you must have heard that story before. Even if not, you will surely hear it somewhere one day. During the cold space war in the 60s, NASA engineers realized that pens wouldn't work properly in space. They struggled for years, worked, toiled and spent millions of dollars so that astronauts could write in space, and they finally developed a very special pen that could transfer ink onto paper in a gravity-free environment. But their rivals on the other side of the ocean, the Soviet Union, instead of spending so much effort and money, came up with a much simpler solution. They gave pencils to their cosmonauts. When you come across these stories, the speaker will usually go on with the lessons to be learned from the story. Well, instead of showing your ear like this, you can show it like this. It is not necessary to solve complex problems in such complex ways. And simplicity always win. These lessons may be true, but this story is just a story. Not real. The fact is both more interesting, and it teaches us a lesson that much more valuable. First of all, such a pen does really exists. That's it. And this pen was indeed developed in the 60s at a cost of $1,000,000, or almost $8,600,000 in today's money. It is written AG7 on the pen as the model number. This AG stands for "Anti Gravity". Or "non-gravity".
The number 7 comes from Apollo 7, the first mission this pen was used in space. You can see astronaut Walter Cunningham using it for the first time in space in this photo taken inside the Lunar module on day 9 of the mission. This pen, which even appeared in one of the first television broadcasts from space, later appeared in many television series and became a part of popular culture. There's even an entire episode of Seinfeld called "The Pen" dedicated to this pen.
