What is interesting to me is that the streamers that dancers wrap around the pole form a helical shape much like the DNA molecule. This was before the shape of DNA molecule was ever discovered. During fertilization the molecule unwinds and genetic information is shared between the egg and sperm. So the symbolism is accurate as the dancers wind and unwind the streamers from the May Pole.

It comes from the Celtic tradition, this was considered the beginning of summer ( the growing season).
