The Meaning of Purgatory in the Catholic Church

What does purgatory mean and who goes to purgatory after they die?
Purgatory means purification. A person in purgatory is on the path towards heaven, but in need of purification to get there.
Purgatory is so often misunderstood. Here are some key clarifications:
1) A person in purgatory is going to heaven. This person will never go to hell.
"All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1030).
2) A person in purgatory died in a state of grace. Purgatory does not take away sin with mercy. It is the mercy of God that purifies the soul to make it feel worthy of the presence of God.
"The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of [hell]" (CCC, 1031).
3) Our prayers help people in purgatory. The reason we can pray for the dead is to help them get to heaven. They feel our prayers. Like an athlete who is motivated by the cheers of her crowd of supporters, so too is a person in purgatory purified by the prayers of those who love them.
"This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin." From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God" (CCC, 1032).

NO PURGATORY!! We are not unclean after we receive salvation. The fires that examine our life are for reward not for judgement. We receive salvation and then there is no longer condemnation. Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” No need for some place to finish Jesus atoning work on the cross. That’s why Jesus said, it is finished. He paid the price for our sin. Jesus didn’t say, it is almost finished, now you will have to finish your purification process through your own suffering in Purgatory. This is where you Roman Catholic teachers go wrong, you add works to salvation. And by doing so you trampled underfoot the atoning blood of Christ. And because you teach this heresy, you teach another gospel. One in which Jesus was not the complete atonement for your sin. There is only one Jesus, and he died as the propitiation for all sin, by grace from God through faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 New King James Version 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. How have you received salvation from sin if you still have to suffer in torment in someplace. How is this considered salvation? Luke 23:43 “And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” King James Version (KJV) He wasn’t baptized, He didn’t spend Time suffering in some fictional place. The Lord is no respect are of persons he would not have given this man any advantage that the rest of us don’t have. Romans 2:11 “For there is no respect of persons with God.” King James Version (KJV) You are teaching another Ghospal. Galatians 1:9 “As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Jesus nor the apostles taught anything about purgatory. You will not find it anywhere in scripture. Your explanation of purgatory as part of the fire that our life‘s go through as a test for reward. Doesn’t even fit the rest of the text. There is nothing that even says you will have to spend a certain amount of time anywhere. Before you can Enter heaven. It simply says your life is examined by the flames. And that if your life is burned up you suffer a loss. If your whole life is not burned up you receive a reward for those things that are not burned up. This does not fit the description of purgatory. Your misunderstanding of scripture is leading you astray,and you are leading others astray. Matthew 15:14 “Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” King James Version (KJV) Their is Sheol and the lake of fire. Hell is the waiting place for the dammed. The lake of fire is the eternal destination for the dammed after the Great white throne judgment. Abraham told the rich man in Hades that there was no way out. None could come to him, and non-could come from there to him. He didn’t say just wait a little longer. Wait a few thousand years. And then you’ll be able to come. Luke 16:24 “And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.” Luke 16:25 “But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.” Luke 16:26 “And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.” In the story the rich man died at the same time as Lazerous. Why was only the rich man in hades? According to Catholic teaching even a good Catholic goes to purgatory for a certain amount of time. Where was Lazarus time in purgatory in Jesus story. Did Jesus just forget to mention that🤔 You are teaching heresy and apostasy. You are part of an apostate system. Please seek the Lord, in truth before it’s too late. And you find yourself in a place that no matter how long you suffer you will never be justified. We cannot justify ourselves if we could there would’ve been no need for Jesus. We could’ve all just spent a few million years in purgatory. What is the need for God to suffer by sending his son to let us kill him for the salvation we could EARN our selves. 🤔 Psalms 49:7 “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:” Psalms 49:8 “(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)” the redemption (ceaseth forever). Christ paid the price for the souls of mankind. There is no more redemptive work. No mass, no purgatory. Hebrews 10:12 “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;” (ONE SACRIFICE FOREVER!) The man who’s life burns up and is save but as through fire. This shows that our life’s are tested. By the purifying fire of Christ. The man himself cannot burn up because the spirit that’s in him was sealed at the moment of salvation. His spirit is perfect before the Lord because he is in Christ. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” He stands before Christ, not in judgment for salvation. but for reward for the works done in his life, after salvation. As the verse says. 1 Corinthians 3:15 “If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” Because there will be nothing left after he comes through the fire of christ’s examination of his life except himself. Even the man that that built with gold and silver and precious gemstones goes through the fire of examination. But his whole life doesn’t burn up. The time he spent praying the time he spent fasting. The time he spent ministering. The times him gave of himself to others. ECT for these things he receives a reward but he also goes through the fire. The verse says that if a man’s work doesn’t burn up that means it is also tested by the fire. Please get out of that apostate religion. Or at least stop acting as a proponent of damnation. Greater will be your condemnation for every soul you lead astray! 🕊🙏🏼 seek truth here people. PLEASE!! I say these things out of love not condemnation. If I didn’t care I wouldn’t say anything. 1Corinthians 3: 13-15. 13. the work of each will be made manifest, for the day of the Lord will declare it, since the day is to be revealed in fire. The fire will assay the quality of everyone's work: 14. if his work abides which he has built thereon, he will receive reward; 15. if his work burns he will lose his reward, but himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Quote Loss his reward: he will lose the special reward of preaching but will be be saved if his conscience is otherwise clear. The teaching of this verse implies the teaching of Christian tradition on purgatory. If the venial offenses of preachers are punished on the last day, the particular judgment. Quote

@@tertertimmy9682 you add words that are not there. Words not needed to understand the text. Never the man is tried or burned or purged of anything. But for potential reward his (WORK) is examined by the fire. Both with works and without are saved as scripture states. This examination has nothing to do with some fictional place. It’s never called a place of purging nothing said about sin or even judgement. Just simply that our life as saved Christians is examined. And on the level we used our life after salvation for Christ. Accordingly we are rewarded.

There is a reason to pray for the dead, even if there isn't a purgatory. God is not limited by time and space. So if you pray for someone 20 years after they have died God would have known this beforehand.

Purgato.ry and indulge.nces are two of the greatest fundraisers of all time! It is common knowledge that the Roman Catholic doctrine of Purg.atory, and the self-atonement of indulge.nces (which Rome claimed would grant people an early release from Purg.atory, yet none of them can tell you if, and when, or who has been released), is how the popes raised the money to build St. Peter’s Basilica, and allowed the Vatican to become what is, undoubtedly the richest empire on earth. How do you think Jesus would react to this. Was his priceless blood that was shed not sufficient for Catholics unlike every other Christian? Was this why they added the extra books so they could quote Maccabees as part of the Apocrypha books when even RC themselves described them as additional books. Many argue that a lot of poverty in world could be eased if the Vatican sold their vast wealth. You have to admit that the opulence and splendour of many catholic churches not to mention the Vatican buildings is a long way from Jesus arriving on a donkey on palm Sunday. It's true heaven has wealth and streets paved with gold but I think we both know that the prosperity gospel or the accumulation of wealth too is not the mandate of the Gospel but to seek and save the lost etern.ally. Matthew 6:19-21 1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. He is like explaining his own thoughts/opinions about purgatory hahaha. Can you do it with a deep research/references? As far I've observed, or in short, Purgatory is a catholic doctrine not God's doctrine. That's why many people love doing sins because when they die, someone will pray for them. 😆 Do you think God would appreciate this type of process?

Jesus taught Purgatory. In Luke 16 when the master returns one servant is saved one is lost and two suffer varying degrees of punishment. Heaven Hell and Purgatory. If we repent but fail to sufficiently use the talents God grants us we may have to be purged before entering Heaven. Pray for deceased loved ones who may need help to reach Heaven. Blessings

@@larryluch8178 Brother , nor Abraham, David, Isaiah, Jesus, the apostles, church fathers believed or ever mentioned this non sense. This is what we call heresy. Its a misconception that shadows the fact that Christ alone, the Holy, made many also holy. Deification. We are declared pure by His purity alone. Not our work, but His merit alone. We dont do good to be saved, but be cause we were saved we can do good. Its ok to disagree with your leaders if they teach you this thing, just love them.

@@ryrosflammare1172 Jewish faith believes in Purgatory. That is why Jesus taught it in several places. Matt18v34-35 And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay the last penny. This is Purgatory. Jesus saves us , not works. But He then expects us to grow in holiness and charity and to use the talents the Holy Spirit grants us. If we are lazy or careless like the servants in Luke12 then we suffer Purgatory before entering Heaven. Catholics, Orthodox and Jews all teach this doctrine. I urge you to pray for deceased relatives and friends who may need help to reach Heaven. Ave Christus Rex.

But text without context, you know... the parable of talents by any means teaches the idea of purge bro, betterly: its in the middle of a teaching of condemnation for lazyness, and not purge for lazyness. The parables after and before, speaks of people being damned, not purged (parable of the wise and fool virgins). Brother sorry but this is just what we call Addition. You added something to these texts to sustain a whole legend which attacks the sufficient atonement once for all of Christ for us. Its like the problem in Galatians: people were teaching Christ sacrifice is good, but actually you gotta do more and give him a hand by following some precepts of works, like circumcision, to stay righteous, or holy, or properly sanctified before God. Its just a trap to, in the end, disguisely, make You the redeemer of your own soul and keep within you always a distress if you are really secure in Christ. A myth among another thousands that unfortunately invaded the church. Paul was enraged and desired that those who were foolin the Galatians to better mutilate themselves 5.12. If i see someone in the bible, pious or not pious, jewish or not, making an incorrect practice(like the guy did in 2 macc, praying for the dead), i dont build a new doctrine out of it: I reject it. Do not force verses to sustain a legend, just go back to the safety of Christ. Hes sufficient.

@@ryrosflammare1172 The parable of the rich man and Lazarus teaches Purgatory. The rich man is in a place of awful suffering but not Hell. A few reasons. He addresses Abraham respectfully as Father. He then asks help for himself but later he asks help for his relatives. He improves from selfish to selfless prayer. Souls in Hell are filled with hatred and despair, not love and hope. They show no growth in charity. The rich man is in Purgatory where he is being purged of selfishness . It is not enough to repent. That is the first step and Jesus listens. But then we must use the gifts the Holy Spirit grants us. Talk is cheap but actions speak louder than words. The great chasm cannot be crossed but in Matt18 Jesus tells us we are in the hands of the torturers until we have paid the last penny. I think Catholic, Orthodox andJewish teaching is a true interpretation of Scripture. If we do not live up to our words of repentance because of laziness or carelessness then we cannot expect to enter Heaven immediately. Before entering the presence of the King we need to scrub up a bit, so to speak. I urge you to pray for deceased relatives and friends who may need help to reach Heaven. Blessings

Respectfully, Why was Jesus' death on the cross unable to purify those who have placed their faith in Him? 1 John 1:9 states that if we confess our sins he will forgive "our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." To me "all" means just that. I shall have to trust the bible here and reject Catholic teaching. If the RCC is wrong here--and it is--how can any of its doctrines be relied upon?

@@Lotusrk123 I think there is punishment in the sense that people reflect on their sins and have remorse for them. In addition there is also the aspect of humiliation. All of the narcissistic tendencies people had which made them avoid the Christian faith will be exposed. There is a spiritual nudity in heaven that occurs. And there is a realization of one's meager status, one's spiritual condition and the environment and this causes humiliation. But I believe this is well deserved. One of the hallmarks of a sinner is a desire to humiliate others.

Hebrews 9:27 "It is appointed for man to die once and after this comes judgement. You are teaching false doctrine! It is wrong to give people false hope of being purged of their sin after death. I wish it were so but it is unbiblical. Christ died for sins once for all ,the just for the unjust in order that He might bring us to God...Joe Augustine is right in his comment

Purgatory was created to deal with the sponsors of Vatican at that time whose did not like the fact of going hell because of theirs sins. Without that mechanism most probably catholic church wouldn't have maintained until now, at least with the current influence. This is a beautiful slogan "does not matter what you do, after you death your relatives ask through the church to take you at heaven, because reaching it by your own is too hard and boring XD" . They need prayers! Pray for your passed loved ones, they can hear us when we mention their names! When we die, all of our bad actions are revisited: every bad thought, bad actions towards ourselves, other people, and living creatures (animals) will be revisited! Nothing is hidden : lies, Deceits, addictions, are known. Live a pure life to go up another level of existence! Abstain from any bad karma! And accumulate we many good Karma as you can - help as many people as you can! This will follow us on the other side!

Our time on Earth is already a purgation, people don't get this. We are here to gain merit and cleanse ourselves after sin. We are not here to enjoy ourselves per se. If we die as God's friends but have not detached ourselves from creatures or not made reparation for forgiven sins then the purgation continues after death but without the ability to gain merit or a reward for our sufferings.

Purgatory is not scriptural is not written in the Bible purgatory is man made thought about how life is after death when we have Jesus Christ our mediator who intercede for us once we are genuinely born again and forsake sin and walking in holiness and righteousness, holiness and righteousness is the standard of God for making heaven

So basically, no one goes to heaven immediately since all have sinned and we must be purified in purgatory. I wonder if the person crucified next to Jesus still went to purgatory. Another thing, no one among us is worthy to enter heaven. This is the very purpose.why Jesus came and died for our sins,.to pay for all our sins. While we are yet living, we are already judged by God. We are already condemned. No unclean person can enter heaven. So how can we enter heaven? Do our souls need the purification of purgatory? The Bible never teaches this. Here is what the Bible teaches. John 3:16 KJV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Romans 5:1-2 KJV Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 8:1 KJV There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. If a person is already in Christ, there will be no condemnation on us anymore. Teaching this unbiblical doctrine denies the sufficiency and efficacy of Christ's death.

You're just stating what the person above stated, assuming that everyone in heaven will be saved. First let me point out that purgatory is a part of heaven. It's the lowest level but a part of heaven. And no one there is saved. As a consequence they must be purified. But because of their rejection of Christ on Earth (a rejection which was not wholehearted, as there are degrees of that) they must purify themselves and earn salvation. It cannot simply be given to them. Christians (those who are born again) have been forgiven and received (and earned) the gift of eternal life and made an eternal commitment. Those who are not Christian have not.

Purgatory exist. It’s a place for spirits to be refined and purified! Our passed loved ones need our prayers- pray for them please! They can hear our prayers. This existence (Earth life) is not the only planet for souls. Those who lived a pure life and a purpose -help others, have a chance of moving UP to another plane or existence! They keep doing this until they reach Heaven/Nirvana. When we die, all of the bad actions that we’ve ever done will be revisited: bad karma, bad thoughts, addictions, etc. Nothing is hidden! Lies and deceptions will all be made known. Keep living a pure life by abstaining from Any negative thoughts and actions towards yourself and other people. Don’t eat animals ( beef, pork, chicken, etc.) Most animals have human souls…Try a vegetarian lifestyle! Keep accumulating good karma- help as many people as you can, and be a positive impact on everyone! This life is short, and the other side is very ugly. Keep your soul from being dirty and unclean.

Believeing in Purgatory is like believing what Jesus did on the cross for all of humanity wasn't enough.

Purgatory exist! Our passed loved ones need prayers, pray for them, they can hear us! When we die, everything that we had ever done with our life will be revisited: every bad thought, bad actions, towards yourself, people, and living creatures will be revisited. Nothing is hidden! Keep living a pure life: abstain from any negative actions towards you and everyone around you. Accumulate as much good karma as you can - help a lot of people, it will follow us.

Matt18 v34 and in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers until he has paid the last penny. Luke12 when the master returns one servant is saved, one is lost and the other two suffer varying degrees of punishment. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. After repentance we must grow in holiness and charity according to the grace the Holy Spirit grants us. Lazy careless Christians will be purified before entering Heaven. Jesus forgives but expects us to try to show gratitude for His free gift. Catholics, Orthodox and Jews all pray for deceased loved ones who may need help to reach Heaven. Blessings

Don’t listen to this guy, unless you enjoy being lied too. Stay in the word of God which is true and fails to mention or describe purgatory. To justify this false doctrine Rome has to run to an outside fallible source, also known as man, which Adam followed in the garden back in Genesis 3.

While all of that sounds good it doesn't pass the test of scripture. A. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23 This doesn't happen at our first sin when we turn 2 or 3 or 10. We are fallen out of the gate..i.e. womb. Every human being besides Jesus has or had this fallen nature. B. When we become a born again believer in Jesus we are right then and there a new creation; 2 Cor 5:17. Jesus takes our sin and gives us His righteousness 2 Cor 5:21. And God is the one that purifies us; Titus 2:14, and makes us able to stand in His presence blameless with great joy; Jude 24-25. C. When born again believers die we go to be with the Lord; Phil 1:23 23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; NASB Not a hint of any stop off in the big P. But what does the rcc actually teach? The ccc 1475 says you expiate your sin in purgatory. Expiation is atonement. And you can't do that, Jesus did. Atonement has always been by substitution from the garden to the cross. But the rcc says nope YOU have to atone for sins in purgatory. None of it stacks up biblically.

@@S3RAVA3LM We test all things according to scripture. 1 Thess 5:21 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; NASB If something does not stand up to the test of scripture we throw it away.

That would imply that the only people who go to heaven are those who are Christian (ie born again). But we know that heaven will be full of people who never came to Christ.

@@dgontar From a biblical perspective that simply isn' true or those in matt 7 Jesus would not have rejected. He said depart from me I NEVER knew you. Those in heaven know the shepherd. Those that don't, don't.
