In this latest episode #35 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac demonstrates how owning and managing a dairy cow for milk production on the small farm or homestead doesn't have to be as complicated as it is on a commercial dairy. The calf can be raised right alongside the lactating dairy cow, and actually makes the milking chore easier with flexibility.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books (like Pa Mac's "Building an Old-fashioned Pole Barn") or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandscompanion.com/gen...)

Such nostalgic memories. When I visited Granny and Papa I would get up early with Papa to watch him milk a cow and help him move the other dozen or so cattle around from pasture to pasture. They milked cows “commercially” until Hurricane Camille damaged their milking operation. That old barn survived Camille and provided me a love of the farm with precious time spent with Papa and his milk cow.

We've been doing exactly the same thing with our dairy cows over the years. I'm always sad when it's time to wean because as your shared we lose our flexibility. People always ask me if I like milking the cow and goats, my reply is something like this, " yes, because I'm guaranteed at least 35-45 minutes of sit-down time and time to plan out the next day or simply talk to the Lord. Love your vlogs and understand that you're busy. Take care and many blessings from MT.

Your comment about "time to plan out the next day or simply talk to the Lord" ... only somebody who's milked would know that. And I appreciate your pointin' it out.

I've been reading a great book that my sister bought me,if anyone is interested. Its called; The backyard homestead, from Storey publishing. I'm less than halfway through it,but it's very informational for those of us who are either just starting out or are maybe in the planning stage of of homesteading. Another one she bought me that I havent read yet but looks promising is; The forgotten skills of self sufficiency used by the mormon pioneers. I'm not mormon, but all for learning new old skills. That's a beautiful calf you have there, thanks for all you do and share.👍

I LOVE your videos! I’m a homeschool mom of 3. My husband and I bought a small farm in southern Missouri and are learning the ways of old. The Lord had put on our hearts to get out of the city and learn a more peaceful and traditional way of life (quiet and working with our hands as scripture says). It’s been kind of rough at times since we’ve always been city slickers but almost a year in and I’m learning to love it more. We are preparing for our 1st milk cow!!! We have lots of poultry, rabbits, and goats- but now it’s time for the cow and I am SO excited!!!

I enjoyed watching this very much! I milk my goats the very same way and it is a joy for me to milk for many reasons. As one commented earlier, it's time to sit down and plan the day and/or pray, but in addition to that, I get to enjoy the morning sun coming over the mountains and bringing it's light right into my lap. It's a beautiful time for me. Thank you for posting!

I agree with everyone, I thoroughly enjoy your videos Pa Mac. I have a small farm myself in Garfield and we even have a Jersey Milk cow. Your fridge full of milk is just like mine. 2 milks a day, and a constant 10+ gallons of milk in the fridge. Homemade butter, buttermilk, sour cream and on and on; so good. How we turned from this way of life is beyond me. (I know why but that subject can be left alone). You have never tasted buttermilk biscuits until you made them with fresh cultured buttermilk from your milk the day before...absolutely heavenly! Thank you and I look forward to watching more....Oh, thanks for the Milk Barn video, i needed inspiration to build mine now. Blessings!

People today have lost essential skills and knowledge. Being dependent on a system of convenience is not really a good thing. Even if folks only have the information taught to them to create a respect for where our food comes from, it's worth including it in school curriculum. Maybe it would help curtail the flagrant unconcern/uncaring that is so prevalent now. Thank you for bringing to life knowledge of a compassionate existence.

Book learnin' is always good, and my library is sure a full one (includin' the book you mentioned), but sometimes they overwhelm me with numbers and proteins and ailments and all kinds of things that can go wrong. Your videos are some of my favorites. Im always ready for a new FHC. Ive had alot of milk like that. Until recently we had a dairy that l could get milk butter milk an icecream from. Useing un pasteurize milk. That buttermilk an grape icecream was best l ever l ever tasted. But l did some things about a cow which never hurts.
