While you are correct about the miter joints, I think there is a benefit to this "flaw" (which I don't believe there is). It directs the eye to the the center from all four corners which, aesthetically, is pleasing to the eye. It might be over kill for this kind of project but dovetail joints are very strong and can correct for any imperfections when the two pieces of wood come together. I like your creativity.

Mitered finger/box joints rather than dovetails are easier to cut on a bandsaw, because there's only one angled cut for the mitre joint. Box joints are just a series of interlocking straight tenons, and are easy to mark out and cut. Accuracy comes with practice. Or Mike could buy a box joint jig and used a router. Not as fast though, and investing in that might not be productive unless he's going to make a lot of box joints.

Hi Mike, Don’t be too hard on yourself! Those joints give ‘the draw of the eye’ effect perfectly, as though they were intended to be a feature. The platter bowl Looks fantastic. The chatoyant effect of that wood is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing another masterpiece ❤😊

I am so glad this maze has a video to go with it. It's the kind of piece that someone might have casually on a side table and it could go kind of unnoticed yet under closer inspection suddenly peak the interest of those that see it and ask... "how did they make that?" Maybe next time put some black veneer in the joints then if they are not so tight fitting they become a feature? Perhaps you should have clamped it a bit with a ratchet strap or just got the family to hold one each whilst the glue went off.... The resin colours didn't really show for me but I bet on inspection they are fab, you always mix it up with such wild abandon. When you get a router you could make a groove for marbles to run round the maze...or even slice it in half and add them inside and glue it back together.. As ever this was such fun!
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 27 күн бұрын
Thanks so much, I'm not sure having clamps and the whole family holding it would have helped the joints, they were just terrible lol. I did not do too good with the resin but again I learned my lesson so it will not happen again 😀

Hello Mike. This was, for me, a delightful memory from my childhood - a long time ago! My father was a a good amateur carpenter. Each Christmas he would make me a little wooden puzzle as a gift to keep me occupied while he and my mother got the celebration going. I am now wondering what happened to them all. But I still have a little box that, as a child, had a secret way of opening, which I found fascinating. Have a good week and, as always, I am looking forward to your next piece of art.

I love the concept! I watch a fair amount of turning videos and this is the first maze I've seen. I don't know if I have the patience for all the preliminary work on a project like this, great job!

Definitely a freshly unique idea. Gives me some ideas on how to use up some of my over accumulating scraps. If you give it another go, you can pour a top track layer using Colored UV resin and either routed grooves or temporary dams to color in the winning route. Also, the miter saw may give more accurate cuts than the bandsaw if you have one. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Mike, thanks for the bowl. I think sometimes that when you mix all of the different colors in the resin, you use too many and the colors get muddy and there is not enough contrast in the two different pots.

Super cool concept! For the joints, just get some clamps -- how we did our boxes in highschool woodshop class, and it worked just fine. Clamping makes the wood look like it simply grew at 90° angles. Such a great idea, and I love that you kept the piece nice and thick. Very effective!😊
