This is absolutely true. Hard to understand today, but back in the late 70's and early 80's Van Halen was in a proverbial league of their own. Kind of similar to Prince in the 80's and 90's.

I've never seen anyone like them. I saw them in Houston in '82. Dave was talking his shit to some girls up front. Chick tried to give him $20 to see her later I guess. He said "You can't even look at it for that". Then from the middle of the floor somebody launches a black Allstar tennis shoe. Perfect arch seemed like it took forever as everyone kind hushed all at once. It hit's Dave right in the forehead. He never saw it coming with all the lights. He went down on one knee and got right back up. He said something like "That's ok I'm gonna fuck your girlfriend tonight. What a jerk to throw something when those guys are playing their hearts out. Probably the best show band with the most talented musicians ever. They had a charisma about them that was like no other. (Rusty)

Yep, saw every DLR era tour except the 1st, the VHI tour in 78. Charlotte NC General Admission! One year they played twice in 2 weeks, Feb 1st & 14th. Valerie was there on Valentines Day. Eddie gave her roses on stage. Saw them again in 2007, very 1st show with DLR back!

i think i read that at the oakland show they only filmed the 3 songs shown here. i think to save $ on film tape which was expensive. i believe they were filming these songs just to make a promo for the fair warning album (hence filming 3 FW songs). not to make a full concert movie. which obviously bites.

Exactly! Eddie and Michael were always on, but this shows Dave actually giving a great performance. He was dialed in. Dave could make or break a performance depending on how much improv he would do or if he actually remembered the lyrics and hitting the notes.

We are the same age. My first concert was 1981 Fair Warning tour. If you did not grow up with us (you and I ) you will never undestand the way we were then. We were an Army of long hair , denim and leather in muscle cars with hot chicks and tunes blasting out loud. If you tried to give us cell phones (of course impossible ) we would throw them in the bonfire. We did not want anyone to find us, track us nothing. We came out to play. And we played Hard!! You know the finger point Ed makes on the back cover of WACF? That was how I said hello!

As I understand, at the San Diego Sports arena show Jan Van Halen was there and That was the most amazing Guitar solo I believe he ever did, it was about 20+ minutes long and every second you were on the edge of your seat. I truly believe Eddie took it to the Next level with his father in the audience. The very beginning shows two brothers that grew up playing together. They are so tight. And it's been a little while since Eddie's passing and I understand that people feel so close to him without really knowing him. Eddie was our American guitar hero. Van Halen meant alot to us. Eddie's sonic boom and sending us to a different dimension thru a potal in time that's why people were so upset when the break-up happened with Dave. Thanks for Sammy picking up the torch and helping to carry the Van Halen legacy to it's end.

I just heard Eddie's first interview, and, it's unreal how good Eddie was. he played guitar for about 8 years when he recorded the debut album, which mostly was recorded live inside the studio. he used tube amps and pushed them to the edge, with modified input voltage. and after a maximum of 10 hrs, the amps gave up. the tubes had to be changed. but he kept on doing that because nothing sounded like it. one of the reasons for his unbelievable sound on the first album. the 2nd album it sounds a bit different but still out of this world. Eddie's impact on music history and rock guitar playing is unmatched. all of the other great guitar players who came after Eddie are there because Eddie started it. The God of the guitar. It's not about dumb speed anymore, it is about how you play your notes. and nobody plays as ass-kicking as Eddie did.

The haters don't have a problem with DLR in 1978-'84. But, I dropped an INSANE amount of money to see the "reunion" in L.A. when I still lived out there, and it was a giant pile of dog-sh!t. Between, DLR not singing a note (literally), and Eddie being so drunk, he didn't know what song he was playing, not to mention Wolfie on bass. I don't have a big problem with Wolfie, but he ain't Michael. It was no more of a reunion than it was a legitimate concert. So, the criticism the last 10yrs of the band was absolutely warranted. That said, no one...and I mean NO ONE could touch this band during these years. A lot of people don't realize that early KISS put on a show with this much drive and energy, as well. But, those days are all but forgotten because of the sh*t-show that band is today. But, I digress...
