It's a new opera season in New York, and WQXR's Operavore welcomed the Metropolitan Opera to The Greene Space for an evening of favorites by Verdi, Rossini, Mozart and more, featuring Met Opera stars Guanqun Yu, Audrey Luna, Kathleen Kim, Isabel Leonard, Alek Shrader, and Ildar Abdrazakov. During the event there was a preview of two of the Met's new fall productions, Un Ballo in Maschera and The Tempest, with director David Alden and composer Thomas Adès. An audience joined us for intimate performance space -- The event was an example of the Met up close!

I assure you, she isn't harming her vocal chords. She is actually showing off her technique, and it's quite impressive. Also, it's all a matter of opinion, but the music isn't dead, it's writhing in pain, insanity, and wild euphoria. If that isn't art, I can't say what is.

Music is very much alive in the future. It takes some getting used to but this is actually really good music. The first time I heard it I was unsure, but now I can't stop listening to it!

This week's live from the Met was amazing to hear by this lover of classics AND modern masterpieces like Ades's "The Tempest." Audrey Luna was/is astounding.

Can someone explain to me why all classical contemporary music has to sound eerie and dark? Like is that just what's in right now? Is beautiful music just not a thing anymore? Are we in the emo phase of classical music?

She's not singing any higher than in the Queen of the Night aria... and in the context of the opera, it is a very beautiful and otherworldly piece... I think this particular performance could've been helped by slowing the tempo and not hitting into those F6s so hard. Teh notes are high, but they are meant to be attacked piano.

It's not a matter of some high notes here and there, it's the whole tessitura that's way more complicated to handle

Spectacular and unusual, but to what gain? There can be no words sung at this altitude- only sound. Makes me doubt the theatrical integrity of Mr. Ades, though he may be talented. Shock value, yes. But who wants to sit through a night of this? Definitely a few, yes? But how this will attract anyone to our art form beyond those who appreciate the esoteric?

Well the point is if you read the synopsis, Ariel is a spirit ..... and her words cannot be deciphered by mere mortal only that one character in the opera can hear and understand her. I think it's genius and NOBODY has explored that part of the voice and Ades did with clear intent... so i say leave him be...

Disagree, I like the ghostly quality of those high notes. It's like exploring an unknown planet, and meeting strange mutated people...

This voice successfully could be used as a crowd disperser. The ordinary police siren now out dated.

@@jamaicanpianistcomposer This. As a fellow stratosphere coloratura (Audrey Luna is really the only other person I can find with a voice that is similar)...there is purpose in this. The very fact that not many explore this part of the range is why I sing, as an example, almost only contemporary music because composers who know you will dare to write the extremes..and they want to:). There is beauty in all colors and characters. Thank you for what you wrote. It is appreciated.

I am sorry to say that after the initial shock I was hysterical for about a minute - just couldn't stop laughing. Still I won't judge the whole opera on this excerpt.

I saw it. It makes sense once on stage, pretty good actually. Its just something about the role, she like a crazy air spirit enslaved by a wizard wearing an outfit borrowed from lady gaga. This was on purpose, she has some more normal parts. But the idea behind the character is that she sings super high and its stupidly dificult, not only the singing, its also very demanding physically as well. I admire this woman for doing it and doing it so well. The opera is fantastic to be honest. You should see it and then you'll get this. It just looks odd without all the set up

So, music is dead in the future? I attended this concert. After the first few "chords" I started looking at the faces of those in the audience and, let me tell you, judging by people's facial expressions, nobody was enjoying this contemporary piece of "art." Audrey Luna is an outstanding vocalist and she should do everything she can to preserve the quality of her voice. This ridiculous scream-fest can only harm her vocal chords. I guess a check is a check at the end of the day.
