In this video I show you how the amazing self-siphoning chain fountain actually works. Then I show you a chain that can actually get sucked down when you drop it on a table! This is an amazing physics demonstration that was only recently discovered and finally modeled. This is similar to the molecular version of this event with the self pouring self siphoning fluid polyethylene glycol. Here is a link to the published papers on this phenomenon. rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/470/2163/20130689

I think that the action lab is right, and both of them are wrong. From the fact that falls to the ground faster as explained at the end of this video. According the ElectroBoom and Steve Mould, this shouldn’t happen
@nokzendi3377
@nokzendi3377 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert, but I was wondering if the initial yank they give to the end of the string affect/provides the momentum required for the chain to rise up. As he mentioned that there was an extra momentum required in the initial climbing period and electroboom's explanation mentioned that the strings don't have to be rods per se, so even flexible non-lever-like strings also showed a similar effect.
@MartinMaat
@MartinMaat 3 жыл бұрын
@@donglebookpromax6405 The ground effect demonstrated may be a thing when using a ladder type string but it is utterly irrelevant to the string raising above the edge. That happens long before the string hits the ground.
@codylove3212
@codylove3212 3 жыл бұрын
@@donglebookpromax6405 He is the closest but its not entirely correct, when he talks about the rods being pushed against the table that force it self is what is actively happening but at the wrong location. Each link between the beads is the rod and the inside walls of the beads are the table. The force that is causing this to happen is at the top of the chain, where the direction of the chain is changing. The rod is being pulled down on one side causing the other side of the rod to lift. This in turn causes the next ball in the line to be lifted. This continues and the chain continues to come out of rest on the "jar" side and the force pulling the chain down increases on the "falling" side. The increased force on the falling side causes more force on the rod and increases the velocity of the reaction causing the next ball to be lifted higher. It keeps increasing as the chain falls further tell it hits the ground at which point the force of the rod being pulled down is now relatively a constant tell the reaction is finished. Which is what dictates how high of an arch the "chain" makes as its being pulled down.

The two scientists are wrong. ElectroBOOM showed that by placing them in a way that made it seem like the chain was in a bottomless jar, and it still had the same effect meaning it was nothing to do with the chain bouncing off the surface it's sitting on as it wasn't on a surface.

Yes, and it looked like the chain was trying to twist. I think the change in direction at the top of the arc imparts angular momentum on the chain, that's why it works better with beads that spin, and that's why it spirals on its way up out of the jar. They need a high speed camera and striped beads to see if they are spinning. or even a good slow-mo of ElectroBOOM's chain

@@kennymartin5976 Rods being too heavy is not what limits it, there is no limit but there is a limit for us. For us we are limited to how heavy a chain we can pick up and throw over the edge. See because he mentioned in the video the energy from the entire process comes from the falling chain. Without that energy exerting force on the chain on the table, then there would be no fountain, and no chain falling. So it means the chain can be as heavy as humanly possible to move with heavy cranes, because that means the weight of the chain falling over the edge is far heavy enough to do the same exact thing as a small chain, but with way more energy involved. But i don't see the point myself, you can't extract any energy from it or anything, it is just a bigger version of the small chain but now it is deadly if it hit you. You could have it land on a huge bladder with water in it and cause huge water pressure, but once that runs out you have to pick it up and do it again and that takes energy, there is no free energy. But there IS energy, and you can get and use it easily, or the hard way. lol

Excellent explanation! I wonder if a large reel of tape (audio tape or movie tape) would exhibit the same effect.. I bet it would. I have seen a similar effect when casting a fishing line from an open face reel, which I believe contributes to backlash tangles. We would love to tackle these two tests in future videos. Keep up the great work! Joe

2:45 Inertia. As the chain is pulled out of the jar, it is accelerated upwards. The chain arches because the mass of the chain is pulling the leading end down, but the trailing end still has most of its upward vertical Inertia, so it forms an arch.
@philsburydoboy
@philsburydoboy 6 жыл бұрын
David Blalock - Livin' Life You're right about inertia causing the arch but the force created by pulling the chain down is far too great to allow it to come off the lip of the beaker. It needs additional forces to have enough intertia to go above the lip
@davidblalock9945
@davidblalock9945 6 жыл бұрын
philip martin its 100% inertia, the arch is part of centrifugal force, which is part of the law of inertia. The added force comes from gravity pulling the chain down.
@davidblalock9945
@davidblalock9945 6 жыл бұрын
philip martin that theory he describes was disproven by a similar experiment being performed using a bag (a non rigid container) and getting the exact same result. The chain builds up inertia as it rises to leave the bag, and still forms an arch as it exits the top.

The overal force of grafity is to big to do only cause it from inertia. There are some other forces that use the energy provided to get the chain in the air from the lip. Also you can see that the loop is getting bigger, thats never the case of inertia. You watch to much spongebob i think

Well, from what I'm taking from this, it seems that systems that involve conservation of energy through conversion from angular momentum to linear momentum seem to be non-intuitive and "mind blowy" to the average observer. I saw a similar video that physics girl put up about dropping tic-tacs that's also worth watching if you found this interesting. As far as useful applications go.. I'll get back to you on that. It's fun to think about though.

Charles Deens High energy UV light kill live forms by ionizing the atoms which then breaks the chemical bonds resulting in destruction of the molecules. It will either kill the cell or make it un-functional (cancer)
@Tact012

UV light can cause excitation of thymine rings in DNA which can cause 2 adjacent thymine bases to bond together and separates them from their normal base pair. It also causes a "kink" to form in the sugar-phosphate backbone of the antiparallel DNA strands resulting in those sections of DNA being cut off from transcription or replication until the thymine dimer is fixed.

Originally I didn’t agree with action nabs explanation where the sticks hit the floor but then I didn’t account for the fact that the center axis of the sticks was also heading down! Ie COMBINED seesaw action AND seesaws pivot heading down. Nice work ! In all of this the chain link influence is largely a red herring. Coiled Cotten rope from a can also fountains upward !
