I wonder if Idun and her apples are part of the reason why we associate apples with the fruit in the Garden of Eden in Judeo-Christian tradition. I'm pretty sure the fruit that Adam and Eve indulge in are never specifically described as apples in the Bible, but they are most commonly portrayed as such in artwork and other media. Idun does sound similar to Eden after all.

I was wondering that too!! Cuz Norse poets and even Snorri had to censor sum stuff so the norse mythology could pass the Christian censorship since ya know, Christians envading lands and culture that time. There were a lot of information that we may have lost about The Norse Mythology without the censorship:(

the parallel of the apples giving life is used symbolically in a lot of things still, usually portrayed as special in some way like a golden apple. In Minecraft a golden apple is used to give extra life points (hearts). In the Chronicles of Narnia the very first book The Magician's Nephew shows the creation of Narnia by Aslan. Aslan gives the nephew a golden or shiny (can't remember if it was really golden or just "bright") apple for his sick mother in his own world, as a reward for braveness and selflessness. The apple cures his mother's sickness and he plants the seeds, which grow a large tree but with just normal apples. But later the tree dies in a storm and not wanting to let it go, the now adult nephew builds a wardrobe from the wood. That would become the wardrobe that leads back to Narnia in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Also it's like the most exciting book int he series so Idk why they always skip it in the film adaptations.

As far as I know apples are not native to Europe, and particularly not native to Scandinavia (Kazakhstan is the homeland of apples). So either Idun has been a goddess since the Indo-European migrations into Europe, or the apple was adopted as a vehicle for immortality sometime after the migrations. Either way, apples are pretty cool.

The word originally used could be translated to most fruits and some nuts the fruit could literally have been oranges or dates but the translation ultimately went with apple, maybe just to decide how ordinary the fruits could be.

Vikings and Norse traders went everywhere, even India. A dried/pickled apple could have been an exotic threat they knew existed, but was so rare to them, it was clearly food for gods. Though it's possible it was a Berry of some sort. Nordic Europe has the biggest natural sweet tasting berries in the world, because golf stream makes a warmer summer, and Northern summers have no real nights, so sunlight keeps berries growing... Though they would've been used to those berries, so it probably didn't seem special... I'm going with dried apples theory.

Idun’s erasure bothered me most because if it weren’t for her, there would be no gods. they’d be mortals. any women of power or significance are known to be diminished or completely erased, specifically by christian monks who didn’t understand the fact women were important to these beliefs/religions.

The rest of the story of the kidnapping of Idunn is also how they got the Goddess of Hunting and Skiing Skadi. Basically said giant eagle was her father and she wasn’t happy with the fact that the Aesir killed him so she went Asgard with the goal of killing the gods, them not wanting to die asked if there was anything they could do. She said make me laugh and Loki stepped forward, tied a string around his testicles and the other end on a goats tail and scared the goat causing it to jerk away and tug on his family jewels, he jumped into the air with a loud yelp and the Giantess immediately started to laugh. After they offered her a place amongst then
