Yes, the story comes across as slightly patronising. Like yourself, have read books like Zen Flesh, Zen Bones but find the most lucid comments are in a book entitled Zen Essence by Thomas Cleary, published by Shambhala books, Colorado, USA.

For most of my life I have felt like I am mired in the debris of creative ideas that I started with enthusiasm, but lost momentum and moved onto something else. It’s to not define laziness by what others do.

Have lived a sedentary life for decades. Will be 63 in a few weeks but feel as young as a teenager. One of the core messages of Zen Buddhism is that we must save energy in order to achieve full enlightenment. Can confirm that this is exactly right, wasting energy to appear busy and active compared with lazy is pointless.

Same here, from 15 til age 55 I played and worked extremely hard, and now after covid, broken relationships and the passing of several dear people, I feel drained physically and mentally. And is a struggle just to get out of bed and eat......
