Vickers MG Collection & Research Association

2 жыл бұрын

To raise awareness of the commemoration of the centenary of the disbandment of the Machine Gun Corps 1922-2022, the Vickers MG Collection & Research Association organised a shoot of sixteen Vickers machine guns at the National Rifle Association, Bisley, Surrey. This had been the Machine Gun Training Centre for the Machine Gun Corps (Motors) so an apt location. Held on 3 July, around two weeks before the disbandment anniversary, it involved around 60 people, all who had been trained, and 16,000 rounds of .303-inch ammunition purchased especially for the event.
There is no intent whatsoever to glorify warfare or the destruction that machine guns cause. Machine guns caused death on a scale not previously seen and were the weapons of mass destruction during the Great War. This event hopefully draws attention to the men of the Machine Gun Corps and the men and women who had some links to the machine gun. When watching, consider this is just a small 'taste' of the battlefield and the impact machine guns had.

Truly remarkable! A fitting tribute to all of those involved in some way with the Vickers Machine Gun. My Grandfather was on the Vickers during the Great War, while serving with the Royal Marines, where he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He went on to serve with the Royal Marines throughout the Second World War, and retired the service with the rank of CSM. Excellent work gentlemen and ladies.👍🏻😁

"Fish and Chips"? No, "I'll get you before you get me." (For anybody who doesn't get that, well, never mind!) A magnificent demonstration, sadly I couldn't be there but at least I was instructing on a rifle range for the local club that day so am, maybe, slightly redeemed. Keep up the good work.

It's very interesting to hear the slightly different rates of fire of various MGs. I'm assuming there is some way to fine tune the weapon, such as a gas port, for reliable cycling which might give a faster rate of firefor some guns?
@vickersmg
@vickersmg Жыл бұрын
It’s the tension on the fusee springs that determines that rate of fire. Any weight between 7 and 9 lbs is acceptable.

Where did you get that much .303 from? I know its still commercially available from a few sources but bugger me that's a lot ball in one go.
@vickersmg
@vickersmg 2 жыл бұрын
It was new-made PPU ammunition. Bought direct from the U.K. Importer. It wasn’t an issue to get that much really. Other than an explosives licence being needed to keep it all in one place!

Ah. Serbia. If they can supply .303 by the crate does that mean someone out there is still using .303 Brens?
@vickersmg

Not that we’re aware of at all. The main outlet seems to be historic sport shooters. We understand we have been the biggest user of 303 ball ammunition this year. So far around 21,000 rounds fired.

We’re not sure of the point you’re trying to make here. The women were representing the factory workers that were an important part of the industry that supported these guns and the men in service. Those taking part on the day were all relieved and rightly satisfied that the training and planning effort that so many had put in paid off with the event running as smoothly as we had hoped.
