The Minimalist Home: Interview with Joshua Becker
For today's video, I am so thrilled to be joined by Joshua Becker, the author of The Minimalist Home, founder of Becoming Minimalist, and one of the leaders within the minimalism movement! In this video, we discuss what it means to live a minimal life and how to create a minimalist home that is aligned to your lifestyle, values, and your purpose! If you want to learn more about how to declutter your home, I highly recommend this book! I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and I hope you will too!

For me it comes down to energy. When I own less I have more energy. It takes a lot of energy to clean, dust, move items, declutter organize etc. I also didn’t need as many duplicates as I owned. I don’t need 3 punch bowls and 20 serving dishes. My minimal journey lead to less stress.

Omg... Had to stop the video. Decluttering my bedroom was THE thing that made me, not only create a night routine, but start my "Miracle Mornings". I love winding with a book (or Kindle) in my cozy bedroom. I'm at work at least an hour early (I prefer to read there) and have started planning morning workouts inside for the colder months. Doing my bedroom first also excited me to do the rest of the house.

What a wonderful interview! Not only was it informative and pleasant to see Joshua Becker in a relaxed conversation, but your interviewing skills were excellent! You gave him lots of room and respect to talk without interruption (done more often than you might imagine!) and you responded in a manner to reinforce what he just said, adding your own personality and experience without overtaking the guest. You were organized, kept the conversation moving smoothly, and responded with small nods and smiles, respecting your guest without stealing the spotlight. Really excellent job; thank you! The famous Australian cartoonist..Leunig wrote this poem some time ago and I love it .The last sentence is mine though : We simplify our lives, We live gladly with less. We let go the illusion that we can possess.... We create instead . We let go the illusion of mobility, We travel in stillness...we travel at home By candlelight and in stillness In the presence of flowers we make our pilgrimage . We simplify our lives to more become His image... I hope you love this poem as much as I do.

Is it necessary to have a goal to achieve in order to want to have less? I realized that I don't need so much stuff and want to give those things a new purpose to other people. I have things that were part of my life in a certain point and I don't need them anymore. I really want less unnecessary junk in my life.

Bonjour Célia, it seems to me that you have already 2 clear goals: 1) Your want to remove all unnecessary possessions from your life and 2) You want others to benefit from what no longer serves you. I did this myself after a divorce and it was very cathartic and just what I needed to do ✨

The trouble with minimilism, it makes me think all the time about the past, why did i ever accumilate? so why did i ever do it? When i see the benefits now and reaping the rewards since i became a die hard minimilist, i wished i had listened to joshua years ago, , it did takes me years to minimilize ,it was a gradual process, but finally compleated it in 2015 and money saved now is great, thanks to all i have now listened too, yes like joshua i had to many duplicates of various items, and ask myseld what for and why?

People have passions and sometimes minimalism also represents lack of passion for things though too. One should surround themselves with stuff that brings them joy and having no personality in a room often reflect people who lack creativity. I love putting my stuff on display. I am a crafter and also know when it's too much at the same time but all white wall with nothing on them make me what to leave so I can bring warmth to my surroundings.

This is a great question, Nakisha! I think it is a very common struggle that everyone has to figure out what makes the most sense to them. I do personally agree with Herbivores Rule's comment about keeping what you love and passing the others on to those who might enjoy them more!
@mariemilycraig
@mariemilycraig 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nakisha! I really love books and I feel best in a room where I can look at shelves of books, so I really empathise with your struggle! The way I managed to reduce the number of books I own is this: I took them down from the shelves and put them all in stacks on the floor, KonMari style (only a few shelves at a time though, there wasn't room on the floor for ALL the books). I then looked at all of them in turn and asked myself: is there anything here that I would be ok to part with? (Or you can ask the 'Does it spark joy' question if that works for you! For me, the first question worked better.) I then took out the books that I felt ok about giving away - and I was really surprised, because there were lots more than I would have thought!! Make sure you get those books out of the house as quickly as possible: donating is best. Since then, I have done this a few more times, and every time I surprise myself by being able to give away more books than I thought. Most recently, I decluttered some of my craft books - again, extremely surprising, as usually I BUY craft books, not declutter them! 😅 What I did was to take out a stack, go through each one by one (actually looking at each page) and writing down in a notebook the projects I wanted to make from each book. With some books I discovered that, even though I loved looking at the pictures, I would actually never want to make any of the projects. With others, I realized the same kind of project was shown in some other book I had. I don't need three books telling me how to make napkins and table runners! 😆 So it was a lot easier to let go of them than I would have imagined. Tl;dr - Make a start. You'll be able to let go of more than you thought!! 💕

What I do is create a list of books i want to read and add them to my amazon cart. I don't actually buy them immediately. Usually the list gets way too big way too fast and I can easily delete a couple of these books on my list after a while. I also like to have a look in other people's book shelves when I'm visiting friends and if they own a couple books that are on my list I will borrow them. I will also check if they have some in the libraries online catalogue. While traveling it's pretty common to exchange books so I always read some like that as well. If a book is on my list for too long (like at least 1 year+) I will buy some of these in bulk on amazon like once a year or something. I read up to 40-50 books a year but lately I've managed to read the same amount while only buying around 10-15 books a year on amazon. This is one of the few things I actually buy so I don't worry about it too much as a minimalist because it is an important part of my life and I find it a nice way of decorating a room as well. I do make sure to keep them somewhat organized and give some away from time to time. I think it all depends how important something is in your life.

I have an ereader, but I will keep a lot of my favorite books because my favorite Dutch and Czeck books aren't available for the ereader. I do re-read books. I recently made one bookcase look nicer by removing the clutter in front of the books and replacing bookmarks that were poking out. My spouse puts whole letters as a bookmark. For my dvds (also not on Netflix or anywhere) i put a kids empty shoebox behind them so they arr flush with the bookcase and no one can put something in front. It looks so much nicer.

It's not a movement it's a trend especially you Americans look to follow Trends very few Americans are real people you'll cowards and you follow and sheeps that's what you people minimalism is a trend so lots of people on KZfaq are jumping on the bandwagon to be cool with it but ain't got a clue what it's about is what you wanted to be you don't have to have an empty house you have a lot of stuff actually but have a small house will have a big house and a blessed stuff you make it up your way don't follow the trend be a leader not a follower or sheep I live at my van part-time and have a small room so you guess you can call me a minimalist which I'm not I don't put labels on myself...

Josh Becker is a for profit minimalist. Which is fine, he shouldn't be classified as minimalist, but more of an entrepreneur.

I think that technically most of us are "for profit" in the sense that we have jobs and try to make money. Just because someone is an entrepreneur doesn't mean that they can't be a minimalist.

@@AbundantlyMinimal he is a minimalist sure, he is entrepreneur based on using minimalism to sell to others. Most of us just use it as a lifestyle. But we all gotta make a living somehow.
