In The Making

My best friend, Dan, died recently while doing what he was most passionate about - living a bold, adventurous life and impacting as many people as he could in the process. When I broke my leg celebrating his life, I decided to turn it into an opportunity to live as Dan would. I turned a crap experience into a chance to rethink and re-invent the medical cast.
It's called BoomCast, and it kicks ass. It's also completely open source.

How do you cycle air around the toes to avoid bacterial dermatitis? My surgeon barely even uses a computer, how do you intend to get this into the medical field which has traditionally been slow to adopt new technology. Most hospitals can't even go paperless. Would the scan have to be done after initial internal fixation or after internal fixation such as K-wires are removed. Could this also be used for a corrective surgery such as a left hallux valgus correction? Will the cost of a device like this be available to everyone or only those with specific health insurance, I could see this device only helping rich people rather than all people.considering how basic health care is a rare commodity in the US today.

Very cool! I'll keep an eye out for this project moving forward. It does seem like airflow would be an issue - since it's 3D printed, perhaps some kind of structural mesh architecture could be incorporated, would probably look really awesome as well. E.g. www.3dprinter.net/bespokes-scott-summit-on-the-future-of-3dprinted-limbs. Also, I hope you shared this with the Boombotix guys, I'm sure they would get a kick out of it... no pun intended.

Very creative application of IoT. But won't it still be bad for your leg to put your weight on it by walking? How does this solution solve that problem?

Chas. Cooper Actually, the movement and added blood flow from walking might actually help in the healing process. The doctor also said that the tight fit from the cast helped reduce swelling. But we don't really know, so having all the sensors can provide the data feedback we need to learn what really helps in the healing process. Good news is my leg is healed and did so quickly. cheers!
