The concept of a woman's love transforming a beast into a handsome man is an almost universal story because it's a metaphor for how women, marriage and families were seen as the main catalysts for young uncouth teens to become mature responsible adults.

Yeah I'm more curious about the symbology at the time that was undoubtedly woven into the story, especially the folk bits like a wilting rose. Or if any of it was based on people at the time, (not like incest was uncommon in French royalty...).

Fuck Valentine's Day. If you have someone you love, you should show it every day just by showing you care, and I've done that in every relationship I've ever been in, but I'm still treated like garbage and rejected. I've been called damaged goods so many times. I'll say it again: Fuck Valentine's Day.

Set in 1987 in New York, she's an assistant district attorney & he's a lion-man who lives in abandoned tunnels under the subways with a caring society of outcast people. This story is actually the opposite of Bluebeard and its related myths! BnB: "Don't be afraid to marry a rich ugly man, he might be really sweet, and financially stable!" vs Bluebeard: "Don't just marry a man for his wealth and looks, he could be a serial killer!"

Because I'm disabled, I've always been treated like a beast for what I am on the outside. Sometimes it's the beautiful people on the outside who are the real monsters on the inside. Also, some of us beasts can't turn into handsome princes. I have severe Tourettes Syndrome and OCD as well as Degenerative Disc Disease that causes in my spine as well as problems with both hips and shoulders that cause additional pain, so I walk with a cane even though I'm only 31 and have been walking with a cane since my early 20s. My hair is prematurely greying as well so I've been told I look ten years older than I am. I'm in good shape otherwise because I work out five days a week despite the pain and I'm 6ft. 3in. tall and broad shouldered, so I don't think of myself as horribly ugly, but being disabled is all it takes for people to treat me like garbage, especially by women I've been in relationships with as well as being rejected and toyed with and/or lead on and used. I'm too disabled to follow my dreams and I can't work a regular job. I sell antique coins to make money and I have savings as well as a fully paid off house, but being a loving person and a good partner apparently isn't good enough. I don't expect sympathy or anything, I just needed to vent and share how much I hate my life because of how lonely I am and how empty my life feels due to not being able to follow my dreams and all I want now is to have someone to love and be loved by, and how depressingly hard it is to find someone who can love me in return. I live in an area where I have only one friend because of how hateful and judgmental people are on top of it being a small town and due to his busy schedule we almost never get to hang out and I feel isolated. Sorry for the pity party here, I just needed to share all of this before bottling it up became too much to bear. Whenever I try to talk to someone about it they tell me to just shut up or to deal with it or to not mope and moan, so I feel like there's no one and nowhere for me to say all of this to. Valentine's Day is that specific holiday that brings all of this even more to the surface for me because I've had some bad Valentine's Days in the past and have been alone for many of them as well. Anyway, if anyone does read this, sorry again for all the complaining, and...thank you.
@Artretha
@Artretha 5 ай бұрын
Damn, I'm so sorry people are so shitty to you about those issues. It sounds like you live near my hometown because people near where I live are hateful and judgemental, as well. And, unfortunately, when I was struggling with severe mental health issues, and thus, disabled, people treated me like shit because I couldn't work. I've learned how to manage my mental health issues in the years since, but that's what it's been like for me. It can't even begin to imagine how difficult it is for you because there's nothing that can be done for those issues, from my understanding. My heart goes out to you, and I hope you find someone who loves you.

I (27 F) married a disabled man (30 M). Although he needs my whole attention and we won’t have the life I once dreamed of when I was a teenager, he is the best husband I could have ever imagined. And truly, after living with him and knowing about his family and so… The thing is it’s hard for people to look into the eyes of someone whose suffering is MUCH MUCH MUCH greater than the one they will ever feel. I live with a permanent broken heart, I only want to see him really happy. So people get upset with him. I did too, until I realised he was not acting, it was indeed true. I thought, literally “or either he is the most selfish man on earth or he is really suffering”. It’s hard for people (I include myself) to realise and care about disabilities that you can not see. Maybe it would be easier if he was in a wheelchair, you know? So, only to tell you, have hope, it will arrive some day. 😊 I hope this helps! Don’t give up and own your disabilities! You need a loving wife/husband with lots of patience, did your past partners have patience? You need someone capable of loving, we believe you truly love when you have suffered, could they love you unconditionally? Don’t settle for less! That’s what I am telling you! You only need to find 1 person. This world how much people does it have? I don’t know but only one person that loves you, you will find!! I am telling you this because I know what it feels like because of my husbands past and some of his friends in this situation. Just imagine when he came back to his SMALL hometown married, showing me off to people who didn’t think he would ever get nothing good (he thinks I am very pretty 😂). After almost two years with him I learnt a lot, I hope this helps: 1. Sadly, wearing nice clothes helps. He had to dress to impress so no one would even think about messing with him. He seemed a gangster (which I hated but it really prevented they laugh at him). And that’s a thing he discovered, when I fell in love with him he only wore sports clothing and I had to get used to the new style. 2. A little love and caring makes a long way. It means, I realised that even if I don’t know nothing about health only if I tryed he was better. No arguing, massages, eating healthy (we are trying the Glucose Godess method, check it out), quitting smoking… vitamin supplements which I read in a scientific journal it was good for someone who took his kind of medication… I know it’s hard when you are so sad, but try to treat yourself with love and respect. Treat yourself also! Go to places you love, speak up to people who tell you bad things! I hope I gave you hope, really 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

@@mikami42 This is the kindest and most thoughtful message I've ever read. Thank you for this. My past partners would just drop me when things got tough and never put in the effort I did into our relationship. Luckily I do take care of myself and stay in good shape, especially since the leaner I am the less it should affect my back as I age, or so I'm told anyway. I'm 6ft. 3in. tall and only weigh 200 pounds (I'm shooting for 190 and average weight for someone my height I'm told is 220.) so I'm pretty fit and I keep a healthy diet. I dress as nicely as my condition will allow because the Tourettes Syndrome side of me makes wearing anything not baggy impossible due to the irritation fabric touching my skin causes me, but I usually have sort of a paramilitary look going on. Unfortunately, I'm accustomed to having been assaulted over the years and I've trained in martial arts for at least a decade now, so I've gotten good at looking over my shoulder and watching my own back. Anyway, thank you again for your uplifting message and for caring enough to send it. I wish you and your husband both all the best in all aspects of your lives together.

King's Quest 6 has a scene clearly inspired by this story, where Alexander goes to an island named The Isle of The Beast and is confronted by another prince, who's been turned into a beast by an evil witch. The only cure for his curse is for a fair maiden to willingly come to his island and live with him. In addition to that, the curse will also transform Alexander into a beastly servant of his, in a few hours (15 minutes in game time), unless it's broken. Luckily, Alexander is able to find a maiden named Beauty (gee, who'd have thunk?) who becomes so touched by the story of the beast, that she decides to go and help him. (I should probably also point out that Beauty is enslaved by an unkind stepmother in this story, much like Cinderella, so she's pretty much doing herself a favor as well.) The curse is broken and the prince turns back into a human, Beauty becomes his bride, and just before the prince escorts her to her new home, he gives Alexander a token - his magic mirror, which is enchanted to show the truth. Alexander can later use this mirror to either remind the Lord of the Dead of who he used to be, or unmask the evil vizier's genie masquerading as the princess, depending on whether the player goes for the good ending or the bad ending. Another couple of fun facts to point out: 1. Alexander is voiced by Robby Benson, who voiced the prince in the Disney adaptation of the movie 2. Like the beast, Alexander's family have a magic mirror of their own, that foretells the future and gives them helpful visions throughout the series

My favorite part was the battle with the enchanted objects and the villagers. I like the animated version because it’s the one I grew up with. I also like the live action version because they made the parts more specific.

Lunar New Year is tomorrow; we'll be going into the Year of the Dragon, or the Year of the Naga in Thailand. It might be fun to see you go into creatures of the Chinese Zodiac, and their surprising cultural variants. The individual stories of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and the reason why they are what they are and where they are on the wheel are pretty wild; honorable shoutout to the Rabbit's personal story (we are currently in the Year of the Rabbit), for not even being part of beginnings of some of the events but still literally crossing the finish line to become part of the wheel anyway. If you want to know what that was all about, go and look into those stories about each of the individual animals in the zodiac I mentioned earlier.

In the song “Make My Son the King Someday” in Pantless Knight’s Shrek 2 Musical when the Fairy Godmother talks about Prince Charming’s 12 brothers, one of them is the Beast. This means that that version of the Beast is born to a King and a wicked Fairy (the Fairy Godmother), so that version of the Beast and the Villeaneuve version of Beauty would find common ground.

Belle in the Disney movie has a few more differences from her literary counterpart than just being an only child. Beauty in the original is kind, beautiful, gentle, graceful and every inch a proper lady. Yes, she’s educated (a great number of women were at that time) but, like most wealthy women at the time, more emphasis was placed on her musical, domestic and social skills. She’s also a bit bland by modern standards. Disney’s Belle on the other hand is still a kindhearted and caring woman but she’s also opinionated and stubborn. She refuses to let Gaston and later the Beast boss her around. In fact, she only starts falling for the Beast when he makes genuine efforts to change and shows that there’s more to him than just being a selfish and temperamental monster.

@24:11, this story about Fairies reminds me of Iolanthe, an operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan. would you do some videos on the plays or a video about Iolanthe? There are books with the scripts.

The first part of your video, reminds me of a 2014 version of Beauty and the Beast. At the beginning of the 2014 version, Belle has a storybook, getting to tell a story to her two children. As Belle is telling a story to her two children, we see three sailing ships getting caught in a nasty storm. Belle's father is a merchant, with 3 sons and 3 daughters. They lost everything, and were forced to move to the countryside. One of the merchant's sons is a gambler and is in debt too. I don't wanna give away the whole movie, but you should check it out.

In the Disney live action remake, I wish that they somehow made the enchantress pay for her curse, because she not only wrecked many families because of them working at the prince's palace, but she also expected too much from a kid, as she not only arrived at the palace in the middle of the night, but she also pretty much demanded to be fed and taken care of, instead of just asking if she could at least stay the night, and then because the prince said no most likely because of stranger danger and stuff, while in the Disney movie they just made it that it was because he was looking down on the woman, and called her ugly and a bunch of stuff, but even if that had been the case, she was in no position to demand things from him, and not only that if she did not like the prince's treatment and wanted to still curse him, she had no reason to involve all of the palace's servants, because most of them were just innocent servants, that most likely didn't even get to meet her in order to treat her badly, because I could understand if she had cursed the butler or maids or whatever had they been the one to greet her, and then them not opposing how the prince dealt with the situation, that would have been one thing, but she cursed ALL the servants and even the little kid that became a teacup, which makes the enchantress a totally evil person that deserved punishment, and its messed up that she got away with everything she did, even if you could say she was just trying to teach the prince a harsh lesson.

I actually disagree with this take. If we are saying that this story takes place in the distant past where the beast is a landowner with traditional responsibilities then it would actually be his duty to offer shelter for travelers. Hospitality is something a traveler had a kind of right to because the road would have been very dangerous. You see this reflected in old stories and myths too. Hospitality has a super important status, and people face some pretty dire consequences for not honoring it. Hell the old woman even offered to pay, which she was under no obligation to do. As for stranger danger. In this case the prince has a castle, and servants, and presumably soldiers. This would absolutely not be equivalent to some stranger asking to stay the night at our house today. It would be more like someone getting turned away from a public institution because they look ugly. It was callus, thoughtless, cruel, and against his sacred responsibilities. A lonely old woman with no place for shelter at night in the cold could after all die. As for cursing his servants, while I don’t nessecerily agree the implication it that as his household the servants are an extension of the prince and shares in some of the responsibilities. Perhaps you can think of them as enablers, who did nothing to prevent their lord from neglecting his duties. Of course Enchantresses are a bit extreme and she was just treated as subhuman and more or less left to die in the cold so that’s also an explanation as to why she was pissed off enough to curse the entire castle.

I found and watched a movie based more on the French novel. I didn't know it was a more accurate version to the original story. Very cool 😊 The Royal systems, most of, if not all of the time kept it in the family. Even the current day Brittain. Queen Elizabeth was cousins to her husband, George and Meghan is Harry's 16th cousin. I only know about those 2 pairs. But maybe we can Google the rest of them too.

Wow, I didn't know Beauty & The Beast had such an extensive backstory. I remember hearing that one of the animators/storyboarders for the 1991 Disney adaptation said something about making cuts to hit the deadline for the theatrical release. I'm guessing that the true "third act" you described here was one of the things that had to be cut.

The whole thing about beauty origins actually reminds me of the Twisted Tales book, As Old as Time, where Belles mother is actually the enchantress who curses the beast to begin with, and was kind of the leader in her magical community. She was even captured and kept in an insane asylum, and was only released when belle was also taken to the asylum and then subsequently broke out. Makes me wonder if the other read the original story, or if its just a coincidence.

I highly recommend FutureLearn's free online course called Fairy Tales: Meanings, Messages, and Morals. The moment I saw the title I immediately knew you were going to connect it to ancient Greek mythology; I had a feeling I'd read a similar story from that era. But funnily enough, i never would have thought that Psyche was the one you'd use- though it makes complete sense in retrospect.

I clocket it immediately. Mostly because that myth is so simmilar to « Kvitebjørn kong Valemon». A Norwegian fairytale collected by Asbjørnsen and Moe, and later painted by famous Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen. The story is the closest we have to Beauty and that Beast, so naturally Psyche and Eros is an easy leap.
