In the MCU Disney+ Secret Invasion show, Nick Fury learns of a secret invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls; Fury joins his allies, and together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity. In the second part of Agents of SHIELD Season 4, on the heels of their encounter with Ghost Rider, their strangest phenomenon yet, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. suddenly find themselves up against a myriad of new and ongoing threats: The anti-Inhuman Watchdogs are gaining political influence with Senator Nadeer, and uniting behind a mysterious benefactor - Anton Ivanov, the Superior. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to the team, Aida has kidnapped Agent May and replaced her with a Life Model Decoy. Aida's evil plans for May and the team remain a mystery.

Hey, loved the video (and all your stuff!) but I wanted to tell you about a lens you can view Secret Invasion through that you didn't touch on that might give a different perspective. To me, one of the things that the MCU Skrulls represent is the modern queer/transgender experience. Wanting to live openly in your own skin. Feeling betrayed by a government that promised safety decades ago but who ultimately wanted assimilation from the community rather than coexistence. Violent mistrust and reactionary violence. Younger members of the community wanting revolution and liberation while older members of the community who remember harder fights try and make peace and survive. Even the opening monologue of the series by Agent Prescod is exactly the sort of rhetoric that people use when talking about the "trans agenda", and the three specific countries that he mentions also happen to be three of the countries with the most pro-LGBT laws on the books, exactly the sort of thing that anti-trans activists would be afraid of happening "to a global superpower". Is it a perfect metaphor that tracks the whole way through? Not really, but only when it comes to Gravik going too far, but that's a complaint one can level in general to nearly all comic book properties. Kilmonger, Carli Morganthou, etc, people who were right and fighting for the right cause but doing so in a way that lets the heroes still be the good guys for stopping them. But outside of that, there are so many moments in the series that really resonated with me and the current climate around the world-at-large's views towards trans people. Just some food for thought, since you mentioned wanting to find more good about the show than you did, and I hope this will help. 💜

What kills me most about Secret Invasion is that they had time to set this up. It was announced before Phase 4 even started. They could have been planting seeds this whole time. What if Sharon Carter is a Skrull? What if one of the Lokis is a Skrull? What if Moon Knight is a Skrull and doesn't even know it? What if Yelena Belova is a Skrull? What if there was a Skrull episode in What If? *What if it was Agatha all along?* There were so many opportunities there and they used none of them.

I would say that a Skrull Loki, Moon Knight and Agatha would be far fetched because of their power and abilities but the other characters are fair game. Definitely seemed like they were starting to do that with the ending of FFH. Frankly, after revealing Nick and Maria as Skrulls, making Secret Invasion a single phase-long saga to bring the New Avengers together before Kang just seemed like the more obvious path to go down.

The biggest hump is to get somebody over watching that first season. There were so many episodes I thought were corny and dumb in season 1 that, once the whole twist goes down, hit *completely* different on a rewatch. Seriously, you'll notice so much rewatching season one and most of the sappy moments become actually kind of disturbing. It also made me laugh because I did think a certain character was way too willing to kill scores of people at a moment's notice, and after the twist, it's clear that was intentional.

I think the best/funniest deep cut from Agents of Shield is they realized Sousa from Peggy Carter was entirely screwed out of his well deserved happy ending by Steve Rogers showing back up in the past, and ended up pairing his character with Quake. I also wonder if, at the same time, Marvel is taking advantage of the AoS fans in a way. I recall two seeming hints that there WOULD be a tie in to AoS in Secret Invasion, as everyone was suspecting this would be the time as Daisy is important to the original storyline from the comics I believe (I haven't read them, but it's what I keep hearing). One, I forget the exact thing, if it was a "previously on" type moment, a flashback, or just dialogue, they namecheck Coulson. Why? Why would you do that? Why was it important to mention him here unless you were going to do something with it? and Two, I believe in the Disney+ App, they show things that are recommended along with the thing you're about to watch. AoS was apparently featured on there. It's just incredibly frustrating. The writing on AoS was incredible, and it's so criminally underrated, and the writers even went as far as making it easy to tie in if the MCU at large wanted to... with the way the show ends. And I think there are tons of people that say AoS isn't canon, but then those who want it to be quote Kevin saying something about how everything is canon kinda (maybe explain it via multiverse hijinks). What more then to string us along? Ugh.

@@mydavegabicycle How did they deal with the Blip in AoS?
@mydavegabicycle
@mydavegabicycle 9 ай бұрын
@@WanderTheNomad unfortunately that's sort of left up in the air. If I remember correctly, there was a reference to Thanos that wasn't "quite right", thanks to the MCU guys keeping the time jump under wraps so the writers just had no idea. It's literally a single line or two that could easily be stricken from the record 😅. However, the following season isn't clear when it starts. It could easily have been after Endgame as there are added cast members all very comfortable which show a good amount of time has passed, but none of the main cast are missing or worse for wear. The way the show ends puts some of the cast in specific places that could be easily slid into where some of the MCU has characters now without it being too weird. Also, a plot device from post-Endgame MCU is used towards the end of the series. If you are considering watching the show, just do it. Some of the best writing and one reactor I love who watches all manner of comic book media says it's the best comic book show out there. Even converted a friend who assumed it was garbage and he binged the whole series over like a week or something ridiculous :).

@@WanderTheNomad They don't deal with it at all. We know that the end of season 5 happens very shortly before the events of Infinity War, but season 6 starts off with no mention or apparent repercussions of it. It's plausible, though, that by the end of season 5, Agents of SHIELD doesn't exist in the same universe they started in. While never hinted at by the show, an argument could definitely be made that their reality branched off into one where Infinity War ended differently.

Ah, the early MCU. When they could take the most obscure comic storylines and turn them into unforgettable building blocks of a cinematic universe. When they could play off making substitutions as a strength even though it was just because they didn't have rights to all their characters. And when it felt like they'd never run out of characters and stories because they could repurpose any old detail in the comics and turn them into something recognizable. It was the limitations they had to work within that made them get creative.
@louisvictor3473
@louisvictor3473 9 ай бұрын
Early MCU was driven from the editorial side as a hail marry, having just barely starved off bankrupcy but still needing to find their next constant cash flow soon or else so a shot in the dark (well, not entirely dark, Blade, Spider-Man, the X-Men and even the first fantastic four gave did show some possible directions to take). Creatively, the company is rellying on the creators more exactly because all they have left are the franchises no one wanted to buy the rights for and some vague direction. Because things were not so shiny, the creatives who join tend to have a bit of a soft spot for the idea of superhero movies, or to be a wee bit too much in need of a breakthrough performance so they take it and try their best. Current MCU, from the management side, they want not to just keep the so far very successfull flow but also keep increasing it. Because that is the name of the capitalism game, you can't just be profitable, you need perpetual growth. Which means, they have peaked, and now they're delusionally fighting the innevitable downhill fight not with clever tactics you learn in high school level business class if you had those (i.e. you 'd have started a parallel product line a bit after your first which you hope to both surpass it and also peak by the time the first one is starting the downhill side of its product life curve, and repeat). Instead they're trying the doomed "just extend this peak into a plateau, maybe even make it go up and re-peak higher again!" route. And to make it worse, they're not as dependant (in their heads) on the passionate creatives, they've sales datas so they "understand what the public wants from our products". Meanwhile, there are other types of incentives for the creatives, such as just a fat paycheck and a lot of glamour and media buss. It is no longer a venue that sieves out lack of personal investment, and it is not like the aforementioned management would be capable of either weeding out those just materially interested or inspiring its creatives to aspire something besides glamour and the fat check. Once you put it all on the table, the math is pretty clear why A is so different from B, I say.

AoS in general really needs a reevaluation. Season 1 started weak, in particular for the twist recontextualized the entire season and made a lot of the weak elements suddenly kind of awesome. But it forever set the tone of it being a 'lesser' show, when in reality, nearly every season ended up being great. It's move to multiple mini-seasons within a season was perfect, it was like back to back loosely interconnected miniseries, one after the other, and no story had any filler in it as a result. It really upped it's game to be a top tier Marvel show.

Agents of SHIELD Season 4 is seriously one of the best seasons of TV of all time. The pod segmenting of the season was a genius stylistic choice that made sure the number of episodes enforced on a network TV show didn't cause the same pacing problems a lot of shows with episode counts so high suffer from (and which the show itself suffered from on at least one occasion, Season 1), and each arc was amazingly written besides. A truly iconic season of television that I'm sad most people probably haven't watched.

Distancing itself from Agents of Shield is one of the worst choices the MCU has made imo. This show did what Phase 4 tried to do but in a much better way. It expands the universe by introducing great new characters from season to season and giving them enough time to shine in these long and well written storylines. While i think shows like WandaVision or Falcon and the Winter Soldier work so good because they're limited, the MCU really needs one or two shows with 20+ episodes to fully flesh out it's characters and concepts. I hope they do a good job with Daredevil but that's not enough. The MCU needs an Agents of Shield type show.

Yep. It's a shame it basically got pushed out of the prime timeline, and they only started integrating stuff when the shows started sucking. Sad they never gave Quake a role in the greater MCU, too. They are always going on about wanting good female characters, while throwing one of their best away. What I think made her work so well was that she earned her place as an agent well *before* she got powers, it made an entirely different origin arc than I can recall seeing in live action before. Less "I got bit by a spider, then became a character" and more "I was a character who got bit by a spider."

Despite (or maybe because of) how silly and campy that show could get, you could tell everyone involved had a lot of fun with it, and had actual amazing comedic and dramatic acting talent involved. Truly an underrated show all because it didn't get the Disney treatment in terms of advertisement. If you haven't seen it, go watch it, please. You won't regret it.

Love that AoS got some love; it's a widely unappreciated show that did some great stuff, and had some amazing potential (I like to imagine the 5 years of the Blip with a lot of AoS stuff happening, like Mack struggling to keep things together, Daisy getting a team of empowered agents together to do a riff on the Initiative story line). A friend of mine and I say that Secret Invasion should have been Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with paranoia about who was a skrull, but instead we got Invasion USA, with one badass guy stopping a terrorist assault on innocent people.

It kind of sucks that it pretty much definitively got put in an alternate timeline after the snap didn't happen in the AoS universe, all because Marvel didn't tell the showrunners about it. It could have been the best post-snap thing. Seriously it's really crappy they told them the basic events of Infinity War but not the ending, screwing them over. That said, I think it's kind of for the best the show was it's own timeline. They wouldn't integrate any of the movie stuff and never had a cameo, and they shined brighter for it.

The Secret Invasion show reminds me of the Black Widow movie in that it reveals a problem that hadn't effected anything onscreen and got rid of it before it ended. Before this show we didn't know Fury was broken and off his game we assumed he was in precisely the place he ended the show in already. Skrull stuff has been brought forward and Super Skrull was created but aside from that we didn't get much.

It's kind of funny that I was doing another rewatch of Agents of SHIELD (I tend to do that at least once a year... it is one of those shows for me) and I was half way through season 2 when Secret Invasion began airing. Man, once I finally watched all the episodes of Secret Invasion I almost immediately jumped back to AOS and binged the remaining half of season 2 as a necessary palate cleanser. Agents of SHIELD: Marvel's good action/adventure/drama spy show that knows how to stick the landing with its commentary and finales.

Looking at the MCU Secret Invasion, the show should have been longer so the arcs you described were visible. It feels like a first draft, given Fury's amazing confrontation with Gravik turned to not be Fury, so all the criticism of him creating the mess doesn't go anywhere as he doesn't own up to it. And there is also the ending where the president orders all aliens on Earth killed, lying to everyone, saying there is a way to detect Skrulls, which results in the deaths of far more humans than it does Skrulls. I have seen some criticism that the Skrulls aren't sympathetic, and I get where those are coming from, but if the finale shows humans murdering each other on the suspicion they MIGHT be Skrulls, then the show doesn't paint a good picture of us either.

I think the "Secret Invasion" show was meant to subvert the tropes the original comic and similar stories were based on, the alien invaders coming to our world and slowly replacing us. Some people claim those types of stories are rooted in antisemitic or anti-immigration tropes. Maybe the people behind the show were aware of this, and instead of playing it straight they used the show as an allegory for immigration but from the perspective of those marginalized groups. Then again, this is a potential intention. Doesn't mean the execution worked.

Just last night I was thinking about AoS. One thing that series has and the Avengers don't is the love. Avengers are coworkers, but the agents are family. Every time they spend time appart and then reunite they are just so happy and they hug each other. And the scene at the end when they are told it's the last time they are all going to be together is so sad, because all they want is to be together forever in peace.

That was a really interesting video on both the LMD AoS arc and the In Name Only Secret Invasion. I didn't come out of the show disappointed, but I do see its shortcomings. What I mostly got out of it was humanity's infinite ability to hate and ruin things and the death of Talos's and Fury's idealism over the more cold hearted but effective Sonya's and G'iah's way for the co-existence of human and Skrull. I do see where it failed, but I'm glad there are some redeeming qualities to it -and talking about how good Agents of SHIELD was as a show is always more than welcome! Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!

@biocapsule7311
@biocapsule7311 9 ай бұрын
To be fair, LMD was always a better choice then Skrulls if you want to do something like that. I never like the concept of Secret Invasions even in the comics. Mainly because you can think of the horror of AIs replicating human emotions and expression of known people. But an army of Skrulls who are individuals themselves without the machine precision, mimic known people is quite another. The Skrulls can look like anyone but it takes more then looks to be someone else. Not to mention that if you have the capacity to mass produce and armies of Super-Skrulls, and replicate all those powers. Infiltrations is hardly an efficient tactic for invasion. AoS season 4 truly is quite the masterpiece.

Now, do MCU!Graviton vs. EMH!Graviton; there’s even an interview from around 2013-2014 with Ian Hart, who played Dr. Franklin Hall in episode 3 of AoS, where he confirmed that they’d told him he was signing on for a recurring role in Season 1 before plans changed. I think highlighting that and the way EMH did Graviton, while not as sensational as compared to the main MCU, would be fun. Maybe… just an idea I’ve wondered if you’d ever consider doing.

In hindsight, Secret Invasion as a spy thriller was probably never going to work since we pretty much already got that in Captain America: Winter Soldier. Many have torn the series to shreds but, like you mention, there are a lot of redeeming qualities and potential for what we got. I wish they'd timed it to tie in with AoS or at least looked to this season for guidence. It could have rekindled the Marvel spark with the public. For a since movie-length template, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (either the original or 70s version) is a good example of "imposter" suspense, maybe with some of the 80s The Thing sprinkled in.

Agents of shield was done so dirty. It had above average writing (most of the time) it had above average acting throughout and it changed enough up each season to stay fresh. We got magic and high tech and mutants. Honestly putting any of these characters in the new MCU movies as side characters would feel earned way more than them forcing characters who we don't even like to take centre stage in stories we're not invested in. Thunderbolts is a team up of characters most of which who never even got personalities.

I'll upvote any video that tells viewers to go watch Agents of SHIELD - only one of my favorite shows ever - but this was a concise, elegant breakdown of why Secret Invasion was, to my mind, the MCU's first total miss. But like... this was always an ill-formed notion, I've gotta say. We've already had, yes, the aforementioned AOS thing, but also they've trod this ground with the HYDRA infiltrating SHIELD mess from Winter Soldier (and continued in AOS)! I realize Secret Invasion is probably the most recognized Skrull story, and they brought this toy out with Captain Marvel and they did kind of have to find a way to play with it, but... yeah, didn't work. Side note, definitely looking forward to your thoughts on Ms. Marvel, glad to know it's in the works.
