I wrote this on another video on this subject but I'll just do a copy-pasta here because why not? I don't know why they went up to the end of Dark Tournament. 5 hours just isn't enough. I originally wrote that they should've just gone up to the end of the first Toguro fight and rescue Yukina but the more I wrote, the more I realized that even the first 25 episodes was too much. Really, things should've ended with the 4 Saint Beasts. And it's fits perfectly. We see Yusuke resurrected, we get his encounters with Gouki, showing Yusuke isn't just a good fighter but he's smart, able to think out a clever way to win against a stronger fighter (shooting Gouki in the mouth when he realized he could never get through the tough skin). We see how kind he is and willing to sacrifice with Kurama and he cares for Keiko, which we see with his fight against Hiei (and again, being clever with the mirror). The tournament with Genkai introduces us to her and it buffs him up. Then we get the gang all together, for 4 Saint Beasts. Yusuke brings along his rival Kuwabara along with Kurama and Hiei, 3 enemies now turned allies. We get to see them fight and they put it all on the line to save the city from the 4 Saint Beasts. Perfect! Yes, we don't get the favorite parts from the anime, the Toguro Brothers and Dark Tournament, but fans would much rather have it done competently than haphazardly. And saving that for S2 would be better. It gives it more time, plus rescuing Yukina is perfect for the first part of S2. We see Yusuke and Kawabara just clean up demons, showing that they're way above most normal enemies. It gives weight to the strength of the Toguro brothers.

Ok, I'm just going to say straight up that I feel the same way about the Netflix series as I do about Three Kings: there's some really great stuff, and some very low points as well. I am 100% on board that the pacing was awful. I'm on board that a lot of things were skipped out and some character development was lost (especially with Genkai). That was disappointing. But at the same time, I thought the fight scenes were probably the best I've ever seen, Keiko's more active role, the characters I love were there, the acting was solid and I could see the effort put into it. Don't clobber me for saying that, I'm coming at it from my film and theatre background. There WAS effort put into this, even if sometimes misplaced. And Kuwabara? I was most worried about his character from the images and trailers but I truly thought his characterisation was one of the best things about the series. The basics of the storyline were there, if INSANELY rushed. The things I disliked don't take away from what I did like. And I am really, REALLY tired of the mud-slinging, particularly the ones saying "the whole franchise is ruined" or "You're not a real fan if you found the slightest positive aspect in the series!" However you feel about the Netflix series is fine and perfectly valid. But the LA hasn't ruined YYH. The manga and anime are still there; they haven't vanished. I honestly found this experience decent if flawed. And I know for a fact that it has brought new fans to the franchise. That can only be a good thing. I highly recommend checking out the two excellent stage productions. Each covers one half of the spirit detective saga and is done brilliantly. As always, your analytical style is fabulous. And I'm glad you said what you did at the beginning about art being subjective. YYH is arguably my favourite anime. I didn't love the LA, but I certainly didn't hate it either. I guess I'm in the middle where I fully acknowledge the flaws and enjoy the parts that worked.

That's the thing about media criticism and discussion that people forget; there can be, and often is, a middle ground when it comes to how you feel once it's all said and done. Just because I personally didn't like something doesn't mean it's objectively terrible. It just isn't for me, which I can always acknowledge. People gotta learn to agree to disagree on certain things. Now, there ARE pieces of media that are just BAD, but everyone tends to agree on those when they happen lmao.

@@SomewherePastNever Agreed! I said on one internet review that I found it a mixed bag, and another commenter told me that I was in denial and should just say the show is 100% trash and an insult to art itself… and I said I’m not going to say I thought something was irredeemable trash when I honestly didn’t think it was. Well…you can guess how well THAT went down 😂 I guess some people don’t understand nuance? Seriously though, I’ve got a long background in theatre and film making and I’ve been a professional theatre critic for 5 years now, and I’ve seen some TERRIBLE stuff 😂 but no matter what there’s always some aspect to praise, even if it’s a single performer, the set design, or in the case of the absolute worst theatrical play I ever sat through, the lighting (and even then, I had to REALLY think about what I could honestly praise. Trust me, it was BAD!) Yes, this Netflix series could have been better. It’s not as good as One Piece but we are not in DB Evolution territory either. I’ll tell you my favourite moment while watching the LA, though. I got to Kurama vs Karasu (aka nostalgic speed run) when my mother walked in… Mum: (glances at the TV, sees Karasu) Oh look, it’s Michael Jackson. (walks out)

So many live action remakes it's getting hard to keep track of them all. Only one I actually saw was the one piece one and I hope they use that to expand on the coby side of the story rather than Luffy as we already know his side. Coby could use the development as well as hibari prince gruce and co as they are basically the marine supernovas and oda really doesn't have the time to beef them up that fast or give them all more spotlight with what's going on. The live action can do that.

"I didn't know you could own sinkholes." I'm actually really curious about this. Usually we think of owning property as owning a specific area of physical land. But if that land got sinkholed, would a person be able to sell that sinkhole? I guess it would depend on the municipality and their rules and regulations on what could be done with the hole.

one of my favorite things about yu yu hakusho that this adaptation missed was something that a lot of action anime miss now which is the 4 or 5 episodes (i forgot) that yusuke had to grow and communicate with his friends even making friends with kuwubara and kuwubara's episode not being included where he helped his friends that episode was surprising and touching showing that kuwubara isnt the punk we saw in episode 1 and there was no building with yusuke and keiko's romantic hints while yusuke is dead and isnt able to easily talk with keiko.

For the most part I’d agree with you but actually in the manga, Yusuke does ask the Forlorn Hope to take only part of each of their lives to fulfill the wish. I remember this because it was Yusuke showing more of a sense of pragmatism whereas in the anime Yusuke just offers up his own life without considering his own mother. While it seems like a stretch it seems like the writers seem to draw more from the manga- such as this bit and the photo displayed at Yusuke’s funeral. Not saying they do a good job of that either but at least there is some basis for Yusuke only offering up half of his life

In Episode 3, he figured out how to use Spirit Sword but in the following Episode, he doesn't bother to try using it even when he knows Keiko and especially Yukina would've gotten hurt by the monster that tries attacking him. What was the point of his speech abouting being a man if he's gonna be treated as powerless as the girls when in the anime, Kuwabara would've easily dealt with a monster like that from the same arc?

It is an interesting contrast between the quality of this, vs. the quality of the One Piece adaptation. It's clear that both want to condense it, but the One Piece one seems to only really want to remove some of the fluff and filler while maintaining the story, arcs, and characters as much as possible. It doesn't require you to see One Piece to enjoy the adaptation. And while I still hold that I had a blast watching the live Action YYH, if I hadn't seen the anime a dozen times half of what happened wouldn't have made sense, and in retrospect may be why I was more lenient because I wasn't even thinking about that at the time. Of course X and Y happen, because it was in the show and I know the meaning! but, others won't. So your question of "Who is this for?" Is the most important one, because I really don't know who this is for. Maybe it's for folks like me that are easily entertained, I do fall for the jingle keys. That said, I watched the anime again right after watching this and it was the perfect palette cleanser! It's not complete trash like The Death Note movie (Are we allowed to talk about that?) But it wasn't even close to the care that was put into One Piece. Love the video mate!

My biggest problem with the show was the tone. Yu Yu Hakusho was funny, bold, tense. The live adaptation was none of those things. Part of the reason Koenma was such an interesting character was because his title of second in line ruler of the spirit world was juxtaposed by him literally being a baby. It was played off for laughs sometimes sure. But by the end of the series his physical transformation was a representation of the character growth he'd experienced throughout the series. One of the best things about yyh was those dark, serious storylines being tempered by the foolish humor of a young boy playing the whole thing off for laughs with a devil may care attitude. Yusuke dies before out story even begins, why shouldn't he see every scenario he's in as a joke? All and all you laid out a great essay of the problems with the live adaptation. But man, my biggest issue is it just wasn't fun. How the writers could miss the mark that much blows my mind.

I honestly felt like it wasn't that bad, but I agree I would have just preferred to have seen the actual anime instead considering how much gets cut and changed yet trying to keep the "highlights" of the show without the proper context. For me, the worse parts were mainky the Genkai training being reduced to just a training arc, instead of at least a mini tournament where Yusuke and Kuwabara may have gotten to fight against Randou or anothwr similar antagonist, and while I don't mind that Hiei kind of changed because the Yukina backstory came probably years after he was introduced - where he kind of is just a flat villain (at least that was my perception before he joined Team Yurameshi) - I found that I didn't like that it basically meant that he lost not only his history but also that according to this series, Hiei doesn't have that transformation that he used to fight Yusuke in the anime. I was legit wondering if they were gonna just skip the Hiei vs Yusuke fight until I saw Keiko was kidnapped by the fake Hiei. I do agree: the main issue this show has is mainly the writting and cuts, because for the most part, the actors do a decent job (did take me time to get used to Yusuke, but Kuwabara for me was the highlight, even if this one was more superficial; I thought the actor did a pretty good job encapsulating a "real life" Kuwabara, even with the lack of overexaggerated expressions.

I feel like a lot of these changes from the anime was to make it more understandable for audiences that haven't seen the original show. I've never been a big fan of live action adaptions, especially anime ones. There's very few that can make sense in a real-world setting. Instead of a live action adaptation, I would've preferred a continuation of the anime series.

To me this is one of the worst adaptations. Yes, the fighting is cool but that’s it. 🤷🏾‍♂️ They should have had season 1 focus on the Saint Beast Arc.

Fucking hated this show. The action can be cool, and it can still shit on the show. The fact that this was bad and generally forgettable because of it means theres no hope of a surge in fan interest leading to additional content.

The adaptation was TRASH. SUCH WASTED POTENTIAL.

They are wrong for having a positive impression of this garbage. It's an insult to the source material. This isnt a subjective issue. It is objectively bad. And when people who dont understand what constitutes a good story and keep PRAISING BAD MEDIA, it gives them license to keep MAKING bad media and hurts the quality of the media that the generation creates. So yeah, you saying that people dont have the right to criticize other people's bad taste in media is naivete at best, and ridiculousness at worst.

With all due respect, what right do you have to dictate what constitutes “bad taste” in media? If you personally didn’t like a show, that’s fine. But the fact that other people found at least one positive aspect of it really shouldn’t get to you. Not like this.

@@AbStar_xx Whenever the collective crappy tastes of the bulk of brain dead America is causing the entire industry to go downhill as far as quality, then yeah I have every right. But lets turn this right around on you, hypocrite. What right do you have to dictate a single thing I say? Maybe you should actually practice what you preach and don't engage. But you won't. Because you're clearly a hypocrite who is doing the exact same thing they're chastising another for. Step of your high horse and sit down when grownups are speaking.

What an immature take - and that's coming from a hardcore YYH fan since childhood who doesnt have a Netflix subscription specifically because I knew they'd eff this adaptation up. What makes companies keep putting out crap is MONEY. The problem isn't whether or not people can find something they enjoyed in a piece of media while also criticizing it. That's just nuance. I would be honestly shocked to hear that you've ever tried to write or create a decent piece of art...or aren't an edgy child

@@herefortheshrimp1469 You lost any leg you had to stand on when you liked your own comment. How desperate for validation can a person be? People like you are what is contributing to this wave of trash media. Grow up.

The adaptation was good honestly especially the final act, when you sonsider the budget and the amount of episodes. If they ahd 24 episodes or even 12 to 15 i think the reimagined plot would have been able to tie up those loose holes rather well

The “palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy….” Took me out 😂😂😂😂 Great vid as always 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 its a shame that projects like this are born out of just wanting to make money instead of taking care of the IP and transmuting what was great about it into a new medium to expand its reach… That being said, it did lead to more Somewhere Past Never content which never fails to slapppp, thanks Sat 🫶🏻

Thanks for tuning in! I'm very glad you enjoyed the video; it had been in the works since December, but life REALLY got in the way. If more projects were given proper budgets and handled by teams that cared, we'd see many more successful adaptations, but there's always going to be a disconnect between fans and corporate muppets.
