ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT VEDANTA NY
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

This just one of the best message I have ever heard about the real deep teaching of Buddha and spirituality as a whole. Both Swami Atmapriyananda and Sarvapriyananda are two spiritual giants that the tradition founded by Ramakrishna Paramahansa have given to humanity. Those who criticize this lecture don’t understand that this man is not talking from a book, a sutra are any scholar or religious tradition. This man has become one with the Buddha and is talking to us from that place.

Beautifully stated! I just wrote a comment, not as well written as yours, that he seemed to be inhabiting the Buddha. Mindful Kayaker, we are spiritual siblings! As for criticisms of this talk, thank you for the head's up because I won't entertain them although dying of curiosity as to what could possibly be criticized here:). Namaste to you, fellow traveller!

@Mindful kayaker : I don't understand what you mean by : This man has become one with the Buddha? 🤔 I think that would be quite problematic, if his Vedanta or Vaidika view is informed by Sankaracharya's or Kumarilabhatta's stance, because in sankaradigvijaya, an authoratitive text of Advaita Vedantin (check the sringeri math) sarga 1 sloka 93-95, what Buddha taught is a wrong teaching, So, according to Kumarilabhatta (which sankara endorse later) even Buddhist women and children should be killed and not spared. So, I doubt if he would prefer to become one with a Heretic, the Buddha. 🙏

@@isvara5325 what are you -- the spoilsport who takes things too literally or the nerd who thinks it's all about the words in the texts? Relax. Maybe don't take things quite so literally. I don't think Vedanta and Buddha are at war, okay? You're picking your side and "defending" it. What side is that-- the sarga 1 sloka 93-95? The world is a lot bigger than that and so is your mind. Never take man at his word because words are only symbols, they are crude stand-ins for what is. It's all one baby AND Tat Tvam Asi!

STUNNING! Not to be missed! The absolute best talk on Buddhism I have ever heard! Not only that, one entire full and complete half of Krishnamurti's message for mankind -- if only he could have stated it with the warmth and humor Swami Atmapriyananda interprets it for us. Swami Atmapriyananda is a genius, a jhani, a humorist, a philosopher, a scientist, and as he so generously described the Buddha, he too makes one feel as though he could hold all the sorrow of the whole of humankind in the bottomless depth of his own busom and thereby reflect for us our own capacity to do so for ourselves. I will treasure this talk and listen to it again and again.

@The Future And what is your proof of this total nonsense about what the Buddha taught? your own personal ideas? These sutras and suttas are the records of what the Buddha taught and that they work is proven by enlightened Masters from generation to generation to date . So all you have is your own personal opinion about the Buddha that you're spewing out her as proof? The Buddha clearly said in the Mahaprinabbana Sutta that he left his teaching as a guide to what he taught and now you and your Swamis 2600 years later with virtually no contact with these Sutras et al are claiming you know what the Buddha ACTUALLY taught while the Buddhists do not? WOW!!! Amazing irrationality. Thank you again for your reply 😂.- A copy of exactly an older Swami Vivekananda said a 100 years ago .

@The Future And how do you know this? Have you studied Buddhism under a genuine lineage master? Or have you even bothered to investigate it a little, instead of swallowing whole the distortions of Hindu teachers, like the swami-ji here? If you had you'd know that the sutras are the words of the Buddha himself and that they are filled with "hardcore philosophy". It's best to educate oneself on a subject before one criticizes another's knowledge of the same.

4) Around 40 to 40.5 minutes, he spells out his deep faith - he says “human beings have been endowed by the god with such extraordinary capacity to viveka which is discrimination” ! If he ever understood Buddhism, he would have realized that the faculty of discrimination is an inbuilt caitasika within us, and that there is no necessity of a God anywhere bestowing us with the capacity of viveka. 5) Around 47.50 onwards, he quotes another Swamiji, who allegedly said, “The Buddha’s teaching would have remained purely psychological if he hadn’t taught about karma and punar-janma. It is the genius of the Buddha that he conceived a religion without ātman or soul and god. Can you imagine a religion without ātman and god? God or soul is the pillars of the religions and it is intellectual genius of the Buddha was that he founded a religion without god and soul but accepting reincarnation and karma. If he hadn’t accepted them, then this wouldn’t be a religion at all…..if there is not ātman, who is reborn? Buddha comes up with this extraordinary theory, developed later on by the philosophers like Nāgārjuna,….who is rated even higher than Samkara. Samkara mostly from Nāgārjuna, using all his dialectics and polemics, and removing his śūnya and replacing it with pūrṇa or ātman/brahman, that is all!” This already tells a lot what Swami-ji has in his mind. Swamiji has no idea about Buddhist “śūnyatā”. Everything he said within this segment of video is wrong. Briefly, for the Buddha, śūnyatā is the exact opposite of ātman/brāhman. Furthermore, God and Soul are something only imagined, and they never existed to even talk about. Therefore, it is not the case that the Buddha tried to invent a religion or a spiritual tradition without them. Since they don’t exist, he simply stated the fact. 6) His nirukti (etymological meaning) of the term pratītya-samutpāda (dependent-origination) is outright wrong from Buddhist prospective. Neither Buddhaghosa, nor Vasubandhu, or any other famous Bhāṣyakāra-s in India ever gave this definition of pratitya-samutpāda. He says “utpāda is origination, samutpāda, well origination, prati+ītya dependent on just the previous moment? Totally and utterly wrong explanation of pratitya-samutpāda, based on his own fancy and whim. Here is the nirukti of the term by Vasubandhu in the Abhidharmakośa, Chapter 3. He says: “atha pratītyasamutpādaḥ kaḥ padārthaḥ | pratiḥ prāptyartha etir gatyarthaḥ | upasargavaśena dhātvarthapariṇāmāt prāpyeti yo 'rthaḥ so 'rthaḥ pratītyeti | padiḥ sattārthaḥ samutpūrvaḥ prādurbhāvārthaḥ | tena pratyayaṃ prāpya samudbhavaḥ pratītyasamutpādaḥ |” (English translation: So (atha), what is the meaning of the word pratītyasamutpāda? "Prati" means obtainment ("prāpti) ; eti means "going" (gati). The meaning which is obtained through the change of the meaning of the dhātu by the upasarga, is the meaning of "pratītya". The root "pad" means existence; being (sattā) preceded by the samut it means emergence (prādurbhava). By that, having obtained the conditions that which arises is pratītyasamutpāda.” (C/o Maxim Vorosilov). And by bringing on the Marchov Chain to explain dependent origination, he further shows his ignorance. The next mind obviously depends on the previous but the chain of dependent origination, all 12 links, are linked together. Therefore, there are three models of dependent origination, some are linear and others pre-envision non-linear. And he also misses the point about dependent origination - there is no “arising” in Buddhism with only one cause; there has to have two causes at least. Furthermore, if Swamiji had ever understood the 12 links of dependent origination, he wouldn’t bring the concept of God at all. Since the truth of dependent-arising negates the concept of God, the Buddha said in the Pitā Sutta in SN thus, “anamattagoyam bhikkhave sansāro pubbā koṭi na paññāyati avijjā-nivaraṇānam sattānam taṇhā-samyojanānam sandhavatam samsaratam”. What the Buddha meant was that there is no beginning and end of this samsara and sentient beings continue in the samsara, covered by avidhyā and bound by desire. These 12 limbs run and operate at every movement. 7) It is absurd that he compares the definition of Buddhist avidhyā with Christian and Vedānta. I don’t know how it is possible at all. In Buddhism, avidhyā simply means the wrong understanding or failing to understand the relationship between causes and result, Four-Noble Truth, as well as three jewels i.e. Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

@@MrHynotiQ nothing personal.. Mukti or liberation is an important issue and such misinterpretation blocks all possibilities to liberation. Furthermore, why do you think such refutation (not criticism) is negativity? Would you say the same to Einstein who refuted Newton's Law? Isn't it the same, that if we don't get scientific theories right, the possibilities to understand the reality correctly is blocked? But you don't tell Einstein that his refutstion is criticism and negativity. You are conditioned to think thst there shouldn't be precision in religious views. That is wrong. This also means you are not familiar with Indian spiritual context. Furthermore, he is blatently making mistakes and misinforming people about Buddhism. People have right to know the truth.

not at all.avidya in Buddhism also in Vedanta mean towards the same way. approaching in different ways. and secondly, sunyata and brahman conception are absolutely the same if you understand sunyata well you can understand that emptiness literally does not mean nothing its cant be described in words beyond intellect and the same was told in Upanishads about brahman. sunyata means the self-independent -existence everything in-universe is sunya.that means it depends on something else and this theory was developed by Nagarjuna not buddha and in Buddhism sunyata is considered absolute thing (especially in Madhyamika school)what buddha taught is within time and space and what Vedanta teaches beyond time and space. and leave the spiritual fact .look scientific theory science always says that which has starting always has to end .so that samsara or you can say the universe does have an ending. because the universe is in time and space dimension..and buddha was kept silent on god.thats absolutely right because that realization is beyond word and he rejects the idea of a creator god.means he didn't personify god what Upanishad also teaches. what god is refers is only pure awareness nothing else.buddha never denies the existence of god(pure awareness)rather always he told: "buddha lives with unrestricted awareness".and without 5 aggregates he realized there is an unrestricted never-ending awareness .illuminate all around .same teaching of Upanishads.and sometimes when he was asked what you are he replied "I am awareness".nowhere Buddha said there is no god. Buddhism is not atheism. Buddhism is agnostic .once someone asked for buddha "did you find anything to prove the existence of God"? he replied "did you find anything to disprove the existence of God?" that's buddha .he believed god more than ours because he reached the ultimate truth. if buddha is enlightened (definitely ) he has to come to that conclusion what prophet Muhammad, Jesus Christ,Guru Nanak, st paul, st john, Ramakrishna Vivekananda and many enlightened monks ended up with this conclusion because ultimate truth is one cant be twice and they shared same experiences what is taught in Upanishads and Swami Vivekananda said "unfortunately his followers didn't understand buddha" because buddha is one and his followers were many. and seems you are confused because you are trying to get enlightened through youtube.do not get confused you will never get unlightened until and unless you can realize yourself.that's why buddha always said"atmodipa bhabo"tell me one verse where buddha said there is no god(not as creator).buddha was agnostic not an atheist.but now a days buddhist made it athesim.if you are follower of buddha well and good .first realize what is sunyata get enlightened first after that discuss because knowing of ultimate truth cant be helpful from him who never experiences it always gathered knowledge from book.you are making same mistake what in buddhas age so called bramhan used to do.not realizing anything only blabbering

8) He equates pratitya-samutpāda with present day mindfulness and defines it as if “remaining in the present” is all about it, giving the example of J. Krishnamurti. What? It is so wrong in every respect. 9) He further says: “Memory gives the pain. So, don’t keep any memory. What? He seems to have no clue that one of the main jñāna (knowledge) of the Buddha that liberated him was pūrvanivāsānu-smṛti-jñāna i.e the knowledge of all his past lives, his name, clan name, and so forth. 10) He brings the idea of jñātā, jñeya and jñāna from Samkhara’s work. He says, “unfortunately the Buddha eliminated outward god, the inner atman and ….look at the boldness of this man, Swami Vivekānanda said he is the boldest of all men! It takes tremendous courage not to cling on to anything.” He doesn’t seem to understand at all that these things depend on one another to exist and do not exist at all in the final analysis. If he had understood this point, he wouldn’t be wearing that weird cap, a ideosyncracy of Ādi Samkharācārya by coping Buddhist monkhood. And further he says with amazing number of ignorance, “jñeya is eliminated, jñātā is eliminated and what remains is jñāna. This shows the level of his ignorance regarding Buddha Dharma. Where can be jñāna without jñātā and jñeya, since one depends on other to exist? Without those two, what can be called jñāna? So for him, this is the choiceless awareness, a blunder by Krishnamurti. This is the mindfulness for him, remaining moment to moment in that jñāna. He doesn’t seem to know that he has already fallen into Vedāntic dṛṣṭa with another name, which he calls here jñāna. He further says “The awareness remains unfocused and choiceless, remains as a vast ocean of infinite wisdom…this is the technique called Zen (hahahahahahahahahaha)” This is what Buddhism would like to call a vegetative state or a state of an animal with no discriminative mind at all. This is something Buddhist would avoid at all cost. He says further with an amazing amount of ignorance, “Jñāna becomes jhyāna, and that jhyāna becomes Zen (hahahahahahahaha). The Japanese Zen is derived from Chan, which in turn was a phonetical rendition of Dhyāna. Swamiji doesn’t even know a very basic Buddhist history, let along its complex meditative and theoretical position. I wonder why these Hindu swamis make themselves a laughing stock by talking about a tradition that they have the least information about.

Only one thing that everybody who watch this video should know, there is no any Maharaj or Swami in this earth can expound the true messages (teachings) of Buddha unless he contemplates his teachings with its disciplines, vows and following the lineage. to know about buddha that does not mean you have to become Buddhist.its not mandatory. if you would like to learn from Buddhists who are basically ignorant(most of them in the modern era, not enlightened at all) your effort will be futile.that's why after the demise of buddha Buddhism got obsolete from its birthplace India.(teaching of buddha is absolutely right no question in that.) because this core philosophy was not new in India and when they tried to wrench absolute truth they became moribund in Indiapioneer was Adi Sankara who firmly challenged the wrong understanding of an ignorant Buddhist. and logically defeated them. great philosophy but mostly misunderstood like Islam.not any core difference with Upanishads.

@@saswatabiswas190 It is not mandatory to be strictly Buddhist per se but it is important to learn Buddhism from an authentic Buddhist masters to get the accurate meaning of Buddha's teachings. Buddhists hold 2500 years of unbroken lineage of ordination (upasampadaa), scholasticism (aagama) and realization (adhigama). One needs to get connected with these lineages to be an authentic Buddhist. So, what you said above is not true. Adi Sankhara never properly refuted Buddhist view. You can read his bhasya to understand it. He and many Hindu pundits actually erected a straw man and beat it for thousands of years now in India. They created their own idea of Buddhism and wrote against it. You seem to be doing exactly the same. Adi Sankhara actually used the army of a Kerala king to kill Buddhists, wipte out Buddhism, and usurped Buddhist site. I don't think that is a very glorious story. You can read Sankhara Vijaya and Sankhara Digvijaya to get to know what he actually did. Buddhist accounts show that he was defeated three times by Buddhist masters in debate. Actually it looks like Buddhists are telling the truth because when we look at his so called refutation, he hasn't properly understood Buddhist idea of sunyataa. Tibet is the place where it all just happened to come together. Swamiji is making the same old Vedāntic mistake in this video- he is interpreting Buddhism from Gaudapāda’s Vedāntic system. It looks like there aren’t any Swamis, Yogis or Mahātmās in India who could understand the teaching of Gautama Buddha truly and sincerely; they always try to look Buddhism from the lens of Hindu philosophy, which then brings a disastrous result - they themselves never understand Buddhism properly and also mislead the general mass with their wrong interpretation. If Swamiji had ever understood Buddha Dharma properly, if he had ever learned Buddhism from a proper Buddhist master, he wouldn’t be making so many mistakes. So far for the segment I watched, he has made following mistakes. 1) He talks about Buddha being an avatāra, and compares the Buddha with Rāmakrishna in being able to relate with the misery of the entire humanity. This already shows how little he knows about the Buddha, his career, qualities and so forth. He doesn’t seem to understand at all that he is comparing a speck of dust with the universe itself. Furthermore, a Buddha is never an avatāra; a Buddha is an entirely different category of being, not found within this universe. The Buddha says it clearly in the Dona Sutta, by rejecting to be identified as a God/god, human, or any other category of non-human beings. 2) When Swamiji explains the suffering (Dukkha), he offers three types of sufferings attested in Hindu scriptures i.e ādi bhautika, ādi-daivika and so forth. Technically speaking, these sufferings do not go beyond dukkha-dukkhatā, or at most vipariṇāma-dukkha (suffering due to change). We can clearly see that he has no discernment at all of the law of dependent origination, especially the samskāra-dukkha, which is the reason for both other types of Dukkha-s. Unless that Dukkha is understood with its causes and how to break it, there is no end of the suffering. 3) While giving the explanation of the reason for the dukkha, Swamiji chooses to give the definition from the Mahābhārata and brings the term “samkalpa” (which he defines as volition, will, thinking, I have to do this, I shouldn’t do this, the capacity of the human mind to will and so forth) for the reason of clinging. And he further says, “When samkalpa stops, the mind also stops”! This definition comes from Gaudapāda’s work in which Gaudapāda says, “ātmasatyānubodhena, na samkalpayate yadā | amanastāṁ tadā yāti, grāhyābhāve tadagraham || Literal translation would be: By realizing the truth of ātman, when one doesn’t wish/desire [for an external object], then one realizes the state of no-mind; in the absence of the object to be grasped, that [mind] is non-grasping. This is definitely not something that the Buddha taught. Furthermore, technically speaking from Buddhist point of view, his definition of samkalpa either comes under “cetanā” one of the universal caitasika or the right-resolve/thought (samyak-samkalpa) in the noble eight-fold path, and that caitasika has nothing to do with stopping of the mind. In fact, the entire concept of ‘stopping of the mind’ is not found in Buddha Dharma. What he taught was that there is no ātman type of eternal entity, and whatever manifests is due to dependent-arising, which means ‘existence’ always has a relative existence for Buddhists. Hence, we can see that he consistently describes Buddhism from Vedic/Vedāntic/Hindu point of view.

Thank you Bibek ji for this much needed clarification. While Swamis wanting to share Buddha's message is very admirable, it is very unfortunate that they lack the sincerity and humility to learn the Buddha's teachings from an authentic Buddhist lineage and choose to explain his realization and teachings to their whim presenting nothing but their own misguided opinions to the listeners. What a huge disservice to someone who is genuinely seeking Buddha's teachings and they instead get served this porridge quoted as 'Buddha's message'! Maybe Swamis need to start understanding that presenting Buddha's message to the audience on a global platform requires a lot more than such mediocre homework. Their curriculum of past Hindu Swamis' work is neither adequate nor appropriate to interpret Buddha's words as all of them have only given their distorted ideas without any study of Buddha's teaching, mixing them up with different hindu philosophies.

@TheDharc You don't even seem to know the basics of Buddhist history. Buddhism was well preserved in Srilanka since 2300 years; Tibet since 1300 years; China since 2000 years. Of course, Buddhism was still alive in India until 13th century. Since it was transmitted to China, Srilanka, Tibet, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Burma, they kept the living tradition alive, which means they not only preserved the words of the Buddha but also the tradition of meditation he taught, the unbroken tradition since the time of the Buddha. Hinduism is a separate system from Buddhism. The Buddha criticized Vedic/Brahmanical/Hindu teaching saying that their scripture do not contain the truth to liberate someone from this world. It is for this reason that Hindu/Brahmanical/Vedic schools categorized Buddhism as "naastika", something outside their own system. You don't even seem to know such simple fact. As an Indian, you should know at least the basics of a religion, which was a native school. Buddha dwelled among our ancestors.

@TheDharc With due respect, what is meant by "mostly chinese-japanese" Buddhism? No matter what form of Buddhism we consider (Mahayana in China/Japan, Vajrayana in Tibet/Bhutan/Nepal or Shrawakyana in Sri Lanka, Myanmar etc.) all of them include the practice of Samatha and Vipasyana, following the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. The teachers from Tibet/China came to the Indian subcontinent to study under many Indian Buddhist masters, and that's how they learned Buddhism and took it back home. And Chinese great Masters like I Tsing Huen Tsang, Fa Yen came to study in Nepal and India. Also, teachers/masters from the Indian subcontinent went to Tibet/China to teach and help establish Buddhism there. For instance, masters like Amogh Vajra from Nepal and Bodhiruci went to China. So with due respect your argument that Buddhism has been "chinese/japanese" is incorrect. Buddhism has adapted to different cultures, yes, but it has not changed the core (the right view/enlightenment/vipashyana). Authentic teachers of Buddhism -- validated by their own masters who belonged to an unbroken and enlightened Buddhist lineage dating all the way back to the Buddha himself -- still exist in various countries. And they are certainly more credible and authentic sources to explain the Buddha's teachings than someone who has not studied under authentic Buddhist masters belonging to an unbroken enlightened lineage, even if the person is in India. Also, you seemed to imply that in India the Buddha Dharma has been lost for more than a 1000 years (since you say it's been mostly Chinese/Japanese for that long)? If that's so, how can you say for certain someone in India can teach the Dharma accurately, since it's been lost for more than 1000 years?. It's also not exactly true that it's been lost for more than 1000 years, by the way. It's less than that, but still a long period of time. Bhawatu Sarva Mangalam.

All the questions you have asked so far can be asked to you too. Do you realize that? However, many of the commentators here are quite knolwledgable and know what they are writing. In short, you seem to completely not know that Buddhism has 2500 years of living uninterrupted lineage. They have perfectly preserved what the Buddha taught in Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan. By gettting connected to these lineages and reading these texts along with commentaries would accurately tell us what the Buddha taught. I myself am trained to read Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese Buddhist texts. Apart from that, we also read other Indian Darsana, for example, Vedanta and we know what Sankara taught. You seem to even not know that the basic training in Sankara Vedanta starts to reading these texts and reflecting on it. The correct knowledge is obtained in three stages: Sravana (hearing or reading), manana (reflecting) and nidhidhyasana. Even in Sankara Vedanta, enlightenment is a process, that you go through several stages. So, your idea that one has to be enlightened to get the basic idea of Vedanta is quite non-sense. Anyway, you don't know these things because like that Swami you are also talking non-sense and gibberish without even knowing the basics of Science, Vedanta and Buddhism. There are a lot of crucial errors which distort the historical facts of Buddha & Buddhism. Such errors deliberate or otherwise tend to portray Buddhism a branch of or subservient to Hinduism, which is absolutely NOT. This truth would be crystal clear if one considers the following truths contained in Theravada Buddhism's original scripts. They were compiled by Buddha's core 500 discples & reviewed to ensure against any distortion every 100 years since then till today. 1. Buddha had emphatically denied that he was either an all powerful Creator - God or an avatar of anyone else but only an enlightened man. He had denied the very concept of reincarnation. 2. Buddha accepted the existence of lesser gods & devas only to the extent that they were born so due to good Karma. They were again bound to be reborn as lesser beings in the never ending cycle of life and death once they died & ceased to be god/deva. 3. Buddha was totally opposed to artificial caste structure based on birth. He explained that all beings were made of same essence & born, through the same biological process. 4. For the above reason only He liked his community of followers to that of an ocean whose taste was only salty universally without any differentiation. 5. Buddhism is totally opposed to Hinduism in all respects but one. That is Karma. Other than Karma both Buddhism & Hinduism are poles apart in every other aspect. 6. Unlike Hinduism, Buddhism doesn't believe in a Creator - god. 7. Hinduism believes in rituals to undo one's bad Karma while Buddha repudiated all rituals & enjoined his followers to do good to others to attain gain good Karma in their life. 8. Hinduism believes in avatar, reincarnation of soul etc...Buddha vehemently denied both. He described himself as an Enlightened man (Buddha). 9.He clarified that he was not the first or last Buddha. His successor Buddha word be Maitreya Buddha. 10. He was the teacher of gods & devas. He taught gods of his knowledge obtained through his enlightenment, at their request after his enlightenment spanning 7 weeks. 11. Buddha denied emphatically & demonstrated that there was nothing like a permanent soul in a being. 12. He emphasized that there was only an ever changing character of a being which had been reborn (after death) in another body. 13. Buddha's exact last words were ... " Be a light unto yourself without depending on outside agency & attain your salvation." It is crystal clear that Buddha's total focus was only on man & man only. He enjoined his followers to not rely upon outside agency ( God etc...).

This Swami and a host of others, including the famous Vivekananda ( his grand Guru ) have always distorted Buddhism to suit their own muddled up conceptions of the Buddha and Buddhism. It is evident that starting from the Sankaracharya himself( Sarirak Bhasya ) to this Swami has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to The Buddha and Buddhism. They are all doing a great disservice to Buddhism and some so-called Western Sawamis just follow suit blindly. When will these Hindu Swamis just talk about their own system for which some of them may be qualified and stop talking bull shit about a system for which they are utterly not qualified? Will they ever? or is it part of their self-glorification at the expense of those who are not present to defend themselves for the last 800 years in the Indian Subcontinent?

@Nirjhar Das I am intrigued by your statement. Since, when did the historical Gautama Buddha become an ‘Avatara’ of the Hindus? It is baseless to say the Buddha was an avatar of Vishnu or any Hindu God, for a number of reasons: 1.Firstly, the term ‘avatar’ which means to incarnate or descend, doesn’t hold any ground in Buddhist philosophy. The Hindu concept of ‘avatar’ is based on rebirth of an unchanging atman(self). Whereas, the ground (bhumi), path (marga) and result (phala) of the Buddhist path is based on the doctrine of pratityasamudpada (interdependent arising), as taught by the historical Gautama Buddha himself. According to this view, all conditioned phenomena appear due to causes (hetu) and conditions(prataya) so there’s nothing that is eternally permanent and unchanging ‘Self/Atman’ that takes rebirth. The mental continuum which is a flux of dependent causes and conditions ‘re-becomes’ according to one’s karmic volition. So, the term ‘avatar’ is neither used philosophically, nor fits into the Buddhist paradigm. 2.Now, when the view itself is different, how can it produce a Buddha who is a Vishnu Avatar? If you claim that for the Hindu’s Buddha is an avatar of Vishnu regardless of whether the Buddhist believe it or not, and it is the arrogance of Buddhists not to accept this fact. Give me a valid reason why Buddhists should accept it when such things are not mentioned anywhere in Buddhist canons? Why should Buddhists believe the words of Hindu Swamis who neither have knowledge of Buddhism, nor any experience of Buddhist meditation practices? 3.Your statement contradicts your own view. Because you’re implying the Vishnu Avatar Buddha is propounding a philosophy that is radically different from the Vedanta or Hindu view? Secondly, if you present a counter-argument, that according to Vishnu Purana/ Kalki Purana that Vishnu Avatar Buddha appeared in a deceiving form as Gautama Buddha to especially tame Demi Gods (Asuras) who want to learn Veda and attain liberation, as well as tame the sinful ones at the end of Kali-yuga. Then, don’t you think Vishnu’s intention is flawed, because: a. all those who now follow Buddhism are influenced by ‘deceptive view’, hence the prospect of enlightenment for these ‘deceived Buddhists who follow the deceitful Vishnu Avatar Buddha’ is zero. So, I don’t understand what is the purpose of such a Vishnu Avatar Buddha? Where is Vishnu’s compassion? b.Secondly, I don’t understand why Vishnu has a problem with the Demi Gods learning the Veda and attaining liberation? Isn't that a good thing? Why does he have to appear in a deceitful form as the Buddha to divert them from attaining liberation when it could free them from cyclical existence. The Buddha is an epitome of compassion and his teachings encompass beings of all existence. Whereas, Vishnu’s intention again is questionable here if he primarily intended to divert the Asuras away from liberation, which contradicts Gautama Buddha’s teachings. 4.The Buddha himself when asked by the Brahman Drona, confirmed he was not an avatar, but should be called the Buddha (buddhé ti mām dhārahi). I needn’t elaborate this point as @mijin kurum has mentioned it already. 5.Puranas were written around 350-400 CE. Whereas, the historical Buddha’s words were recorded by his disciples, who were enlightened, immediately after the Buddha’s parinirvana at the first council, and written within 500 years. So, there’s no need for a Hindu Purana to justify who the Buddha was when Buddhist canons were already recorded, had spread and was practiced all over the world. 6.I don’t understand why Atmapriyananda Swamiji and other Swamis like him want to preach Buddhism. It’s easy to hide behind words like ‘Buddha taught love, kindness, peace and harmony’. But, so did Mother Teressa, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and present day new age teachers. Buddhist philosophy is much more profound and the concept of love, kindness, peace, harmony and compassion have a deeper philosophical base than just the idea of “love thy neighbour”. 5.Why do Hindu Swamis always want to link Buddhism to Hindu ideas when their philosophical crux is as distinct as chalk is from cheese? Isn’t that a sign of insecurity that you can’t hold your own ground and hence want to adopt a philosophical stance that is more acceptable and universal in the way it is being adopted around the globe. 6.My humble suggestion is, please read the Buddhist canons properly before making baseless comments. Buddha’s teachings are still available in its trueness. Great Buddhist Masters and Lineage holders are still alive. So, there is no need for a Hindu Swami to suddenly crop up and twist and turn the Buddha’s words, or try and ‘rectify’ or ‘justify’ its meaning. The tripitakas speak for themselves. Once you start digging the depths of Buddhist philosophy, you will realise it’s a bottomless pit. It’s not worth preaching a subject you’re not qualified to speak about. If you really want to learn about Buddhism, then please seek a proper Buddhist Master of an unbroken enlightened lineage. This is not Buddhist arrogance. In fact, it’s a compassionate plea to the likes of you to stop confusing people with false information, making a fool of yourselves and others behaving like authorities on a subject matter beyond your scope and knowledge.

One should be extremely careful when it comes to speaking about the true messages of the Buddha, if it isn't one's field of expertise or one haven't studied buddhism properly. We don't need someone from religious background to promote the messages of the Buddha. We have more than enough reliable sources of the great Indian masters like Nagarjuna's numerous translated texts well preserved.

Your wrong. HInduism/Vedanta, Buddhism is not just belief or religion, they are also practicle. some of principles among both of them are common and are common sense and practicle. some are beliefs in both of them for example karma and rebirth are common which makes them religious. so if you say buddha's teaching is not religion then you are wrong. because buddha believe in karma and rebirth. so stop uttering nonsese. i respect both swamis and buddhas equally. stop your hate and realise that it is originating from ego/anatta/ahankara/anataman/false self.

Losing an item on a train in a dream is not a real problem. A balloon bursting is not a real problem. Child cancer is a real problem. Famine is a real problem. How can it be expected of children, who have not had years and decades to cultivate mindfulness, to understand the philosophy of the "No-Self"? How can we expect those dying of famine to remain mindful, rather than identifying with the body? This solution of dissolving the problems by dissolving the ego, is only accessible to the well-fed and to those educated in philosophy. This helps the tiniest fraction alleviate suffering. For real alleviation of suffering, science needs to be done and medicine needs to be developed. Pretending that you are God, or pretending that you don't exist, are not real solutions to real problems. If you see a child dying of cancer, do not tell him that it is okay because he is actually God. Do not tell him that he is okay because he doesn't actually exist. Use your adult intellect to develop medicine to cure him, because he actually exists and actually is not God. These delusional Eastern philosophies are morally reprehensible. Just tell the starving kid that he deserves it because of karma he accumulated in a past life; that ought to make him feel better. Such shameful philosophy.

I have similar doubts about the Buddha's method - it only works for a selected few smart enough to change his perspective to such an extent that his problem are not his. How can that stop world issues like child cancer, famine, and animal suffering which is independent of human inteference?
