Ramon Llull is legendary for many things, but in our world of mnemonic strategies, he's especially well-known for his memory wheel strategy.
This unique memory technique has influenced many philosophers, mathematicians and memory masters, including the legendary Giordano Bruno.
Is it still worth exploring today? Yes, I believe so.
There are 4 key ways to use Memory Wheels. In this video, we'll cover them all, taking our New Art of Memory Series to yet another level.

I use music to memorize things, as strange as that sounds. I attach memories to songs, and I use that as my method. Doing this I have memorized thousands of things word for word. Only trouble is you have to sit there and hammer it out for a bit for a day or two before you fully recall it whenever you hear the song. I don't personally like the memory wheel or memory palace stuff, since I don't think in that format on any level.

Methods like this work when you have a strong technique to codify and decodify, the same happens with the other methods which is why they take significant practice. If you already have this technique from previous expertise then of course it makes sense to use it. Pretty much every working system will have a basis on linking new data to prior knowledge/data and some technique to build the linking itself. The system is as good as you're able to recall the linking and hone out the technique.

@Spiggo97
@Spiggo97 8 ай бұрын
I think most mystics in history had some profound knowledge they were teaching, mixed in with their own biased beliefs that often led to errors in how they thought their knowledge to their students. It's important to acknowledge the good they taught while calling out their flaws, as only that way can we actually work with the teachings in an intelligent fashion. So, I think lenience is being accepting of their teachings with a critical eye, harsh would be to cast everything down they ever said because of the beliefs they held. @@AnthonyMetivierMMM

An often misunderstood reality of the infamous Kabbalah is that it is not "Jewish" in origin, but rather also a collection of European, Islamic and Jewish ideas, later preserved in the parlance of the Jewish tradition. Ramon Llull is quite a unique individual. He alone created the first standard of the Catalan language, before printing. All his work comes quite late in his life, after an encounter with God. He was a sinner ( womanizer ) and was from a wealthy family that came from Catalonia. The "bipolarism" came after this encounter with God. That I am convinced he tried to do is to explain through his literature and preaching what he learned during the encounter to common people. And I believe that encounter was real, as it changed his life and drove him to work incredibly hard. He got enlightened, not crazy.

How specifically do you know that the mental behaviors came after this experience, and how specifically do you know that it was an encounter with a god and not something else?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM You can watch the youtube video "Ramon Llull: Missionary, mystic and grandfather of computer science". There you have a biography. But long story short, it is very unreasonable that given his position and lifestyle he would do such an extraordinary change and such an work towards Christianity if it wasn't because of an encouter with Jesus Christ.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM People do not suddenly change their life, mindset and risk their lifes, physical and economical safety for no good reason. Specially if they do so in a productive and constructive way, where the only "crazyness" stems from the clamis of the encounter that made them take such change. Same applies to the apostles. There is this book "The case for Christ" that is quite good describing the base of evidence for Christ from the Bible point of view. I'm a convert after 40 years of atheism. I am first and foremost skeptical and I came to realize people who meet Christ has this sudden effective, productive and constructive life change but are accused of being "crazy" just because they do so because of a claim of an encounter with Christ.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 3 күн бұрын
How specifically are you able to say this definitively about all people? I'm not accusing anyone of being crazy, for the record. But I am asking to be convinced why (or the book you cite) should be considered the arbiter of this matter. The Case for Christ is certainly an interesting and well-written book. The quality of its evidence is far from agreed upon, however. I have yet to see any good evidence at all, though I am very open to it. But the reality is that we're talking about Ramon Llull, and I will be surprised if you can meet the burden of evidence in the ways you are going about it so far. A rather more Christian attitude, it strikes me, would be much different, and that's part of the problem. There is no "one" Christianity, and few amongst its followers have anything like the myth of Christlike humility to simply admit that they do not and cannot validate their claims. Believe what you wish, but having a transformative experiment doesn't make events in the past true. And in case you're wondering, I've spoken to this issue in this TEDx about extraordinary spiritual experiences: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odykjM2V18-3oIE.html I'm not asking you to believe what I say, but if you consider it with basic human charity if "Christian" charity is on tap, I think you'll see that people do in fact change their lives and put themselves at great risk and economic safety. I do it every day and that TEDx Talk was delayed and I believe to this day is still "flagged." My work has effectively rendered me unhireable as well and whether we come to consensus or not, the evidence is fairly clear beyond my own experience that there are reasons to take risks, people do it often and there doesn't have to be an encounter with Christ behind it. There doesn't even have to be an encounter with the ineffable, as in my experience. The whole notion of being a "convert" to anything is itself suspect, and perhaps a topic for its own thread. But if you can stick to Ramon Llull and show me where in your reading of his texts there is meaningful, falsifiable evidence that any of what happened to him has any demonstrable tie to Christ, I'll be very interested in it. But it will still not be evidence for Christ in the same that my experience is not evidence for any special claim I might in the future make about my experiences. Hopefully I will remain in the current state of entertaining various ideas while maintaining basic skepticism and still enjoying the endless and wonderful dialectic and debate the Internet allows. And I hope more people will do the same over time and enjoy discussing these issues in good "faith." Thank you for your correspondence.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Here are a few examples. The first step is to see differently, and apply a little well-known Geometry, An Equilateral Triangle to systems of measurement. When you tessellate or tile the plane with Equilateral Triangles, you actually see that there are always a "Square" number of Total triangles in the field. Another way to understand this is to say, "The Successive Summation of ODD numbers, ALWAYS adds to a Square number. 1+3 = 4 = 2^2 or 1+3+5 = 9 = 3^2, and so on. The first 4 ODD numbers, when we add them together 1+3+5+7 = 4^2 = 16.... and on and on. The next step is to realize that ENERGY itself is a Shape, and that shape is an Equilateral Triangle. You can arrange and find patterns as they relate to the 1d, 2d, ad 3D forces, with Unidirectional Time being represented as a circle. That circle represents a Time measurement of Energy. So we draw Equilateral Triangles, with circumscribed circles to visually connect up Geometry as a Natural Expression of Energy to the Mathematics that we humans invent. This is a powerful Mnemonic device that allows me to carry all of Physics in my back pocket. Want more examples, check out the work of Arthur M. Young with his "Geomety of Meaning" and work on "The Reflexive Universe, Also Wayne Robers and his Scale Structure theory, or my favorite, the Study of TETRYONICS by Kelvin Abraham, who mentors me and others about the Equilateral Geomety of Energy itself. So difficult to use words, but when you start to draw the physical associations, you can see and easily memorize almost all the equations regarding Velocity, Acceleration, Linear Momentum, Total Energy, Frequency, Planck' Constant, Fermat's difference of two squares, Rydberg's Formula and so much more. All are described flawlessly using Circles with Equilateral Energy inscribed within the time-bound measurement of Energy, which equals mass... You can find much more on this type of work, and I'm extending it and connecting it with the work of Athanasius Kircher, who also identified the notion that "Triangles are Squares..." back in the 1600s. We've simply used actual squares, where if we really want to understand nature, Energy, and the Geometric nature of reality, we must use Equilateral Energy, Energy Tessellated to Tile the Plane...
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 10 ай бұрын
Many thanks for expanding in such depth. I can't comment on how exactly I would approach memorizing these matters sight unseen. But with that caveat in mind, if the information is encoded in letters, numbers and by extension words, symbols and equations, all one needs is a few personalized memory systems. For graphs, charts, diagrams, etc. there are a few additional considerations, but they are not beyond anyone who develops the initial set of memory tools.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Yes, You would get much more out of the visual images. Geometry is king, Math is okay, English Sucks. There's a memory device called the Lukasa that clued me into the memory palace idea yeas ago. And seeing the way Arthur M Young created his system of remembering, and seeing those connect up with similar styles, it has really helped me to carry physics in my back pocket. I invite you to simply Google Tetryonics to see the Heirogliphic style images and how they isolate patterns and you can apply the quick math to whatever system you are take a snap shot of. I sort news, politics and history in a ranked wheel internally where I categorize everything mentally by the source and context and plausibility The effect is I have a model of world history in my brain that covers almost all of human history including multiple versions of disputed events organized by a sort of abrogation The main effect is that It lets me dynamically adjust my understanding of history in a way that is never wrong or incomplete, just maintained in various degrees of resolution depending on my level of expertise and that understanding is able to be continually revised because everything new I learn is placed in the context of what I know

Some memory techniques suggest this and that can be an interpretation of the Memory Wheel. But it's possible to construct a Memory Wheel based entirely on things you already know, and it would be a stretch to say that an adult would have to remember what a wheel is in order to mentally place pre-known objects in a circular formation.

I used to have a method like the memory palace but I used compartmentalized drawers like one might find in a library. When I needed to remember something these compartments would roll through my mind's eye like an infinitely large Rolodex, stopping at the compartment that held the needed memory. If I needed to load something into my memory I would roll the Rolodex to the corresponding subject and alphabetical compartment, I would then pull out a card and write in long hand the information I needed to remember and deposit it into the drawer. It was a wonderful mental construct, but here's the thing, after a slew of physical, emotional, and spiritual traumas I lost access to my mental construct. I can see the oaken face of my mental compartment with the little brass frame that flares out from a pull, but the area inside the frame that should be filled with a mental projection of a white piece of card stock upon which ethereal ink scrawled out an alphabetical reference is now a hollow black hole of unpiercable nothing. The shelves don't rattle, fold, or rotate, the drawers don't open, and my magical floating quill no longer leaves a glistening trail of looping script upon moonlight silver cardstock. It's just the one box, sitting in infinite empty, all is dark but the shiny worn spot on the brazen pull that casts a little light onto the face of the little wood box, exposing the striations in the wood that was once an oak tree.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I started practicing self exploration at a young age, I was probably six when I started constructing my "inner castle," so it's hard to pinpoint when I started that particular technique. As I grew so did my internal practice, I'm sure that I picked things up along the way from people in my circle, mystics tend to run with mystics in my experience, but it wasn't until my twenties that these practices began to receive names. I decided to train Jiu-Jitsu when I was twenty-seven and I was introduced to a wonderful community of people that were open to the ideas and concepts, and in many cases practitioners. It was a training partner that encouraged me to cut the "silver chord" and cross the perceived void at the edges of my awareness. This was what ultimately lead to the traumas, that to me hold great archetypal symbolism and allowed me to question the unquestionable, leading to the ecstasies and long dark night the mystics wrote about. After seven years of what I describe as an existential crisis I came out on the other side. It may seem silly but I think that some of the things I held dear as a child were my teachers. My inner castle was modeled after greyskull in He-Man and I learned contemplation on a skateboard, I learned "secret" stories of the struggle between light and dark from the neck of my guitar, and I learned how to really listen in the tops of oak trees and the cycles of life by observing annuals and perennials. So I guess a cartoon, some toys, and the earth were my teachers. Studies of interest were language, philosophy, religion, and physics, but I didn't delve into these until after my fall. I do remember that before I hung myself (by my leg) I had a great sense of urgency to be sure that my mental compartments were organized, so I was going through all of them, organizing my thoughts and knowledge, when I closed the last drawer I saw the full picture of everything I had accumulated at that point. Then the entire construct folded into itself until it was a floating dot, like a singularity centered in the circle and disappeared. Not long after I slipped on an ice patch in the top of a tree and was hung by my right foot. When I came to, it was different. I was different? There was change. It was beautiful, it still is I think. Before the fall I would say that beauty lies in impermanence, I still think that's true. Now when I need to remember there's the one drawer, filled with impermeable darkness, and I stare into that darkness until something escapes, sometimes it's the information I was waiting for, others it just remembering that I'm blessed to walk this path with the people that sometimes walk it with me. Thanks for reading and replying, it's nice to know that there's an actual human on the other end of the comment.

I have a question regarding learning languages that are not phonetic, take French for example, in this case should you use mnemonics to memorize how words are pronounced and later learn how to write or do you learn to pronounce and write at the same time because I find it difficult to make two sperate mnemonics for the same word, what do you recommend?
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 10 ай бұрын
What do you mean when you say that French is not phonetic? I personally try to make sure my mnemonics cover both sound and meaning at the same time. It's not always possible, and in these cases, it's just a matter or taking a second path.
@Angelina-vp1dr
@Angelina-vp1dr 10 ай бұрын
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Thank you for taking your time to answer. What I mean by a non-phonetic language is a language that is pronounced differently from how it's written. For example the word beaucoup is pronounced boh-koo with a silent p. That's why I say French is a non-phonetic language because the pronunciation of this word does not directly correspond to its spelling.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM
@AnthonyMetivierMMM 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for expanding. Certainly one can use terms like this in private use, but I would not say French is non-phonetic on this accord. In fact, we could just as easily call it hyper-phonetic in this regard. If you look into consonant initials and finals, you will quickly see why I suggest this alternative possibility. In all things, memory techniques aren't particularly hindered by these matters. It's just a matter of making sure that you learn how to use them effectively so you can move into efficiency. I didn't cover the memory wheels for language learning in this particular video, but from what I've seen so far, they are still there, but have been transported more to linear tables. This shift possibly comes from the influence of Petrus Ramus, but Im not yet entirely sure. Much more research needs to be done.

I was a bit confused by the characterization of Averoes as somewhere between Aristotle and Atheism. As a devoted Muslim, his positions were definitively theistic. Or am I missing something?

Llull was a Christian apologist. Averroism can mean different things, but in one of the major senses, it leans towards atheism. To mimic nature would suggest that we are somehow divided from it. I'm not sure that we are, nor that our mimicry of many things has nearly as much to do with us as it has to do with evolutionary forces stemming from what we call "nature." The seduction is to think that the fact we call things by names is somehow a sign of our division from nature, but leaving marks in space is hardly unique to us, even if our ways of territorializing space with sounds and symbols appears more "advanced."
