The Mighty 1941 Cat D2 5J Versus The Tree

Early spring finds the mighty little 1941 Cat D2 5j taking on a 14" diameter Jniperus Virginiana Cedar tree. Fortunatly larger cedar trees trunks do not break off at the root ball like smaller ones often do. They simply resist giving up the ground. This battle is a continuation of the land clearing and improvements project as part of the eventual escape from suburbia.
As of 2023 the 82 year old Caterpillar D2 tractor has paid for itself over and over with the some 200 hours put on it since its purchase in 2018. That use has been taking a toll. Most notable is the main clutch where indications of slipping are present. Though not 100% sure, there may be no more adjustment left in the clutch and is soon in need of rebuild.

👌👌👍👍 Most people call them "cedars", but as the species name juniperus virginiana suggests, they are a true juniper. Junipers have b-b sized bluish-grey berries, whereas cedars have marble-sized brownish berries. Thanks for the video.

They grow slowly and live a long time. Many old farm and Plantation lanes in my childhood home of Virginia are lined with them.

I spent many years working parts counters at John Deere Industrial Dealers; big and yellow, digs dirt. I always loved nothing better than when someone came in with a restoration project. It was usually Dad's or Grandpa's old machine they were rebuilding or they wanted a pulling tractor for competition. Some would come in monthly and spend $500-1000 and work on one section or mechanical group at a time. It was always very satisfying and you got to participate in their joy to a small degree. One fellow was so grateful for my expertise and help that he brought me a side of young Beef. That yearling was some of the best Veal I ever ate. I invited that man and his family to my church and we are still friends.

Jniperus Virginiana do not have a tap root. Still, with all of the shallow ones, they sometimes just do not want to give up the ground.

I got rid of the fire ants and now am shooting for some clover and rye. Bees like clover and rye will add some organic material to the thin soil when tilled in.
