on "sale". Lots of stores run "sales" to trap you into buying. We had a call back service to let you know if the price was changing or if we had any upcoming deals to get you the best deal. 10. Give a new bed some time to break in. Coiled beds on average take about 3-4 weeks to break in. Memory foam beds can take 4-8weeks to break in. The floor model most likely has been on display for months which is generally long enough to break in. That's why knowing return policy is important too 11. Most stores do carry disposable sheets to test mattresses and pillows out. Ask if you are worried about germs. 12. Don't be afraid to tell the salesperson if you want space or if you'd like some assistance. Not all of us are trying to be scam artists or smooth talkers. Some of us genuinely want to help. We know how important a good bed for sleep is and if we don't do our jobs right, we lose commission, a customer and hurt our reputation. If you have any questions, concerns or would like more info. Please reach out to me via KZfaq, email or Twitter. I no longer work in sales but still enjoy helping people out with their mattress/sleep needs.

@Rowgue51
@Rowgue51 5 жыл бұрын
It is, but to be considered fraudulent the reviews have to come from an agent of a company posing as an average consumer while either doing a glowing review of their own product or totally destroying a competitors product with a negative review. There have been multiple high profile lawsuits and consent decrees for companies caught doing it. EA was hit with massive fines a few years back because they had an entire department of employees who's full time job it was to pose as unaffiliated consumers on forums/comment threads/etc and simultaneously defend everything EA put out and badmouth everything their competitors put out.

It really showed bc I delivered to at least a dozen customers that had bought from her 10-20 years beforehand and came to her again for a new one.

Can you give some advice on what an ACTUAL good mattress is like? I got several chronic illnesses making my joints and muscles very sensitive. Having a boxspring already helps a lot. But finding the wrong mattress can lead to me cramping up in the middle of the night. Because that only happens after a few hours, simply trying it out in store doesn't help me. What can I do?

@@ChibiYotsuba Consumer Reports rated mattresses recently. I chose a Casper based on their recommendations. My husband and I are thrilled with the choice. If you need to go cheaper make certain their return policies are great and that they offer like a 30 night free trial and they'll pick up the mattress if you don't want it after the trial period. I cheaped out for the spare room bed (cause Adam basically said buy a generic cause they're all made by the same companies) and they had a useless return policy so I can't return a bed that is only a little softer than a sleeping bag over a park bench!

been making mattresses since i was 12, 21 now. my boss has ran and operated his own mattress factory/store for over 33 years. started in his garage in the city where the john deere tractor was born (moline, IL). accompanied by my father who has been with him for over +20 years. safe to say i know the ins and outs of this industry. the best piece of advice i can give to people who are searching for a high quality mattress with high quality material is shop at old small mattress stores, no big box stores they’re literally all the same like this guy said in the video. we have noticed that instead of just putting cheap material in the mattresses, they’re actually taking rows out of certain springs called “pocketed coils” it’s what 99% of americans sleep on if you have a one sided pillow top. and they’re not even real pillow tops, they just have an extra seem in the border, giving the illusion of a pillow top. box springs are a thing of the past to these people, you need a box spring with ACTUAL SPRINGS. that alone will double the lifetime of your mattress. if you live anywhere near moline, IL and are struggling to find a high quality mattress, do not be shy to come check us out. we have had people from hours and hours away come see what we have to offer. the mattress industry used to make quality mattresses like us, they changed due to literally perfecting the mattress. can confidently say not one person can make a mattress that will beat ours. the prices don’t go over $5,000 either and like i said, they are the best in the world. our number one mattress comes with a COIL/COIL BOXSPRING (can be ran over by a 2 ton delivery truck and pop back up, more for the heavier set people because weight is what deteriorates a mattress) A 368 spring multiple layers of preventatives making sure your foam material doesn’t get shoved down into the coils (weight causes this) and that’s what makes those lumps in your patterns if you don’t have good preventatives *wrap size* material instead of *perimeter size* wrap size goes all the way around the border and stapled on the coil perimeter size is only to the border rod and then stapled so what happens if it’s perimeter size the material has less tension and not as good of a grip on the spring. this will cause your material to detach and then lump up inside of your mattress. and we also have very high quality foam (30 - 40 year foam) the foam is called HR foam we do not use memory foam for we experimented in 2005 and it was trash. also a double sided mattress ;) 33 years in business and the top mattress which i described has a 10 year warranty and we have never had 1 customer come back and use that warranty over all the years in operation!

I figured all this out long before this video! I researched the sh*t out of this subject in preparation to replace my old mattress! For all those people who want the best, most natural, most comfortable and longest lasting (up to 30+ years) mattress, you have to consider L A T E X ! Many companies allow you to build your own bed during the order process! A Dunlop base combined with Talalay top layer will place you in dream land for decades! Sure they aren’t as cheap as those bed-in-a-box solutions but they last about 10 times longer (Buy Once / Cry Once)!
@Levacque
@Levacque Жыл бұрын
But can it be flipped if there is a base and top layer, or is the "base" actually a core?
@Bacnow
@Bacnow Жыл бұрын
@@Levacque -well, the Dunlop layer is typically the core because of it’s natural density and firmness while the Talalay layer is usually a topper because it feels more plush! The Dunlop layer can range from 3” - 6” and the Talalay is typically less than 3”. When combined as a single unit (enclosed in a zipped mattress cover) it could be flipped but the thicker and heavier Dunlop Core would probably be less than ideal as a topper. You can, however, remove and flip each individual layer outside the mattress cover and then re-enclose them for longevity! Keep in mind that you can order each layer (Dunlop and Talalay) in any degree of firmness that suits you! I like firm mattresses so i chose 6 inches of xxfirm Dunlop core and firm Talalay topper. So…yeah…3 years later and perfect sleep nightly! I ordered the DIY mattress solution (totally customizable) from TheLatexMattressFactory.

@@rickytrevino8281 That doesn't surprise me is not much different to how tech companies and such will just ship out free product to people with KZfaq tech channels with a good following. Granted often those don't explicitly say what the review should be but there is definitely an implicit understanding that more samples are likely to follow positive reviews, which given that getting free product saves them spending hundreds of dollar of their add revenue from each video on product is a massive incentive to scratch the manufacturers back. Really needs a change in the law to correct these sorts of problems though, I am not saying making paid/sponsored reviews illegal here either merely that they should be required to mark it as a paid advertisement if they have received any sponsorship or financial incentives from the seller of the product. Then it is up to the consumer to factor that in when they decide how to weight the information presented.

Great video, mattresses always seem like such a rip off. I currently sleep on a 17 year old king size traditional mattress with box springs from one of the older traditional brands and it is still doing fine. It is ridiculous that they try to get you to buy a new one in only 8-10 years. For many of the 17 years i slept with both another person and a dog too in the bed so I figure in another couple years when I eventually move I will purchase a new mattress. However, when I look at all these online mattresses for king size beds they are like $1,500 or more for a big piece of foam with no box springs and no bed frame. However, if I look on Amazon I see plenty of cheaper king size mattresses for way less. So I think I will save $1,000 and go with an Amazon mattress when I finally decide to get a new one.

The company sees increased traffic and Jack up prices and can fill the mattress with packing peanuts or something. Why? Because now that Adam endorsed them they can get away with more because of a celebrity seal of approval. Then when crap hits the fan, Adam is liable for endorsing a company even his statements were 100% true at the time of doing so. Most of the time the only fix is a do it yourself kit and that takes time most won't offer.
