He sold insurance, was a bellboy, cowboy, sailor, dentist, business tycoon, dancer, actor, producer, doctor, major, truck driver, hoodlum, no part he couldn’t play!

At 3:02 the other actor is looking at Cagney the way the rest of us have for the last 80 years. With love, affection, admiration. 80 years later & Cagney's performances still leap off the screen.

His energy and the way he moved his hands was amazing. And he didn't need that method acting bullshit.

George Arliss liked to develop young talent. He gave James Cagney this bit part because he thought he had potential. He also gave parts to Bette Davis to build her up.

Mr. Cagney did not steal this scene: the great George Arliss gave it to him, with a smile.

Hear, hear ! Much as I have adored, admired, almost obsessed about - lol - the great James Cagney now for 46 years, at least. BRAVI, James & George! ☘️♥️

I've seen this movie. This is Cagney's only appearance, and it comes at the beginning. The old guy takes Cagney's advice and buys an automotive garage. It would've been a better movie if Cagney's character had made a return appearance later in the movie to comment about how well the old guy did with his advice. Cagney's character could have stopped in the garage for some gas or an oil change.

Biographer Richard Schickel once opined that the grapefruit scene in Public Enemy made Cagney a star...not so...Cagney's wit, humour, grace & lethal charm were manifestly obvious from the get-go. This scene is one example...

if i were watching this movie back then, i'd seriously want that character to return. a lot of times, small roles like this have actors that the audience doesn't care to see again so there's no frustration. thankfully they put that aside. supposedly this small role got him the lead in public enemy.

George Arliss slow paced acting, against the dynamic, energetic, fast paced talking Jimmy Cagney. Thats why Cagney was ahead of his time

Ridiculous, it is in the contrast that the scene works in the first place. George Arliss was as big a star in his heyday as Cagney in his.

I love scene-stealing. The best one that comes to mind at the moment is Mercedes Ruehl in "Married to the Mob". She just flat chews the carpet in that movie. The lovely Michelle Pfeiffer never had a chance.

+Fra Diablo Well, for one thing it's often illegal to post them, and for another this is the only scene James Cagney was in, so they posted it for people like me, who don't care to see the whole movie but only the scene with my favorite actor in it.

If I may say so, it is still a good movie and worth watching if you like 1930s comedy. It was on TCM recently and George Arliss gave a great performance.
