I think the main reason for victims to stay with the abuser..because abusers keep severing the victims' "self-esteem" like you are nothing, no one wants/loves/cares you except me so you have to be grateful, I'm the only one that you need/depend on me..thus why, the victims keep staying in a abusive relationship and believes that the abuser will change. If you want them to leave the abusive relationship, you need to rebuild their lost self-esteem which is going to be hard. Because with all the blaming ,gaslighting, worthlessness and living in fear and nothingness makes them scare not only to defend themselves but also to step to the world to ask for help.

The first step in an abusive relationship is cutting the victim off from their friends and family. The abuser is highly jealous of any time the victim spends with others who care about the victim. To the victim. this jealousy is explained as how much the abuser "loves" the victim and doesn't want them to spend time with anyone but him. Next icomes emotional abuse -- how stupid, crazy, ugly, fat, etc the victim is. Only the abuser could love her. Next is the gaslighting and physical abuse. So the first thing to watch out for is possessiveness. Anyone who wants to cut you off from your family and friends is probably an abuser. Get out!

The guys tried to make it funny but gaslighting is a serious issue that sometimes can't be realized by those who are in the relationship. I also think that word is being loosely used around like it should be normal. But at least it's being addressed and talked about.

Ok take a step back!!!! This guy is simplifying gaslighting! He’s making ordinary relationship encounters seem like gaslighting! These guys have the wrong idea!! They are going to question every action of other people going forward!

The main reason a victim stays is because they get so used to that treatment they can't break away. It's very important not to fall into it to be able to protect oneself. My sisters and I were raised by a strong woman, indepent, and confronting anyone trying to do what will not accept. We are that way plus mom spoiled us. We were girls that got what we wanted, we had discipline but we were pampered. My older sister is the one that is the most arguementative. Yet, already in her late 30s she met a man that was dominant and abusive and she began to be submisive to that abuse. If the person can't see it and leave as fast as possible they become like stuck in quick sand. We never got along so we didn't communicate but some how at that particular time I went active in her life and found out that was happening to her. I made her realize and leave immediately. She did but he went after her and convinced her he would change. She went back but in 30 days saw he lied and left. But men and women that do not ever see it or are in deep in the relationship become mentally trapped and fearful. In the U.S. we've had along time of this abuse being discused and public service notifications on t.v.
