Life is full of things that we have to do, mundane chores eating up our time. But could these things actually be some of the most valuable moments… if we think so?
Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop) is a 2011 anime (manga adaptation) following a 30 year old bachelor, Daichiki, who adopts the illegitimate daughter of his grandfather upon his passing. The family, seeing her as a burden of responsibility, worries about his decision, however he takes on the cost of parenthood in stride. Where they all made excuses due to life’s “have to”s, he embraces that not every cost is without benefit; sometimes what we have to do can be positive for us. With this hidden life philosophy, Daikichi begins to raise Rin, as the anime makes meaningful points from mundane moments, like chores. In daily tasks we often ignore, the real themes and the story are explained, with this warm slice of life discussing a great idea; our expectations can shape reality. If we set our mind to it, can we make the best of what we have to do?
A video essay discussing the themes of Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop), like responsibility, the cost of parenthood, and expectations shaping reality, through Daikichi and Rin’s connection.

In place of the regular links for this episode, I wanted to instead mention that I wasn't aware of the manga ending for this series at all during the production of this video. Everything I say is based only on the anime, and I find what I've been told about the manga ending truly distasteful. I apologize for not being aware of that, if I had been, this video certainly never would have been produced

I don't think you have anything to apologize for. You gave your take on the anime, not the manga. The two can be viewed separately. The existence of the manga, or the bizarre direction that it takes, doesn't make this video any less impactful. You've given me, and surely many others a different perspective on life, and I for one, am grateful for that. Thank you.

No worries honestly. So many anime adaptions are distinct from the source material anyway. In this case most people who watched the anime had zero idea about what the manga turned into.

Don’t worry. Sadly anime/manga all of it is a series of trials and tribulations to find the good shit. Thankfully you don’t have to ruin your experience with the manga blindsiding you. I loved the anime, still do to an extent, but yeah…. Anything further than that I run far far away

I made the extremely poor decision to stop watching this video midway through because "I didn't want to be spoiled anymore on this fantastic story", and thought the best method would be to read the manga... I've finished the manga now. I'm traumatised. For what it's worth, the anime/first part of the manga is phenomenal. It is a fantastic exploration of parenthood, and I'm glad I read it. The second part has made me sad that someone, responsible for the first part, could think anything like the second part is ok. The greatest anime ever that I'm so glad didn't get a second season!

@@TapaniLastellar The anime only covers the first half of the manga. The second half has the girl fall in love with her adopted dad, who is initially horrified, but is eventually convinced to marry her and have kids with her by every other character in the manga. Yes, even the single mother that it looked like he might become a couple with. i know its a long shot, but I would really love if you would watch jojo part 5, it has some interesting concepts relating to fate, and how even if your life is fated to happen in a certain manner, how you deal with the circumstances is different. As seen in the main cast overcoming their trouble some pasts, while the antagonist choosing the evil path instead. also the series overall is responsible for creating a lot of classic tropes as seen in animes, along with some flamboyant artsytle breaking the generic anime character boundaries. so if you have the time give it a go.

I understand your point of hating sociaty, feeling bad for existing and why you think that sociaty only wants children to keep it self running. But i disagree with you in every point, we created sociaty so that we don´t need to watch how our loved ones get kill by pretaders when they are hungry, don´t need to watch people starve because we had bad weather or didn´t get to catch prey and don´t need to watch on as our family gets red dots on there body and slowly die to somthing that we can´t see or even hope to fight. We created sociaty to stop that, to be able to watch as our loved ones find happiness. The reason why we make more humans is in my opinion, to watch them find there happiness, not to give us purpose or to show us the importens of mundane thing, or to keep sociaty running, it´s just for us, you and me and everybody else, that we can be happy and enjoy our lives, thats our purpose, so there is not reason in my opinion for feeling bad for existing. That sociaty wants us to destroy our selfs, so that we bring more out put and can support more people on this planet then there mabye should be is anothere disccusion.

I have a horrible habit of not testing how well a title will do, and just going with what sounds good, only to see the video start horribly and have to change it to fix that. I actually truly hate doing it, because it's the "youtube meta" now or something like that, but it can save a video from bombing if you see the title and thumbnail not doing well. But, I think its very fair to watch for the analysis and not the series themselves, and I'm glad to see it even. It's good to know that my thoughts can extend beyond just anime, and be beneficial for others outside of that scope. I do hope to one day simply write on my own, so its encouraging
