I will forever be grateful for learning about Memory palaces and the Magnetic Memory Method! If I only think about the times when I flipped my flash cards over and over, exhausted and frustrated because nothing or very little of the information would stick. Horrible memories..

Dude! I'm right there with ya! It can be frustrating. The most unique aspect of this whole deal is we need to be fascinated with how the brain sees, feels, or whatever, places of location. This astounding technique is a ticket to success. I think your brain adopts these techniques too. It sure seems like it's getting easier to do this stuff. In a year you can be a whole different person.

I love languages. I'm actually a foreign language teacher. I have tried memory palace years ago. It didn't work, probably because how it was explained or how I learned it wasn't clear. Thanks for your great explanations 😊

I use mnemonics for memorizing new words in foreign language, i come up with pictures for both word and meaning then i visualize them together and store them in mind palace. It's amazing technique!!

Yes, there are at least 2000-3000 cognates and I believe 9 cognate rules that pretty much unlock a ton of Spanish. Grammar is always tricky, but for that, reading is one of the finest and most natural spaced repetition devices out there.

Hey Dr Metivier! WONDERFUL video once again. Thanks for sharing such quality content 👌🏻. I missed the premiere unfortunately. You mentioned fluency earlier in the video, but later on, the memory palace technique was put forward as the ultimate mean to acquire a large vocabulary. But as you know, there are countless people who know a humongous vocabulary in a foreign language but are not fluent in it necessarily. How would MP and MMM help in that sense?

Thanks for your post and sorry that we missed you! It is true that many people have large vocabularies but cannot speak fluently. I have that myself in some cases (though I would never use the word humungous as such). I don't see the Memory Palace as a path to fluency, but rather a supplement to the much needed memory work. Fluency involves the Big 5 at least: * Reading * Writing * Speaking * Listening * Memory Different people will require different amounts based on where they are at, their particular goals and other factors that may or may not come into play depending on the individuals in question. I've always taken great pains to point this out in my work and have never treated the Memory Palace as a magic bullet or anything like that, and all the less so for fluency. That said, fluency need not be the goal of language learning. It certainly isn't for me in some of the languages I've studied in the past, study now and will study in the future. I'm not even sure what "fluency" means, actually, and have other videos coming out on the topic soon. Thanks again and hope to see you at the next one!

Dear Dr. Metivia, I am in love with everything you say here. You have brought the world of memorization to life. I am a Neuro linguistic programmer. As such I would like to bring one thing to your attention here. Some people jump out of windows and fly across city's in their memory system. It's really quite normal. It's how they get to their outrageousness. Once the chemicals and synapsis of the brain set up their little system of getting where they are going it doesn't matter what they think. For me what might be too outrageous may be the best memory palace for them. Crazy associations are relative. I love the walk through. It is the standard. We are all different. JUST LOVE YOUR STUFF!!! Your The Best. Anthony R. Mellard CP NLP Ct Hyp. PS You have the ability to project the electricity of your brain out through the screen of my computer. It is quite astounding. Never felt this before from any presenter and I listen to a lot of video's.

Thanks for your kind words. Indeed the actions you mention can be done inside of Memory Palaces. My teaching simply asks the question: Why add actions that have to be remembered? Then it removes all of that stuff. No one is required to follow the recommendation raised by the question, but a Memory Palace is really only a location-based mnemonic if it is based on what one remembers of the Memory Palace. Adding elements that have to be remembered makes it a "Memorized Palace" and that is something for others to teach. Does this way of looking at things make sense?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM WOW!! You responded! I am following your instructions as closely as possible. You have to sit down and concentrate, take notes and make associations. So far what I can get from this is that when you use three different mental reference points it helps things to stick. I am using the Memory Palace to get all 78 tarot cards in my head. It takes the locality, the card, it's meaning and commits them to the brain. My shortcut is to place all of the seven's for instance, four of them on one card. I do this for the one through ten cards and do the memory palace routine. Wow!! This is working fabulously well!! I have a video on KZfaq. Tony Wylder: Yellow Dress. This was done at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In it I forgot the lyrics in front of a concert crowd. It all got a great laugh and applause because the audience was forgiving. I did continue. Regardless those kinds of memory lapses can kill a performance. Good memorization techniques like you teach would save all that. Again, Tony, Thanks so much!

Glad you're seeing success with these techniques. Forgetting lines and lyrics happens even to the best of the best. There's a video somewhere with Christopher Walken forgetting his lines as Captain Cook in Peter Pan and I think he recovers remarkably well, all things considered.

Anthony, thanks for a fascinating video, I'm a bit late to it. I've done a few (dozen!) memory palaces for French and Spanish words, but I haven't set aside the time for proper learning (reading, writing etc) to back up the remembered words. I'm not in any hurry, just doing it for fun. You mentioned assigning phrases in this video, and I wanted to clarify something. Do you put the whole phrase in alongside a word in a station, just as a piece of text that you almost see as an image, or do you have to construct the entire phrase as you would a single word, with "magnetic" imagery for each part of the phrase?

Thanks for checking this one out. To your question: It really depends on the language. The more familiar the language, the fewer images are needed because knowledge of grammar/logic tends to help out and is itself a kind of mnemonic. But when it’s new, typically I need an image for each word - which is absolutely no problem, thanks to the Magnetic Memory Method. 🧲

I'm more familiar with French than Spanish (despite my parents living in Spain!), so I tend to find myself completing phrases automatically for words I'm memorising in French, whereas not so much for Spanish. With that in mind, I'll probably try and learn them sequentially rather than at the same time, given the different approaches. Thanks again!

Questions are: 1-If i start to use all of my MP for language learning, how can i use it for my other Daily purposes?(Let’s say if i only have 26 MP.) 2-How many words should i put for every station?(I will do my experiment but i just want to hear from you.) Thanks for these questions. Is there a reason you would need to stop at 26 Memory Palaces? If so, then I would work at whatever is holding you back there and develop more Memory Palaces. Always be developing more Memory Palaces is part of what puts the Magnetic in the MMM. Plus, I would look long and hard at what you mean by "daily purposes." It might be that you can use some non-Memory Palace mnemonics for at least some of that. "Should" is not really in the MMM world. But as I often remind people, if you can't reliably memorize one word per station, there's no point in worrying about how many more you can add. So if there is a "should," it's one. In the beginning. Does this way of looking at things help you out?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Definitely. There is no reason to stop, you are right. I have another question by the way. Do you use a network that will never change or do you mix the palaces? What i mean is that let's say you created 26 MP. That is the first network. After that when you create the second network with 26 MP, do you always use same Memory Palaces for same network or do you mix? Thank you.

Thanks for your follow-up. New MP networks are always separate and unmixed. However, there are certain ways that they may become linked or involve what I call "Magnetic Wormholing." I probably have to come up with a better term for it. It's not quite that, nor is it quite like teleportation. It's something in-between.

I have a question about leaning english as spanish speakers. Do you use the imagery and action verbs in Spanish to associate the new vocabulary in ENglish? All this is fine if you are an english speaker and are learning new english vocabullary. You know all the adjectives and action verbs in English so the associations are easy to make.

The source language doesn't matter. It's important to remember when in doubt that these techniques come to us from languages like Greek and Spanish where the mnemonic traditions precede the development of English. You can go even further in history and find examples that precede the so-called Western tradition. Tibetan Buddhism has these techniques as do the Aborigines with their songlines in ancient Australia with not a shred of English even in existence. So there is nothing whatsoever to do with English at the core of mnemonics. Not at all.

One question: I make a palace with the words but when I wanna add the phrases, how would I do that? Would I add it in the same station or do I make another memory palace with the phrase version of it? Or do I just randomly practice the word like La puerta and randomly think, "cuando la puerta cierra, Dios nos deja abierta una ventana." Please let me know. That's the hardest part for me right now. Thanks for this question. Once you have say 10 or so words memorized you have a lot of options. I basically take it on a case by case basis. The core thing is to have worked out your own mnemonic strategy based on best possible principles and these boil down to optimizing everything for Recall Rehearsal.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM alrighty because I have about 300 words so far. :) and as for the chaos palace thing...I have a theory... maybe the statues can be in different colors so if I have specific words that I missed at the time I could make it blue and add those and then phrases in a rainbow one. Still a theory though what do you think. 🤔

Hi Anthony is it normal to take 15 minutes to encode a imagery of a simple sentence in a new language or am i taking too long? 🤦 Just can't come up with a good image at all

This usually only happens when proper training is lacking. One should never have to “come up” with images. I suggest the Magnetic Memory Method so you can train your mind to generate the best possible associations without having to do much at all - and when you’re properly trained, the associations will pop to mind within seconds.

silly question! Should i 'fill up' a single memory palace with the same letter before creating another? I am learning modern Greek & obviously I am encountering multiple new words starting with different letters - is it wise to have 20 + palaces at the same time & add single words to each as I encounter them?

Not a silly question at all. It's really important. I suggest having one Memory Palace for each letter of the alphabet in advance. Great. That's pretty easy with the Memory Palace technique. Have you searched for that on my blog? There's an article there. I'm not sure if I'll make a video for it, but possibly. I haven't done any acting for a very long time now. How long have you been acting?
