1 and 2 year deals for Johnson and Hathaway are not the problem for this team. Johnson will play limited minutes in less than half the games when guys inevitably get injured, just like Staal last year. The young players that need to play to get a look (Attard, Andrae, Jinning (maybe), Zamula (maybe)). I do not see any of those guys cracking the top 4 D of York, Sanheim, Drysdale, Seeler this year. So we’re talking about evaluating who’s going to be a 3rd pair guy. With Bonk and McDonald still developing, it may not be any of them. Johnson also provides a vet right handed D at a low cost. This gives you a lot of roster flexibility for minimal cost so that whenever one of these guys does get the call up, we have the ability to play them on the correct side of the ice for evaluation. On Hathaway, you’re getting a fourth liner with size who has shown the ability to be productive while bringing a physical component to the table. You can’t just throw small guys on the bubble like Brink and Barkey and have them go against other teams’ fourth lines without some kind of physical presence. And frankly, on both of these guys, you are getting two players with years of NHL and playoff experience who can provide some perspective and mentoring to young players coming up who are gonna have a tough few years. Both of these guys (and Bryzgalov, Ellis, Johansen, Deslauriers, Peterson, and Hayes) will all come off the cap by the time this team is ready to contend and spend money in free agency to surround Michkov (and whatever other darts they hit on with their numerous picks the next few years) in 27-28.

If Luchanko is not as good as Buium and Helenius, it will be Briere's albatross. If the team struggles in three years, people will look at this draft as his undoing.

I agree about Eric Johnson - the team is not going to be great this year, go with a younger d man to see if he has what it takes to be in the NHL.

We can spin the lack of drafting Buium as Briere didn't want to have to pay a huge contract when he becomes the next Adam Fox, so he went with the guy who will be a third line center who will command much less in salary. 🤡 Briere thinking long term...3d chess...

Are we really talking about cap space right now? That is the least of anyones concerns.. We purposefully are in cap hell so we could get assets. Cap hell will end as its been destined to end, its all a part of the plan. Management has been extremely transparent about this. I don't understand the confusion or anger...

Literally disagree with everything you both said... Hathaway contract won't matter once they are good enough to win, so who cares. Was it a little early, maybe. But again who cares Michkov obviously had to pay his way out of KHL. So he was always going to get max bonuses. Not to mention he could be a generational talent. What are we even bitching about
